Bring it On!

Looks like "Crush" is trying to sneak in there twice. Counter with a double dose of "La Bamba".

Sorry - I'll fix that.

Is she up, or do we wait until the soup challenges have closed?
|
ScarletKnight41 May 17 2006 09:27 PM |
Well, I'm going to be out all day tomorrow, so this can stay up until it's time to rock.

I'm of the opinion that since the BLC has slowed down considerably on its own due to declining and diverted interests that we don't really need to artificially slow things down at this time.

I always liked Carter Buford on the drums. If there's a member of DMB I have a problem with it's Dave Matthews with is incoherent & nasal vocals, how he tries to be cool by acting like a black guy, and his general obnoxious arrogance. The band named after him is too talented for him.

Sorry, Dave. Sorry, Scarlet.

Maybe I'm over-reading, but I always thought their take on "The Monkey Song" was almost a commentary on an immigrant's experience, trying to adapt to native speech and custom, but still being an outsider. Now I'm the king of the swingers1 1 Note the double meaning of "swingers." See, he can be accepted as a swinging entertainer, but not --- as we see later in the verse --- as a social equal. 2 He's at the top of his game, but he's hit a glass ceiling, like Lena Horne, entertaining at the swankiest clubs, but not able to be a member. 3 This is fascinating, "Man-Cub" is the name their calling Mowgli, the child protagonist of Jungle Book, but the singer, while being otherwise articulate, drops the final consonant of each syllable of that name, so it comes out as "Ma' Cuh," and, if you're like me, on initial listen, you might hear, I wanna be a man, AmericaYou might think that until you recall the original Disney song. But later in the song, he adds Now don't try to kid me, Man Cub (America)If you just allow your ears to make the jump from "Man Cub" to "America," it's a really moving (though goofy) song about an immigrant trying to walk the walk and talk the talk of an American, but unable to fit in. Why is he doing this? To fufill a dream he's committed to. How American a story. Not --- let it be known --- suggesting here that Chicano Americans are monkeys, or that Caucasian Americans treat them as such. Only that the singer seems to feel like one as an immigrant. The harder he tries to be something else the more he resents what he is. He should just be what he is, Mowgli knows of the monkey, and any Lobos listener with ears knows of the band. They should both just keep swinging.

"Proudest Monkey" would have faced off well against "I Wanna Be Like You."

Maybe so, Edgy. But I think Big Bad Voodoo Daddy ruined that song for me forever. Sometimes that kinda thing happens.

Talent doesn't always equal accomplishment.

True, and given this reminder I kind of want to go back and edit that comment. I do think though that Beauford does have quite a bit of accomplishment. I worry less about him keeping a strict beat, although he does, mostly -- it's just a very, very deep pocket -- because the bass and acoustic guitar in the band can keep the rhythm. The drums in the band are at times serving the traditional function of a "melody" rather than the rhythm instrument.

Accomplishment apparently doesn't equal attainment either.
