Happy Mickey Mantle Day!

The Mick would be 91 today!

Just kidding.

It pains me that Keith Hernandez's birthday would fall on Mantle's birthday. Keith is 70 today.

And actually I don't know how old Mantle would have been today--that's just a guess.

But Keith is definitely 70.

Which makes me feel old, very old.

Today would have been Mantle's 92nd birthday.

I hadn't been aware that Keith and Mantle shared a birthday.

My girlfriend's son is 16 today. He has such a complete contempt and loathing for sports that he would not care at all that he shares a birthday with Keith Hernandez and Mickey Mantle.

So I don't think I'll mention it.

Kind of young for that sort of vitriolic hatred for sports. I can see “eh, not stuff I'm interested in now, or ever.”. In a way I can see it more from someone that “learns” and “reads” more and decides there is more socio-economic sort of stuff going on with organized sports as a concept to feel that passionately against their very existence.

Had he been the target of extreme harassment and bullying from jocks in school?

Association with a piece of shit father or other family figure?

Bela Lugosi and Margaret Dumont, too. Possibly together.

It doesn't pain Keith as he, like a lot of sobs of mid-20th century America, grew up a Mantle fan despite being an entire coast removed. It's why his uni number always had to have a 7 in it.

It's also my parents anniversary today, their 67th, which they would be celebrating if they were, y'know, not hanging out with Bela Lugosi and Margaret Dumont.

When is Martha Stewart's birthday? They could have a party for three!

As was probably the case for lots of kids growing up in NYC in the 1950's, Mickey Mantle was my dad's favorite player.

Nothing so dramatic. He's autistic and opinionated. He feels the same way about soup.

I have had soup like every weekday for the last thirty years.

Let's keep this between us!

I'm kind of with him on the soup, unless it's Manhattan style clam chowder or butternut squash bisque.

Is 'butternut squash bisque' some kind of MAGA code phrase? lol...

Rookies don't usually get a say in such things, particularly back then.

He'll, I was a Mickey Mantle fan even though really only being aware of him towards the tail end of his career. But everyone in those days, particularly New Yorkers, KNEW the Mick was the best player in baseball, even if it was no longer true and only sometimes true before that.

You think Jeter had an Amen chorus in the press?

And that feeling long outlived Mick himself for some. Jason Giambi took #25 as a Yanqui because those digits added up to 7 and he knew that would be a big deal to his father who was a Mantle fan.

Re: Happy Mickey Mantle Day!

My Mantle memories are that he was a colossal drunkard. I used to go

to his bar near Columbus Circle back in another life. There was a bartender

there who quipped when asked if Mick was there, "yeah, he's in the back but

but doesn't really know where he is."
