IGT 5/19/06 - Mets vs. Yankees

Gwreck
May 19 2006 01:17 AM

Yeah, starting this a little early, but we need to get the mojo workin' early and often.

We'll start this with a favorite rally song of mine:

I know that you believe in me, that's all I ever need, uh huh
No, no, nothing's gonna stop me, nothing will be scaring me, oh no
Hey baby, it's the only way out
Oh, little darling, now c'mon, what's it all about?

Standing on top of the world for a little while
Standing on top of the world
Gonna give it all we got

Oh, I know it won't hurt, I gotta have a little taste
I just wanna sink my teeth in that fine piece of real estate, yeah
Hey baby, make it nice and sweet
Oh, little darling, let's take a walk down easy street

Standing on top of the world for a little while
Standing on top of the world
Let's give it all we got

Baby, I've gotta feel it
Oh, I wanna touch it now
See the whole wide world turn upside down

Someday, we'll be standing on top of the world
For a little while
Standing on top of the world

Standing on top of the world for a little while.
Standing on top of the world
Gonna give it all we got

(Standing on top) Hey, baby
(Standing on top) Hey darling
Standing on top
Standing on top
Standing on top

Do they get this one in?

If not maybe they could do some kind of cool 2 statium day night double header...never mind

ScarletKnight41

They'll get the game in. They'll skip BP, but they'll get the game in.

Centerfield
May 19 2006 03:26 PM

My prediction: Scoreless through 5. In the top of the 6th, MFY's scratch out a run to take a 1-0 lead. Mets load the bases with no one out in the bottom of the sixth. Delgado hits a shot that appears to be headed out of the ballpark. At that instant, the Umpires stop the game, order the ball to stop mid-flight, and we have our first rain delay. Downpour ensues. After an hour, the game is called. MFY's win 1-0.

I bet anything if Wagner gets to pitch tonight the TV guys will show Rivera's face when " enter sandman" is blasting.

I was at the first rainout that neccessitated that infamous game.

Funny thing is that I was traveling with a college buddy and was going to meet other college buds there. One of them lived out in Far Rockaways and his car broke down, just as we were about to park at Yankee Stadium. So we head over to pick him up and we get there as the deluge is underway. We see Ventura do his best Rick Dempsey act, game gets called and we dropped off our friend back in the Far Rockaways. In other words, we passed Shea Stadium 4 times that night, Yankee Stadium 3 times and saw no baseball!

if the bottom of the 6th isn't completed then a run that scored in the top of the 6th can't win the game.

i think the mets would be very happy with 0-0 after 5 considering that Gonzalez is pitching against Johnson.

That Yanqui lineup might not be exactly correct, but the starting positions are.

Also, Bubba Crosby DL'd, something named Matt Smith called up

Gwreck
May 19 2006 06:37 PM

I think his name is Mitch Jones. OF. 6-20-.239 (815 OPS), 41 K in 134 AB at Columbus. If he plays it'll be his ML-debut.

Mitch Jones was once the pride of the Staten Island Yankees.

So other than the fact that I was late with the lineups, had them slightly off,
and had the call-up's name wrong - the rest of my info was pretty good huh?

Gwreck
May 19 2006 06:48 PM

It was a great KTE. Only reason I was able to scoop you on the lineups (unintentionally, sorry 'bout that) was because I got a call from Shea and had them read me the lineup off the scoreboard.

ScarletKnight41
May 19 2006 06:48 PM

Melky Cabrera was in AA Trenton a year ago.

ScarletKnight41
May 19 2006 07:20 PM

Blech - 2-0 MFY's in the first with two outs. A-Rod and Torre complain about the call at second that resulted in the first out.

ScarletKnight41

Make that 3-0.

Jeremi Gonzalez is NOT the answer to our pitching woes.

