"Take it to the Limit" vs. "Why Can't I Be You?"
Eagles

"I Can't Tell You Why" vs. "Close to Me"
Cure. It took the latecoming Timothy B. Scmitt to give the Eagles soul, but he's up against a really unique song here.

"One of These Nights" vs. "Friday I'm in Love"
Cure. I don't like "Friday" nearly as much as Ms. Edgy but the funky guitar and falsetto harmony bridge of "OoTN" just makes me feel seventies awkward.

"Life in the Fast Lane" vs. "In Between days"
Cure.

"The Long Run" vs. "Fascination Street"
Cure. "Street" takes too long getting anything interesting going beyond the bass riff, then, once it does, it wraps things too fast because dammit, it's the single, and every other song on this record is eight minutes. "Long Run" sounds too much like Don Henley told Joe Walsh to give him all his leftover riffs from "Life's Been Good." Narrow victory to the Cure here.

"Seven Bridges Road (live)" vs. "Lovesong"
Cure.

"Take it Easy" vs. "Boy's Don't Cry"
Cure.

"Already Gone" vs. "Pictures of You"
Cure. "Pics" rules.

"Lyin' Eyes" vs. "Just Like Heaven"
Cure. Hard to beat.

"Hotel California" vs. "Love Cats"
Cure. I wonder if I can hear "Hotel" anymore.

I'm a bigtime Eagles apologist. I can talk about them had a young Glynnis Johns producing their first 2.5 albums when he already had the best resume in rock, having already worked with the Beatles, Stones, Zep, and the Who; how they nonetheless resisted him, and wanted to rock while he envisioned them as a harmony act, a countrified Beach Boys; how Henley's vision of California is misinterpreted completely and is a deep, cutting, cautionary dissection, that cuts to the heart of not just California, but the darkness of the American spirit and of human yearnings, both fleshly and supernal. I'll defend them until right up until about ten seconds after they fired Don Felder. What was that about?

And I fully acknowledge the Cure's flaws, their whininess, their histrionic-ness, their effeteness, their self-indulgence, their wrecklessly Pied-Pipering their followers toward a cliff of despair.

And yet I adore the Cure a whole lot more than the Eagles, and I award them a 9-1 win. The Eagles just can't break my heart.

Bizaro world: I'm more generous to the Eagles than Edgy. Next I'm going to get Glavine pajamas.

"I Can't Tell You Why" and "The Long Run" almost earned ties.

Really, it's not about being ungenerous to the "Eagles," but about being gaga for the Cure.

I know the Eagles and I voted in the last Cure matchup only because it was mostly clips vs. clips. I don't know the Cure songs well enough, however, to vote vs. the Eagles and I think Eagles fans are probably breathing a sigh of relief over that.

"Take it to the Limit" vs. "Why Can't I be you?" - Cure
"I Can't Tell You Why" vs. "Close to Me" - Cure
"One of These Nights" vs. "Friday I'm in Love" - Cure
"Life in the Fast Lane" vs. "In Between days" - Eagles, possibly their best song.
"The Long Run" vs. "Fascination Street" - Eagles
"Seven Bridges Road (live)" vs. "Lovesong" - Cure
"Take it Easy" vs. "Boy's Don't Cry" - Eagles
"Already Gone" vs. "Pictures of You" - Tough matchup. Eagles
"Lyin' Eyes" vs. "Just Like Heaven" - The Cure, easily.
"Hotel California" vs. "Love Cats" - The guitar solo isn't bad but the song was never that good, even the first 100,000 times you heard it. Cure

Cure wins, 6-4.

I actually like a good deal of the Eagles' songs but wow it's tough to be objective when I hate Don Henley and Glenn Frey with a burning passion. F*ck them, their manager Irving Azoff and their bandmates for their greed. No chance in hell they'll ever take responsibility for breaking the $100 ticket barrier for a national tour and pricing themselves out of the reach of most music fans.

Other than The Long Run, did Felder miss any other albums? He returned for Hell Freezes Over tour, right?

Edgy DC
May 12 2006 02:28 PM

Yup. Although he wasn't quite original. He joined during the sessions for the third album in 1974. He was brought in to lay down a slide guitar track and the band fell in love with him.

He was fired after the "Hell Freezes Over" tour, I suspect because he's not a frontman on anything, making him disposable, and they were being greedy, replacing him with a salaryman guitarist who doesn't get paid as an equal partner.

Lawsuits are flying around, but I don't know the particulars. I"m just guessing. Those $100 tickets are about 900% more than I'm willing to pay to see the Eagles.

The Beatles were voted in two years after Abba and three years after the Eagles.

Edgy DC
May 12 2006 02:58 PM

I noticed. It can be argued that the Beatles were a superior act but not necessariy a superior vocal group to those two others, but that's a pretty tough argument to make.

My guess is that a group's induction is a higher priority in a given year if somebody from the group is willing to show in Sharon.
