IGT 5/20/06, Mets (Pedro) vs. Yankees (Mussina)

Gwreck
May 20 2006 01:16 AM

Alright, this worked well for game one, so this afternoon's rally song will keep our theme going...Let's Go METS!

World turns black and white
Pictures in an empty room
Your love starts fallin' down
Better change your tune

We'll reach for the golden ring
Reach for the sky
Baby just spread your wings

And get higher and higher
Straight up we'll climb
We'll get higher and higher
Leave it all behind

Run run run away
Like a train runnin' off the track
YOu got the truth being left behind
It falls between the cracks

Standing on broken dreams
Never losing sight
Well just spread your wings

We'll get higher and higher
Straight up we'll climb
We'll get higher and higher
Leave it all behind

So baby dry your eyes
Save all the tears you've cried
Oh, that's what dreams are made of

'Cause we belong
In a world that must be strong
Well, that's what dreams are made of

We'll get higher and higher
Straight up we'll climb
Higher and higher
Leave it all behind

We'll get higher and higher
Who knows what we'll find

So baby dry your eyes
Save all the tears you've cried
Oh, that's what dreams are made of

Oh, baby we belong
In a world that must be strong
Well, that's what dreams are made of

And in the end
On dreams we will depend
'Cause thats what love is made of

Easy now, it worked just fine last night. I wouldn't have broken out the Van Halen unless it was an important game... :)

Joe Buck is so annoying, Jeter on second.

Gwreck
May 20 2006 01:31 PM

No matter, he gets steroids to pop up and gets slappy looking.

metirish
May 20 2006 01:31 PM

Pedro seems to just have a great sence for the big moments, made Gay-Rod look foolish just now.

abogdan
May 20 2006 01:31 PM

Pedro gets out of the jam.

If you think Buck's bad, just wait until we have to sit through Joe Morgan tomorrow night.

metirish
May 20 2006 01:32 PM

I think my main problem with Buck is that he thinks he's so funny, Morgan is just a fool that gets played by Miller.

Gwreck
May 20 2006 01:36 PM

Damn! Another error on Rodriguez. How sad.

May 20 2006 01:37 PM

Reyes to 3rd after stealing 2nd and a wild throw by Stinnett..

Rockin' Doc

Reyes says, "Speed Kills."

ScarletKnight41
May 20 2006 01:40 PM

An RBI double for Beltran makes it 1-0 good guys!

abogdan
May 20 2006 01:40 PM

Beltran listens to the "hit it to LF" advice. Cairo can't play LF as Beltran drives in Reyes and ends up at 2B. 1-0.

metirish
May 20 2006 01:40 PM

Beltran brings him home with a double over Cairo....I think Beltran has won the fans over....finally.

ScarletKnight41
May 20 2006 01:44 PM

Just like his last at bat, Wright hits a catchable long fly over Damon's head for an RBI double!

2-0 good guys!

TheOldMole

If Beltran isn't a fan favorite by now, there's no hope.

Bret Sabermetric
May 20 2006 01:46 PM

Which reminds me: Does Wright get credited with a double in last night's game? Picture-perfect demonstration that he could have made second easily--so how does that get scored when it's a game winner? Like Ventura's grand-slam single?

ScarletKnight41
May 20 2006 01:48 PM

It's a single. And he's happy to have it.

TransMonk
May 20 2006 01:48 PM

It was a single...he never made it to second...just like '99.

Pierzynski goes down loudly in Chicago.

WOW! Barrett really popped him one.

Bret Sabermetric
May 20 2006 02:08 PM

Fox just played a home-plate collision--A.J. Pierzynski barrelled into Michael Barrett, Barrett threw a punch--and BOTH of them got thrown out?!?!? WTF? That was as clean an attempt to knock the ball out of Barrett's hand as I (Or McCarver) could imagine.

ScarletKnight41

Guess we'll have to wait to see the whole event.
It looked innocent enough until the second time they bumped.

I was still quite surprized by that punch.
He laid into him.

Pedro Ks that shortstop guy on that "other" New York team. :)

Gwreck

This is a perfect example of the over specialization of bullpens in modern baseball. Sanchez was going well and should have started (and hopefully finished) the ninth, but not in today's era. Now the roles are laid out in advance. Set up man pitches the eighth then you go to your closer. Seems no one is willing to deviate from the formulaic approach.

Come on Bradford. End this inning so we can score in the bottom of the ninth and break their hearts again.

Edgy DC
May 20 2006 04:08 PM

Willie, I secondguess thee.

TheOldMole
May 20 2006 04:09 PM

Alright, no big deal, we can beat Rivera. RALLY TIME!!!

Rockin' Doc
May 20 2006 04:11 PM

I don't think Reyes or Jeter did anything wrong on Damon's ground ball to short. It wasn't hit hard enough to turn two with Damon running.

TransMonk
May 20 2006 04:11 PM

Stupid...with a 4 run lead you leave your closer who saved a game last night in the pen. Trot Julio or Feliciano out there. Now it's going to take 6 pitchers to win this game after Pedro pitched a shutout through 7 innings.

Jack Reed: http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/R/jack-reed.shtml

A Yankee scrub. His only major league homer won an extra inning game for the Yankees against the Tigers. IIRC, that was a game in which Jim Bouton went seven innings in relief and showed the Yankees he should be a starter.

