I still hold a grudge from 1969, sorry.

Also Cubs, Yankees, Cards. A lot of baggage.

What's the grudge with the '69 Orioles, you bet on them and it didn't pay?

Maybe because before the series they put the Mets down. Remember Frank Robinson saying "Who's Ron (SIC) Gaspar?"

But unless he lost a bet like you said, I can't think of anything else.

Re: Let's Go O's

Obnoxiousness, is my problem with the 1969 O's. The Robinson crack about Ron Gaspar, the Earl Weaver bullshit carrying on during the series, the "you ain't seen nothing yet" from Buford to Harrelson while rounding the bases on his leadoff homer in Game One against Seaver, the snottiness in general.

I think a lot of the people from that team are playing with the Angels now. The new guys seem decent enough.

And they responded to the insults in the most satisfying way more than 50 years ago.

Anyway go Os. They haven't done much yet but here comes Aroldis Chapman, speaking of guys who are easy to hate

Re: Let's Go O's

Yeah, sure. Whatever. That makes sense. Hating the Orioles because of Don Buford and Frank Robinson.

And Davey Johnson, too, I suppose.

Whatever. Ostrosser.

Re: Let's Go O's

Of the teams in the postseason, the Orioles are among the best options. The Twins are probably inoffensive, and the Diamondbacks are at least something different…but Baltimore's probably it.

Obviously Atlanta, Philadelphia, and the Dodgers are complete unacceptable in all forms. And the Texas teams probably are too.

Whatever. Ostrosser.

Thanks for the reminder. I owe my friend Brian Ostrosser a letter--I plan to visit Hamilton, Ontario, soon, and I need to give him plenty of time if he wants to talk about the 1973 squad with me. I'll keep you all posted.

I'll go

Arizona least offensive

Baltimore next

Twins then

But I'll root for any team left that is playing the Astros , if that was Philly or Atlanta I would be very indifferent to that WS

All in all I don't mind the Dodgers at all , so if they are the last NL standing in rotting hard for them

*rooting, although rotting works

Re: Let's Go O's

The bad news is the Os lost.

Astros were up big on Twins.

Philadelphia leading Atlanta 1-0 in the 4th.

Now Mr G with the 5 day forecast

Just tuning in for my first MLB playoff action of 2023 (been outta town and mostly outta touch) and am being treated to the O's doing an implosion act.

9-2 Texas, 1 out top 3

I've seen four ABs: BB, BB, BB, GS !!!

14 of the first 21 Rangers reached base: 7 Hits, 7 BBs

off of four Baltimore pitchers

Re: Let's Go O's

O's managed to close to 11-8 but were never really in the game. It was close only after a 3R 9th inning HR

Sometimes homers can throw cold water on a rally.

Re: Let's Go O's

I never bought into that logic.

But my point was that there are games hwere you lose by three while having the tying run to the plate at on several occasions.

The O's though were always multiple batters away from that after getting ambushed for nine runs in the 2nd & 3rd innings.

runner on third. there's a wild pitch. gets so far away from the catcher that your guy could walk home.

do you hold the runner for the sake of the rally?

Edgy MD
Oct 10 2023 08:17 PM
Re: Let's Go O's

Probably not. The runner is probably making that call on his own anyhow. But in the ninth, the only runs that matter are the tying and the go-ahead runs.

Re: Let's Go O's

your team is in the middle of a rally. looking to pile on the runs. last guy ended up on third somehow. there's a wild pitch. this run won't necessarily be the one to win the game, because there's more game to be played. heck, there's more rally to run in this inning.

does he have the green light to score here, or do you hold him so as not to kill the rally with empty bases.

Re: Let's Go O's

If it's the ninth, and I'm the third-base coach, I let him decide for himself.

He's probably best off going. Any edge him being a distraction on the basepaths is offset by him pissing off the other team by not taking what's there.

But there is an edge in traffic on the basepaths. Big-leaguers reached at a .311 rate in 2023 with the bases empty, and .332 with men on.

With a lone runner on third, players reached at .356 rate.

Scherzer is three-quarters dead and deGrom has no 2023 pulse.

What's the point?
