Bannister faced two batters today and left with an injury. That doesn't sound like good news.

Edgy DC
May 18 2006 12:52 PM

OK, I'm sitting here laughing to myself, thinking about Scott Speizio in the lineup:

Pretty decent player once.

2002: BA: .285 /.371 / .436 // .807
But then he started to fade early.

2003: .265 / .326 / .453 // .779
Until he became a drain on his team.

2004: .215 / .288 / .346 // .634
And seemingly played his way out of baseball.

2005: .064 /.137 / .149 // .286
Well, thinks I, I guess that's the last time I'll see Scott Speizio.

2006: .263 / .368 / .544 // .912
Holy crap!

Edgy DC
May 18 2006 12:54 PM

]That doesn't sound like good news.

It stinks, to be perfectly honest.

Hillbilly

We're all in a need of Lima Time!

Scott Speizio has been washing away at a rate similar to Lima's, and if he can briefly resurrect himself, so can Jose.

That's my story and I'm paying a kid to stick to it for me.

That's a pretty awesome pinch-hitter the Cards got on their bench. </glass_half_empty_mode>

Speeze makes the first out of the game. It's killing me.

Rotblatt
May 18 2006 01:15 PM

I think this is Valentin's first MLB start at 2B.

Hillbilly
May 18 2006 01:20 PM

Ok, it’s settled. No hitter won’t be happening today.

Edgy DC

Nor the shutout.

Well, damn.

Hillbilly
May 18 2006 01:22 PM

There go the shut-out. Rolen takes 2nd when Beltran misses cut-off man.

Rotblatt
May 18 2006 01:24 PM

and so it begins . . .

Centerfield
May 18 2006 01:27 PM

Well this blows.

Hillbilly
May 18 2006 01:28 PM

2-0 nothing as Lima approaches 30 pitches.

Rotblatt
May 18 2006 01:31 PM

Entirely predictible. I can't for the life of me figure out why we gave this guy 3 starts.

Any update on Bannister? If he's out for any length of time, please, for the love of Christ, Opus Dei & Audrey Tautau, put Heilman in the fucking rotation.

MFS62
May 18 2006 01:32 PM

I don't want to see Darrin Oliver in this game.
This is a perfect chance to let Aaron Heilmann prove that he can pitch 5 innings, as a tryout for the rotation.
If Willie's not going to do that, let's see if Feliciano can re-capture some of his 4 inning magic from a few years ago (before Willie got here).
The next starter is on the current roster, if only Willie would give one of those two guys a chance.

Later

Centerfield
May 18 2006 01:38 PM

Spezio catches the Wright pop up. Making an impact in the early going.

Centerfield
May 18 2006 01:43 PM

12 innings without scoring a run.

From mets blog...
In his first start for Triple-A Norfolk, while rehabbing an injured hamstring, Brian Bannister was removed from the game with an ‘injury,’ after facing just two batters…

…unreal…

…Update…1:34 pm…

…the word from norfolk is that bannister left the game because he felt ‘discomfort’ in the recently injured hamstring…the trainers will treat it, and the team will most likely assess the situation later today, and again come tomorrow morning…

Rotblatt
May 18 2006 01:52 PM

Thanks, Hillbilly!

Lima with 2 outs and a runner at third. Pesky Ecksty at the plate.

Centerfield
May 18 2006 01:53 PM

Well this blows.

TransMonk
May 18 2006 01:54 PM

Heilman's career numbers as a starter:

5 wins 13 losses, 5.93 ERA, 134.2 IP, 144 H, 66 BB, 106 K

I know he's done very well as a reliever, but that's just it, a reliever.

I'm not sold that Aaron's the answer. Maybe he deserves a shot, but let's not pretend he's guaranteed to solve the problem...most likely he'll just give us more of the same while hurting the pen.

Lima blows..

Hillbilly
May 18 2006 01:58 PM

He's got his ERA up into double figures. Well maybe not, he did make an error saving himself a few points. Lima time is DFA time.

Hillbilly
May 18 2006 01:59 PM

But you gotta love the fist pump after what?4 runs and like 80 pitches in 2 innings?

Edgy DC
May 18 2006 01:59 PM

Most of his starting numbers were racked up before he made his adjustments and turned the corner. Even if not, a 5.93 ERA is looking pretty good right now.

The second-worst part about Lima is that he's disgracing the number 17. If I was Keith Hernandez I'd poison his postgame spread.

Too be clear, I'm speaking about Heilman here, in response to the Monk. I don't think this is too kind.

seawolf17

And Jerry Manuel has been ejected from the game. Maybe he was tired of watching Lima and just decided to start cursing at Tim Welke.

My bad---Lima's ERA is of course 9+ and I should have realized you weren't talking about him.

He's still younger than Danny Almonte, so why not? His wife (and STD, if we believe the lawsuit) might prove problematic, though.

Edgy DC
May 18 2006 02:24 PM

Can we talk of the Kaboomage please?

Manuel's fire and ire clearly inspired Beltran's power.

Find yourself Lima. Center. Reach deep. Draw the energy from your environment and feel it feed your core.

Feel it José.

Bottom of the lineup. Get 'em and get our boys back out there.

(and as I type, Bennett barely misses a HR and then grounds out to Reyes)

old original jb
May 18 2006 02:25 PM

Anyone ever see that Norman Rockwell painting where the kid is holding a bag full of silverware and sheepishly looking at his parents who are standing in the doorway watching? The title is "It's for the Arch, Dad".

Apparently, when they built the Gateway Arch, the archdiocese of St. Louis launched a public spirited campaign getting kids to collect scrap metals for the project. They quickly withdrew the campaign when reports started coming in of scenes like the one immortalized in the Rockwell painting.

Edgy DC

I was accepted to CPFU, but opted for Manhattan College instead.

Only Jose getting one of his runs not charged due to his own throwing error keeps him from keepign his earned-run-per-inning record intact.

Rotblatt
May 18 2006 03:14 PM

An analogy just came to me:

Jose Lima is to a pitching rotation as
the pitcher's spot is to the batting order.

He's a near-automatic win for the opposing team. I hope this experiment gets put out of its misery soon.

Mets trying not to wake the baby by going as quietly as possible. This game is no fun. I think I'll do some work now.

Tying run at the plate and his name is Castro.

Let him hit? I say yuh.

Willets Point
May 18 2006 03:49 PM

Cliff will probably hit a homer. Then the Mets will load the bases with one out. Then the next two batters will whiff. That would be the most torturous route to defeat at least.
