Trivia Question

No its not a movie its an actual trivia question.

Name the actor who has acted in only 5 feature films, but all 5 of those films have been at least nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

I'll give hints if asked.

Go.

Can you give us the year span of the five films?

soupcan

1970s

James Cazale

GodFather, GodFather II, Deer Hunter, Dog Day Afternoon... Other two don't know

John Cazale, actually.

For something harder, name at least five actors who reprised roles in films that were not sequels of the first film.

soupy thinks he's so smart...

an actor from the 70s who only did 5 films, but all were at least nominated for awards?

well, that means he was probably a good actor who died young or suddenly quit acting.

but its probably not a star, like James Dean in the 50s, because i would easily recall a star that died young (or old, like Richard Farnsworth, with a short career).

so its probably a character actor who died young or quit.

When thinking about Oscar-winning films of the 70s, the first movies that jump to mind are movies with Pacino, Hoffman, DeNiro, Nicholson. .. so I think about there movies and the GODFATHER movies come to mind first... and low and behold, therein lives brother Fredo, played by the dead character actor John Cazale.

I checked on IMDB and see that Cazale is, indeed, the correct answer.

DING DING DING!
we have a winna!

Jimmy Cagney as "George M. Cohan"
Yankee Doodle Dandy & Seven Little Foys

...I may or may not be back with others

Peter O'Toole played King Henry II in Becket and The Lion in Winter. I can't think of any others.

Kevin Smith's Viewaskewniverse films technically aren't considered sequels with the exceptions of Clerks I and II

Jason Mews and Kevin Smith as "Jay & Silent Bob"
Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back

Jason Lee as Banky & Brodie
Mallrats & Chasing Amy & Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back

Ben Affleck as Holden
Chasing Amy & Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back

ect, ect, ect... (virtually all cameos in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back)

Willets Point

There was a Clerks II?

SteveJRogers

How about the regular voice actors in all Muppet Movies, Jim Henson, Frank Oz, ect, ect, ect al...

Not sure if with the exception of II, III and IV you can count the Star Trek films as sequels, but you can't count the TNG movies as sequels so thats

Patrick Stewart Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis
Jonathan Frakes Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis
Brent Spiner Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis
LeVar Burton Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis
Michael Dorn Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis
Gates McFadden Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis
Marina Sirtis Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis

And one of Dr. Crusher's assistants from the show was in at least Generations and First Contact

Not was, IS GOING to be a Clerks II, coming out sometime this year, don't know the release date yet

Wow. you guys are good.

Congrats to Captain America (Steve Rogers) & Vic (who I thought would be the person to get this).

Short interesting life/career this Cazale guy had.

Best buds since childhood with Pacino, engaged to Meryl Streep, was deathly ill while filming Deer Hunter and died shortly after it was released.

Even though you guys got it pretty quick I still think its a pretty cool trivia question though

That would explain why I've never heard of it. Kevin Smith must be desperate.

Another answers to the trivia question is Paul Rubens who played Pee Wee Herman in multiple films. Then there's that Ernest guy.

Hey now! Actually its a bit self-aggrandizing and a bit cathartic for Smith, during the process of revisiting Clerks for the Clerks X project couple of years ago (thats the 10th anniversary double disc set) that he felt he HAD to do this sequel. Well that and there has been alot of pressure over the years from fans to do a "right" followup for Dante and Randall (all other Smith films have neat and tidy endings except Clerks)

And the fact that he is an admitted Publicity Whore!

SteveJRogers

Also, Clerks II will only have Dante, Randall, Jay and Bob in terms of that Viewaskewniverse. There will be cameos by Jason Lee, Ethan Suplee, and other actors from the different films, but no other character. Funny thing about that, Lee in Clerks II looks like he walked off the set of My Name Is Earl leading speculation on the board that I saw the trailer linked to that Lee was in fact portraying his TV show character, Earl Hickey! He's not, but it would be quite a Smith way of doing things.

Um, Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy appearing as Mortimer and Randolph Duke from Trading Places in Coming to America.

Day late, dollar short.

Good pick.

I wouldn't count the Star Trek, since the films are all interrelated: they all have "Star Trek" in the title and are part of the same franchise.

I can think of three other people not mentioned: one pair (together) from the 1940s and one from the 1960s.

Hint: the pair made both films for the same director.
Hint: the 60s was an Oscar-winning actress who played a detective.
