Pink Bats

MFS62

On Mothers' Day (this upcoming Sunday), major leaguers will be using specially made pink bats and will be wearing pink wrist bands to bring attention to charities that support research into Women's diseases.

How do you feel about this (not the charities, the way MLB is supporting them)? Would you have shown support differently?

Nice show of support.

A donation to some of the charities from the MLB & the players union would be even better.

Pink bats?

Yuck.

After the game, each player should autograph his pink bat and auction it off for a breast cancer charity.

I wonder, if a player breaks his pink bat in the first inning, does he have a pink backup?

Elster88
May 11 2006 09:31 AM

How about pink uniforms? Pink bases? Pink cleats? Pink grass? Pink jockstraps?

Yancy Street Gang
May 11 2006 09:34 AM

I don't like the idea of pink grass, but all of the other stuff would be fine by me.

I don't think I'd place an eBay bid on the pink jockstrap, though.

I worry that perhaps there's some Trojan Horse stealth going on here.

By allowing promotion for an unimpeachable charity onto the field and equipment during game play --- ribons on the jersey last year, bats this year --- they're softening up fan resistance for Nextel logos on the field/uniforms/equipment in the near future.

Excellent idea. This will draw attention big time to a worthy cause. I especially like that the players will be signing their bats and those will be auctioned off - they will likely bring in a lot of money with that.

Remember the (thankfully) aborted attempt to put Spiderman on the bases as a promo for that movie? You may be right, Edgy. But right now I'd give them the benefit of the doubt - they're doing something for a worthy charity. Doing something similar is still over the horizon. But your comment is worthy of the prediction forum. And I wouldn't bet against it happening some time in the future.

As for other stuff in this thread, I heard that only about 50 pink bats were made for this Sunday. So I wouldn't think anyone has a spare in case one gets shattered.

And, as for the Piazza comment. When I wrote (and posted here) "Pardon Me Boy, Is That Piazza in a Tutu?" I was once again ahead of my time. But I don't think my song parody mentioned that it was pink.

The path of good intentions...

Man denied bag says Angels discriminatedAssociated Press

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- A man who was denied a red nylon tote bag during a Mother's Day promotion at an Angels baseball game has filed a sex and age discrimination lawsuit against the team.

The class action claim filed by Michael Cohn, a Los Angeles psychologist, alleges that thousands of males and fans under age 18 are entitled to $4,000 in damages each because they were treated unequally at last May's promotion. Women over 18 received the gifts.

Angel officials said Cohn was the only person who complained about the giveaway and that the team is proud of its promotions.

"Historically, we have tried to appeal on those special days that might be nationally noted holidays or special occasions," team spokesman Tim Mead said, adding he could not comment directly on the suit because he hadn't seen it. "We have tailored programs or giveaways accordingly."

The team responded to a complaint letter that Cohn wrote last June by sending him four tote bags and a letter stating the team "ran out of the item that day and had to order more."

"They claimed they didn't have any more bags, but my client said there was a mountain of bags stacked so high a show dog couldn't have jumped over them," said Alfred Rava, Cohn's San Diego-based attorney.

Cohn could not be reached for comment.

This weekend's Mother's Day promotion will offer tote bags to the first 25,000 fans over age 18, rather than cater specifically to women. Mead would not say whether the change was in response to Cohn's complaint.

Rava said the altered promotion still violates the civil rights of fans under age 18.

Cohn's suit names as defendants the Angels and the Corinthian Colleges, which sponsored the event through an affiliate.

Is this the legal standard?

OE: Sometimes I'm not so sure corporations shouldn't be allowed to superficially discriminate. The state clearly shouldn't but, sure, let corporations dig their own grave.

Easy to say, of course.

In California it is. Whenever there's a promotional giveaway, they have to have a show dog stationed at each gate.

Once the show dog is able to leap over the pile, the team is allowed to stop giving away items. If your gate has a long-legged dog, you're less likely to get the item. Always try to enter through the gate with the dachshund.

The saddest part about the Mets wielding pink bats this weekend is that we're now precluded from making fun of MFY players (who are doing the same thing) with pink bats.

On Monday, when the back pages are full of pictures of Jeter and his wittle pink bat, I'll only be able to look mournfully at them and sigh.

Much like A-Rod when he and Jeter are alone in the locker room.

Hey-ho!

Very nice, WP.

Looking at that picture--even with it all dolled up--still makes me angry.

Had the umps not overruled the "safe" call, I think I probably would've had a stroke, broken my tv, or both.

What a douchebag.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think the pink bats are bit too much. If they want to do ribbons, or patches, or hell, even pink hats, I think I'd be ok. But to me, extending it to the actual equipment is going too far. No pink bats, no pink balls, no pink gloves.

And I realize it's for a good cause (if it wasn't I would be up in arms) and so it's not really a big deal. But I just don't see why you have to mess with the equipment.

You could still sign and sell and donate to charity without the items being pink. Hell, I would pay more for a brown or black bat than a pink one anyway.

"i just bought Beltran's bat in an auction."

"Which one, the pink one?"

"Yeah."

"Dude, that's the wussiest looking bat I've ever seen."

One of the greatest pro-wrestlers of all time made pink his trademark...

Then again, maybe rolling around with another sweaty oiled up guy in a pre-determined exhibition isn't exactly "manly" in the first place!

Heh, true, habit I guess, Mike Easler and Don Mattingly were others that I know off hand with that nickname and usually they had "The" before "Hit Man"

Or at least Donnie Baseball's usage only comes from a Nike poster...

Edgy DC
May 14 2006 12:49 PM

Maatingly's "nickname" was as contrived as they come. That it came off the back of a former teammate should have been enough for him to disassociate from the usage.

May 14 2006 01:33 PM

I do prefer Donnie Baseball, especially since it was ripped off of Easler

SteveJRogers

Plus in the poster he's not even sporting his familar mustache and stubble!

And upon further review, no "The" on his nickname, ditto with Mike Easler!

Although his wikipedia entry does say "The Hitman" but then again with Wiki entries being whatever someone types they are bound to have scores of un checked facts!

I did a google image search and came up empty on Easler "Hit Man" product images BTW! A bunch featuring Mattingly's sig (forged or not who knows) with "Hit Man" underneath

Funny because I always associate "Donnie Baseball" with Mattingly more, has a nice "Donnie Brasco" and "Teddy Ballgame" combo.

Although it was way too corny when a host of a talk radio show used that nickname to call Don LaGreca of 1050 ESPN Radio "Donnie Hockey" and was told by Don himself to go with "Donnie Pucks" if he wanted to call LaGreca anything!

Tom Keegan when talking to LaGreca previewing a Devil playoff series, it was clear LaGreca wanted no part of a nickname and Keegan's partner Wally Mathews suggested "Donnie Pucks" instead!
