The Post has learned that Balbino Fuenmayor, a third baseman from Venezuela, was at Shea yesterday, and Minaya said he is slated to work out for the Mets today.

The GM said Fuenmayor was 16 years old. One major-league team executive said Fuenmayor is a "high-profile player who a lot of teams are on currently."

A lot of teams are on him? That's a funny way of putting it.

Great baseball name.

Backpage headline after his first home run...

THE BALBINO.

Hey Balby, appreciate your coming down but we're all set for third base for the next 20 years, thanks.

That's still a heckuva lot better than Michael Kay's call of a home run by "The Giambino" every time Jason Giambi hits one.

Throwing big bucks at very young but high-ceiling, 'toolsy' Latin teenagers is going to become a hallmark of the Minaya administration I suspect.
The Yanx used this strategy for a spell in the mid/late '90s but have scaled back a bit after finding it a very expensive way of mining for talent.

What are you talking about? By the time David retires he'll be just about ready to come to the majors.

John Sterling actually.
He needed something to replace; 'The BAM-Tino' once the Yanx changed 1st basemen

Nothing worse than a 21 y/o Yanqui fan bragging about "their" 26 championships.

Don't worry. They'll be the first ones to jump off the bandwagon once the Yankees start to decline.

Yep, it is Sterling with that vomiticious line. Another one is "A-Bomb by A-Rod".
Do we need a poll to ask which call is worse? Or is it worth it? After all, its about the Yankees.

Hell, there are probably kids born in Nov. 2000 bragging about their 26 championships.

We're getting away from discussing the impending arrival of Bal-BEEEEEEE-no Foo-en-MAY-or!.

What I know. The guy also plays outfield, at least he did in this game.

That may be his only at-bat of the year with that team.