That's kind of how they played the last few innings.

Randolph acted as though it would be a challenge to the fates to stop the Yankees' rally by pulling out Wagner or an affront to the baseball gods to try to keep Cairo from advancing.

Zvon
May 20 2006 05:19 PM

Ya know--if Wagner gets em 1-2-3 in the 9th Willie does good.

Shuts the door- preserves Pedros win. Willie looks wonderful.

But Billy didnt.
If he was inserted to get out the meat of the lineup-he didnt.
Go out, slap him on the back and say nice try.
And pull him there.
At that point Willie froze like a deer in the headlights
and let Wags hang in the breeze.
I do not understand this.
I can see the logic in bringing Wags in, tho I may not agree with it.

But why do you leave him there the way he was throwing?
How many freakin pitches did he throw? 30?
He did his job last night in style, which, BTW, is to [u:002a5d771e]save[/u:002a5d771e] games.

Here his job was to get the meat of the order out--he didnt do his job.

You dont lose any face by pulling him after the walk to Cabrera loads the bases.
If not there, then definatly after he hit Bernie.

Im just flabergasted by the ninth.
That was so ugly.

old original jb
May 20 2006 05:27 PM

One of the ugliest innings I've ever seen.
And it wasn't the meat of the order. It started with the bottom of the order.

And I still want to know why Miguel Cairo is given a free pass around the bases.

This looked like one of those Harlem Globetrotters games, and the Mets were the Washington Generals.

Yup. What makes it even worse for me was that I lost my biggest I-told-you-so ever--I DVDed the game and practically coughed up my liver bitching when when WWSB took out Sanchez and put in Wagner. Wasn't concerned so much that Wagner would blow it as much as Wagner worked last night and could be needed tomorrow, while Sanchez looked terrific. I was all WTF is he doing,? and I'm still all WTF. For me this just happened 15 minutes ago, and I'm still red in the face.

I don't blame Wagner at all--this is ALL on WWSB.

bleh.

This game sucked. I'd much rather have been watching it on tv than have some yankee fuck smirk over his shoulder at me every time Rivera struck out another over-anxious Met.

The first 8 innings were pretty fucking sweet, though.

Sanchez should've pitched the 9th. Willie should've pulled Wagner after he walked the bases full. From where I sat (fairly far away), Matsui should've gotten rid of the ball faster. Castro should've tried to stop Cairo from running wild.

Ultimately, I blame Wagner, but we all knew Wags didn't have it way before Willie did. Shades of Petey 2003. If this had been the game that ended our playoff hopes, Willie would be gone.

U-G-L-Y.

We'd better fucking win tomorrow.

FWIW: 3 of the Mets last 4 losses have been by one run.

This picture says it all.
Wags should never have been in a position to get so flustered.

It was tough to watch.

This is just one game, and one we could afford to let get away - at this time anyway.
Phils got beat by the boSox and the Braves were tramuatized by Arizona.

The team will bounce back.
Tonight would be nice.

Get Wags back out there ASAP, in a save situation.
Tonight?
Id like to see that, but i think he threw too many pitches in that dibolical.
So---we kick azz 2nite-
Off day Monday-
Then bring on the Phils- and thats much more important.

And you were right Bret- Pierzynski had no business being tossed.
Where the hell do they get these umps that dont know what they are doin?

I'm still waiting to learn what Pierzynski did that warranted ejection. Make contact with the catcher blocking the plate? Hit Barrett in the fist with his chin?

It was a bang-bang play--runner and ball arriving simultaneously--and you got to expect to get banged up if you're Barrett. if you don't want the bang-bang play, do a Piazza and take a step or two forward and reach back to swipe Piersynski with the ball, but you can't stand there in the basepath without the ball and complain afterwards that you got banged into.

I've just now (time is 8:41pm) come up for air. Haven't listened to the radio, read a paper or gone on line since that-what-must-not-be spoken-of happened yesterday.

I'm thinking that it is THE worst loss in my years of being a Mets fan. A perfect storm of a loss. I'm still shell shocked. Don't even know what's going on with the game right now and won't know until tomorrow mornong.

Billy Wagner has ruined my life.

Me, too. I couldn;t stop thinking about it, all night and all day--and all I wanted was for the Yankees to lose to Pedro. I can't imagine what it was like for you guiys who care if the Mets win or lose. It was a killer, a gut-cruncher, a monster, a bitch, a hell of a loss. I feel for you, Soupy, I really do.

That's too bad because you're missing a good one tonight

Okay. I'm a little better now.

I was watching the Sopranos last night and decided to check the score. Tuned in just in time to see Wright let Jetah's grounder go under his glove and score two runs.

Great timing.

I watched the rest of Sopranos without turning back to the game. Finally I tuned in again just when Wagner came in.

WHY WHY WHY WHY can't the Mets ever have a closer that just comes in and shuts the damn door?!

I'm cool with the Subway Series. 2 of 3. Won a game we shouldn't have, lost a game we shouldn't have, we beat their closer, they beat our closer. A-Rod looked like a fool.

Let the healing begin.

I think this thread got misplaced here. I was looking for it in the Game Recounts section but only was able to find it with the search button.
