Let's talk about Luis Severino

Reports are that the Mets are talking with the former Yankee pitcher. 29-year-old starter, sucked last year (6.65 ERA, 18 starts, 89.1 innings) but was much better in 2022 (3.18 in 102 innings). He's had some injury issues in the last couple of years. He was on the 60-day IL in 2022 with a low-grade lat strain (whatever that is) and his 2023 season ended in early September with a high–grade oblique strain. He's a free agent, and made $15 million in 2023, the final year of a five-year deal.

He'd pitch well, then trip over the foul line and pull something and go on the IL.

Not dependable.

Pass.

No. NO. NO!

They need pitchers who will be good in 2024, not 2017.

SNY reporting a one-year deal from the Mets for the erstwhile MFY.

Re: Let's talk about Luis Severino

Interesting dude. His fastball velo is good but that's about it. He was absolute shit in every other facet last year. His baseball savant page is an hilarious wall of blue with one red indicator showing he still throws hard, but '22 has more red than a CPAC convention.

His comps for movement, velo and batted ball feature names like Strider and Cole and deGrom. His ball moves a lot but batters hammered the crap out of his fastball. So hopefully they can Rick Peterson his ass back into a > 10K/9, 10+ win pitcher.

Senga, Quintana, Severino and other dudes. Can I get a Yamamoto, a Cease and a side of Woodruff?

Not exactly a splash.

But I hope it doesn't turn out to be a splat.

Have no idea how it will eventually work out, but a one year deal is the way to go here.

Mets saw all those 6+ ERA pitchers going to the Braves and said “Get me some of that!”

I like it as a one year deal. Not my money. Unkie Steve can cut bait on this guy if it's July and he's sucking big moon rocks

Ugh. Hope I'm wrong about him, but I'm not optimistic.

Give him 10 minutes with Rick Peterson

Well, there's little risk to this, other than the $13 million, of course. I'd be more upset about this if they had given up a worthwhile player to get him, but they didn't. Potential upside and little downside. The Mets need a lot of depth in their rotation, and this is one of many steps they're going to be taking.

Re: Let's talk about Luis Severino

i'm pretty ok with the signing. he's basically a SP5, with some remote lingering upside potential for an SP2/3. if he's got nothing in the tank, we still have megill, lucchesi, and the rest.

if he's all the arm we get, then of course this is a much different take. but as a depth piece with upside, sure.

Re: Let's talk about Luis Severino

Severino seems a little analogous to Lucas Giolito to me - guys who have fallen on very hard times but have actually put their elite stuff together in the past and dominated. I still wouldn't mind Gio as a 4/5 depth dude, but I wonder if that's too much gambling to have both.

Re: Let's talk about Luis Severino

The way to go when bringing in guys you're hoping for a rebound from is usually one year plus an option, helping the two parties split the risk, but I'm kind've thinking that, in 2023, all pitchers should get one-year deals.

Re: Let's talk about Luis Severino

I am conflating Severino with another Latin Yankee pitcher who iirc, shut us down in one of his first-ever starts, and whose career dates back before Severino (possibly many years before).

Who am I thinking of?

I don't think it's any of those 3. I may only be imagining this but the pitcher in question was very impressive vs the Mets then got hurt not long after.

I'm certain that you're thinking of Tyler Clippard de los Santos.

Re: Let's talk about Luis Severino

I think it was Severino, he just wasn't as rookie-ish as I remembered. Pretty sure was the game I recall, outpitching Steven Matz in a mismatch, naturally.

Re: Let's talk about Luis Severino

I don't think he's bad to have around as a depth piece. If he's a number five starter and doesn't totally suck, it's worth it.

Re: Let's talk about Luis Severino

Indeed, and that's almost always true. There's certainly a strong argument for adding depth pieces early in the offseason.

The only issue is that today, on November 30th, he's the team's #3 starter.

If that's still the case on March 30, I'll be concerned. But there are definitely more moves that will be made.

Re: Let's talk about Luis Severino

I thought the Mets were looking to spend money prudently

Not sure if this signing plays to that

Domingo German is the drunk Yankee

Not sure if Deivi Garcia plays into any of this
