Eppler and the IL

What do you suppose is being investigated specifically? Which stays on the IL stand out to you as fake, illegitimate, or otherwise suspicious?

Gwreck raised Tommy Hunter's back spasms. I forget the actual circumstance but I recall it was a "convenient" injury to get at the time

I would imagine that whatever player (or players) were affected, they would have had to have been the source of this, right? Maybe after the Mets released him, Hunter snitched about being put on the list for fake back spasms?

I dunno, it seems tough to make this sort of charge or complaint stick. Everyone on the roster is always hurting to a greater or lesser degree, and most times they just play through (or get ongoing treatment for) whatever's bothering them. Is it really a violation to ask a player "Hey, couldn't you use a few days of rest? It would really help the club get through a roster crunch we're going through right now, and I know you're less than 100%, right?" Did Eppler do much more than that, do you suppose?

I think a player doing that would soon be blacklisted? This would seem a "normal " part of the game .

I can't point to a particular suspicious move but there seemed to be a lot of roster moves (IL and other). I defer to Edgy, who dutifully maintains the roster, to tell us if this happened more or less than in prior years. Later

Mets were nothing more than most , some teams had a whole lot more Jeff Passan The Mets this season placed 25 players on the IL a total of 28 times, according to ESPN Stats & Information. That ranked 16th among MLB teams. San Francisco, with 46 IL placements, was first, just ahead of Cincinnati (45) and the Los Angeles Angels (42). If this was a strategy, he should have put Carrasco on the IL a heck of a lot sooner! Carrasco's salary was fully guaranteed and he probably would have been a lot better off at home anyway - these "phantom DL" moves generally involve pre free agency players with options remaining who are incentived to agree as the alternative is to be sent down and not make the MLB minimum

Elieser Hernandez was about to be activated in August, but he quickly and mysteriously disappeared. Maybe he was out of rehab time, and out of options, but it was clear he wasn't back enough yet to contribute at the big league level and they didn't want to freeze a roster spot for him, but they didn't want to lose him. So a new injury appeared. All speculation, though.