People called me the scandaliser
The world was my appetiser
I turned gangs into fertiliser
King of the New York streets

I broke hearts like window panes
For breakfast I'd eat nails and chain.
To my kingdom I'd proclaim
King of the New York streets

I floored my accelerator
All the way to the equator
Just a local gladiator
King of the New York streets

Well. I was only 16 years old
So what could I have known?
In my mind these passing years
The legend sure has grown

People come from miles around
To see. my royal tenement sound
Always up and never down
King of the New York streets

Schools gave me nothing needed
To my throne I proceeded
Every warning went unheeded
King of the New York streets

I stood tall from all this feeling
Thumped my heed on heavens ceiling
Shooting dice and double-dealing
King of the New York streets

Each time I jumped behind the wheel
Of a pin-striped custom Oldsmobile
The guys would bow and the girls would squeal
King of the New York streets

Local bullies I deflated
Back street jive that I translated
Top-Ten girls were all that I dated
King of the New York streets

I didn't need no bodyguard
I just ruled from my backyard
Livin' fast, livin' hard
King of the New York streets

Well I was wise; In my own eyes.
I awoke one day and I realized
You know this attitude comes from cocaine lies

You see, tonight's rally song is actually sung from Jeter's point of view. Bunting? Please.

That was wonderful! Thank God the Yankees are kind enough to still broadcast on Channel 9 on Friday night for us non paying "locals" to watch!

Bullpen summary:
.
The last MFY baserunner was Bernie's infield single (the one Reyes smothered in the hole saving the base loaded) w/2 outs **IN THE 4th**

Even once you throw out the first inning (other than that Mrs. Lincoln how was the play?) the Yanx totalled just 5 singles (two infield) and a double w/10 Ks.

Those (lack of) arms came back to haunt the MFYs. Damon was *REAL* shallow - almost like an OFer would be if there were LESS THAN 2 outs and a ball over your head wins the game even if it's caught. Nice shot by Wright but that had some hangtime to it and is prolly caught 8 times out of 10 under most circumstances.

Great fucking game.

And an IGT that pretty much exactly mirrored my thoughts throughout.

Nice work, people.

Tuned in during the 6th inning so I got to see this pitching duel as Gary & Ron were talking about the messy slugfest that preceded it. Beautiful ending. My first son is to be named David Wright Ortiz Point.

Just caught the last three innings on DVD--a slugfest turned into a relievers' duel, botjh games exciting and amazin'.

You got to be happy for David Wright there. What a wonderful young player he is, focussed, smart, supremely skilled, and --if such a thing exists---clutch as hell. Don't understand why WWSB didn't pinch-run for LoDuca there--you were facing extra innings, you've got a day game tomorrow, and on some hits to the OF ( a two out single to Bernie's glove side, for example) Endy scores and LoDuca doesn't. But Wright's hit makes such quibbles moot. Fantastic player, thrilling game. Couldn't script a better one.

I wouldn't exactly call Mr. Wright "clutch" quite yet. Bases loaded, 1 out, down by one... But he is showing signs of improvement.

I thought about running for LoDuca as soon as he got on but rejected it. I might have if were the run needed to tie a game - but the odds that the diff in speed would make the crucial difference were real small and it's a 2-player move (burns Chavez & Castro) leaving only Franco on the bench of a game headed for extra innings. If it were Castro out there insted of LoDuca then I might.

Also, to answer someone's point about that ball being too close to take--it could easily go the other way, that great hitters, especialy great OBP guys like A-Rod play by the Jordan rules. Or in this case the Ted Williams rule: "Son, Mr. WiIlliams will let know which pitches are strikes by whacking them off the right field wall for ya.."

It looked like, to me, that A-Rods left foot missed 2nd base and the tag was applied before his right foot touched.

For what its worth I'm not too certain Jetah actually got a glove on Reyes when he was caught stealing. He swiped at him but I never saw conclusively that he touched him.

I s'pose if the ball is there and the play's that close you get that call, but still...

I was thinking about this earlier today. Isn't it nice that we have a player who can stick in the MFY fans' craws like that :)
