Nady available to pinch-hit.

Nice to see Woodward, the forgotten man, earn a start with his big hit last night.

Gwreck

Cole Hamels, originally scheduled to start for Philly tonight was DLed with a strained shoulder.

Phillies recalled a reliever but it's not clear if he'll make it to the game tonight so they may also be down a reliever.

I have a hangover from drinking to much baseball last night.

Important note: Alay Soler wearing # 59 (rather than the listed 43).

ScarletKnight41
May 24 2006 07:16 PM

Important note - Soler doesn't seem to be all that well acquainted with the strike zone.

Gwreck
May 24 2006 07:19 PM

Also of note is the Heath Bell has been temporarily recalled and according to Howie is "on his way to the park."

Rockin' Doc

Just sat down and read through the IGT. After an understandably shaky start, it sounds like Soler has settled down.

Nice to see that Beltran and Wright continue to swing hot bats. If Floyd can continue to build upon his last few games, the Mets will be that much more dangerous.

Keep the runs coming guys.

TransMonk
May 24 2006 08:57 PM

I like it, he seems to know how to pitch. Better outing than Lima/Gonzo/Maine ever gave.

I can see the light at the end of this SP tunnel if Soler can pitch like this and Hernandez rounds out the rotation.

Neat thing about Soler, at least for me - watching that first inning, it was pretty apparent that he wasn't going to get out of it without giving up some runs, but yet I just had a feeling he was going to settle down. He really has a presence and I'm glad he got the opportunity to show that he can come out of adversity and keep his poise.

I was there tonight (hence my absense in the IGT)
a few (obvious) observations:

1. Soler looked great after the first 3 batters walked, the hits off him were grounders, his stuff was amazing

2. the home plate umpire was terrible, he was squeezing all the pitchers big time.

3. lieber looked like a batting practice pitcher, i'm suprised we didnt score ten runs off of him.

4. woodward must have fallen asleeop as Soler pitched slower than traschel does in the 1st, Delgado bailed Matsui out big time in the 7th.

5. the fans love Wagner despite the rough spots so far.

I thought about that. Seems odd for a 'tribute' considering he's an escapee, although maybe it's to signify the last year of a free Cuba - wasn't Castro's takeover on New Years 59/60?

Yeah, last year of "freedom" is what I meant.

I didn't think Matsui's throw was that offline at all. More that Delgado was anchored in his stretch too early.

Rotblatt
May 25 2006 08:18 AM

I missed all the walks and the errors, and just caught Soler's final K in the bottom of the first. From where I sat, Soler looked solid. I was behind the plate and pretty high up, so I didn't get a good sense as to his breaking stuff, but he was throwing everything on any count and was getting strikes called and a decent number of swings and misses. His fastball topped out at 90, and he worked between 87 & 88 most of the game--a far cry from the promised 91-92 zone that he supposedly worked regularly in.

Still, he induced a lot of ground balls, worked pretty quickly and had a decent move to first. It looks very free and easy when he throws. Frankly, he looks like he could be a workhorse for us. We'll see how he does the second time facing some of his teams, but he looks like a solid back-of-the-rotation guy to me.

A great game to watch in person. When Beltran hit that jack, whooo boy, were we excited! One of those rare moments for me when the outcome was never seriously in doubt. Usually I'm relentlessly pessimistic when watching the Mets, but last night felt different . . . Maybe it was the lack of sleep.

soupcan
May 25 2006 09:37 AM

Was at the game as well. Obnoxious Philly Phans (redundant?) all around me.

As wild as Soler was in the first the crowd seemed to understand that he was prolly nervous and wasn't really riding him so much. More like trying to cheer him on when he did throw a strike. It was kinda nice.

Not like those jerks who boo Beltran.

Fun game to be at.

Reyes is like a freakin' greyhound. Ever seen a greyhound in full stride? They move so fast and their movements are so fluid. Its like they are floating just above the ground when they run.
