Yea, those are priceless tho' I would have matched up Janie's Got a Gun with Murder by Numbers. I guess you were going for the women's names thing.

"Driven to Tears"vs."Cryin'" The Police
"Walking on the Moon"vs."Walk This Way" Aerosmith
- - - I like "Walking on the Moon" but "Walk this Way" one of Aerosmith's best so I'll give it to them.
"Canary In A Coalmine"vs."Toys In The Attic The Police
""Can't Stand Losing You"vs."I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" The Police
- - - This one wins by sooooooooo much.
"Message In A Bottle"vs."Love In An Elevator" The Police
"Next To You"vs."Livin' On The Edge" The Police
"Roxanne"vs."Janie's Got A Gun" The Police
"So Lonely"vs."Sweet Emotion" The Police
"Bring On The Night"vs."Dream On" Aerosmith
- - - Not a fan of "Dream On" (aka "Stairway to Heaven Remixed") but it goes against a weak Police track so I'll give it the nod.
"Murder By Numbers"vs."Big Ten Inch Record" Tie
- - - Don't remember either of these so I guess they're equally unmemorable.

The Police 7.5:2.5 Aerosmith

Nor mine as it applies to The Police, but I got manhandled last time I challenged with these guys using a different lineup. So far this one seems to have a wider appeal.

Synchronicity, given hindsight, has a lot more in common with Sting's solo career than with the Police catalog.

Thank You. And beside that being a big reason its not well represented. The first three albums were just soooooo much better (as Papa Dickshot would attest if he were here).

That was my guess, too...I'm not the biggest Police fan ever but do have and and enjoy the box set quite a bit.

Don't mean to cause a ruckus, of course...one of my favorite parts of the BLC is considering what is and isn't in the lineup, etc.

There's no love for America's Greatest Rock Band on this board, which amazes and saddens me all at the same time, and I knew this would be an ugly matchup. You people suck. The Police are mostly overwrought drivel; a poor man's U2/REM.

Edgy DC

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on May 19 2006 09:37 AM

It's a pretty weak argument when the best way you can deride them is by calling them a poor man's version of two bands who post-date them, while also sounding in no way like them.

You've said "America's greatest rock band" before. I'd like to hear that argument fleshed out.

soupcan
May 19 2006 09:20 AM

Edgy you took the words right of my mouth (must have been while you were kiss-ing me)!

Poor man's version!!!!???? The Police were THE biggest band in the world in the early 80's. How can you say they are imitations of U2 & REM?! If anything they influenced both these bands. Your naivete is showing wolfie.

As I've said before, The Police brought ska and reggae into the mainstream. A very significant band and a case could and should be made for them to be a top 10 band. Overwrought drivel!? You've been listening to too much Sting and not nearly enough Police. A common mistake I'm sure but one I wouldn't expect a rock n' roll connoisseur like yourself to make.

Now you want to talk about poor man's versions of bands, let's take a look at Aerosmith. Hmmmmmm, I wonder if there were ever any other bands with a full-lipped, reed thin lead singer who strutted around whilst emitting hermaphroditic suspicions?

Any come to mind?

Edgy DC
May 19 2006 09:36 AM

On the first Amnesty International tour (first show?), the Police, symbolically announcing that they were done and intending to go out on top, made a show of turning their instruments over to U2 onstage. They didn't have energy to stay on top, U2 did and was heading there, so it was gracious surrender at a chartiable event.

But Sting, in one of his last punk moments, turned his back just before the handoff, started twisting the knobs on his bass, and said to Summers and Stewart, "Make sure they're all out of tune."

I was just getting you cats all riled up. It's all good. I enjoy the Police; I'm just a big Aerosmith fan.

As far as the "America's Greatest Rock Band" thing goes, it's the combination of longevity & success. They certainly have their detractors, but there's nobody better at what they do.

That's a bit harsh Soupy. I mean "Dream On" is clearly a remake of "Stairway to Heaven". Aerosmith has the talent and ability to mimic multiple rock bands.

Longevity + Success might produce America's most successful band.
For "Greatest" there needs to be serious consideration of quality.

I'm curious as to who you'd put at spaces 2-5 if Aerosmith really is #1.

Edgy DC
May 19 2006 05:42 PM

There being nobody better at what somebody does doesn't make for easy comparisons.

There's nobody better at what Iggy Pop does, I guess. It doesn't make him Caruso.

Edgy DC
May 19 2006 05:50 PM

But, on the other hand, that's what we're here to unveil from mystery. According to the board the following American bands are better than Aerosmith until you prove otherwise.

3) Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band
4) The Doors
5) The Jimi Hendrix Experience (part American)
6) Talking Heads
7) Creedence Clearwater Revival
8) The Velvet Underground
13) Guns N' Roses
14) Nirvana
15) Prince & the Revolution
19) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

If you win, you can make a point of only challenging American bands. Bands who come into your town, help you party down.
