Once the season ends, a lot of focus will be on Pete Alonso. Will he be traded? Will he be extended? Will he become a free agent?

What's gonna happen????

anything other than option 1 should lead to a fan revolt. unless maybe we could trade him for miguel cabrera, dontrelle willis, and a time machine.

I voted option 1

Me too. Youse could thank that scumbag eff Wilpon for the fact that the Mets are even dealing with this situation right now. Under normal circumstances, you could play that 2019 season a million times over and every time, Alonso's debut would've been held back the requisite number of days to delay his free agency by a whole season. But the team was in dire financial circumstances and run by an owner who absolutely knew that he wouldn't be owning the team for much longer and so couldn't give a shit about anything other than the team's immediate near-term outlook.

I know how I feel and I know what the Mets said after the deadline, but I wasn't sure about Stoins.

I'd guess it's 70/30 Pete is here past '24. But I damn sure hope he is.

The thing is ... you'd be a fool to make promises about an unsigned player, as it puts you in an awful bargaining position.

Re: Polar Peter Poll

Apparently there was some flirtation with the Brewers about Pete at the deadline

I would be comfortable to suggest the Mets asked about minor leaguer Jackson Chourio. Chourio is thought to be a generational talent by many in mlb

Brewers said no and life goes on

I can't think of anyone who is happier to be a Met than Pete Alonso

Re: Polar Peter Poll

It seems clear that the Brewers and Mets talked about Alonso. But it's not at all clear how significant that is.

It may just be that the Brewers approached the Mets, and the Mets listened and rejected a deal. It doesn't mean that the Mets were "shopping" Alonso, although many seem to have drawn that conclusion.

Brandon Nimmo did the exact same thing: sign with Boras in the off-season just before his option or walk year.

Anyway, good for Pete.

Re: Polar Peter Poll

I would more strongly consider a trade today than I would have yesterday. Boras brings the vast majority of his big names to free agency. If the right offer came along, I would tell Pete we love you and we will be in on the bidding in a year, but given Boras' track record we need to take a goo deal if it raises.

Of course it is. Especially here. If the Mets wanna trade Alonso because they think the team will be competitively better off making the trade rather than keeping Alonso, well that's understandable. But trading Alonso because Bora's his agent? Why? Because the Mets might have to pay Alonso $10M or $15M more than the closest other bidder? They're gonna have to do that no matter who Alonso's agent is. I mean $10M or $15M to Cohen, who's worth 15 billion dollars and doesn't even need most of his money? Because how many cars can a person own? He can only drive one of them at a time. Assuming Cohen even drives himself around these days. What's he gonna do with all that extra money? Have three lunches a day and then four dinners at four different four-star restaurants every single evening? Ten or fifteen million dollars to a guy who's a billionaire 15 times over? And who probably has a better chance of doubling his net worth than some regular guy who's worth $75K, given how capitalism works? If Boras can elicit higher offers for the same free agent compared to other player agents, then he's doing a terrific job and every free agent should sign with Boras.

Did that get him a significantly higher contract than he would have received with any other agent? He received more than I would have thought he was worth, and or a longer term. But that's just me. We really can't know what any other agent would have done for him.

If that's true, then what's the problem with Alonso signing with Boras?

Also, during the Cohen era, Max Scherzer was also a Boras client and Scherzer did pretty good, contract wise. Me, I don't think any of this is problematic and shouldn't push the Mets to trade Alonso even more than they might be willing to do so in the first place.
