The weird thing about that moment is how a lifetime of watching games at Shea and the enormity of the moment put me as in the zone as a fan as Endy was as a defender. As soon as the ball left the bat, an intuitive grasp of Shea's dimensions and the prevailing weather patterns and time of year consumed me, and I knew in an instant that (a) that ball was going over the wall, (b) it was nonetheless within reach of a pullback, (c) it would take a superlative pullback from a player capable of making an NBA leap and pulling it back from two to two and a half feet beyond the fence because that's where it was it was going, and (d) Chavez may well be that guy, and maybe the only guy, for the moment. It's like I knew instantly, within inches, exactly where that ball was coming down, and that I could well be about to see something historically remarkable.
