Santana is an amazing group and like Elster and his Guns and Roses, I hope that if you are not very familiar with them, you take the time to check them out (the older stuff is best, but his recent reinvention hasn't been bad either, "Smooth" is incredible, but not on my list, because I don't think Supernatural should be eligible for this exercise)

"Evil Ways" vs. "Thunder Road"
BS&tESB in a walk.

"Samba Pa Ti" vs. "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)"
“Samba Pa Ti” should go up against “Thunder Road” as I think they’re two of the first three selections in Nick Hornby’s book about his favorite records. A beautiful song barely trumps an even more beautiful guitar solo. BS&tESB.

"Black Magic Woman" vs. "Badlands"
BS&tESB

"Oye Como Va" vs. "Born to Run"
BS&tESB

"Hope You're Feeling Better" vs. "Brilliant Disguise"
BS&tESB. My bias against acid rock is coming through here. Look hard and look twice

"She's Not There" vs. "Cadillac Ranch"
This is a nice alternative version of “She’s not There.” Not necessarily better than the radio-staple Zombies song, just nice and refreshingly different. “Cadillac Ranch” is a good example of Bruce being over-histrionic. I’m throwing this one to Santana, as I was previously on the fence with "Samba Pa Ti"/"4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" and went with the Brucers.

"Jingo" vs. "Rosalita (Come out Tonight)"
I like the Sexy percussion breaks of Jingo, but the record company gave me a big advance and I have to vote for the E-Streeters. “Rosy” is a tour-de-force and a rock-‘n’-roll fantasy to boot.

"Stormy" vs. "Cover Me"
Adult “Hey, Love” soul vs. keyboard-drenched rawk. I’m taking a pass here. Tie.

"Se A Cabo" vs. "Tunnel of Love"
A fast latin jazz drum orgasm against heavy-metal guitar solo with Carlos’ distinctive tone, “Se a Cabo” is a fantastic roof-blower that’s probably great to see live, but I can’t bring myself to vote against “Tunnel of Love,” which lets pop trump rock, which is everything I was told was wrong when I was young. “Tunnel,” I’ve said it before, contains a wonderful guitar solo that pretty much alone could justify Nils Lofgren’s entire tenure in the E Street Band. Plus the central metaphor of the song is fascinating. BS&tESB.

"Everything's Coming Our Way" vs. "Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street?"
“Everything” is everything Santana is. It’s soul. It’s rock. It’s Ricky Ricardo at the Tropicana. “Does this Bus…” strikes me as over-poetic, Bruce trying too hard to build a reputation as a songwriter — a trait he would soon pull back on just enough. Santana.

Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band take it 7.5-2.5, which is a pretty good showing, from where I stand, for Santana, considering the guitarist that gives them their name had to make up for the band never having an identifiable lead vocalist.

"Evil Ways" vs. "Thunder Road"
--Like ‘em both but only one can win. Bruce

"Samba Pa Ti" vs. "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)"
--That waitress I was seeing lost her desire for me. I spoke to her last night. She said she won’t set myself on fire for me anymore.
Wham, bang Bruce.

"Black Magic Woman" vs. "Badlands"
--Santana

"Oye Como Va" vs. "Born to Run"
--BtR is just too huge. Bruce.

"Hope You're Feeling Better" vs. "Brilliant Disguise"
--What edgy said about acid rock. Yawn. Bruce.

"She's Not There" vs. "Cadillac Ranch"
--Bruce wrote a lot of songs about cars. This is one of them. Bruce

"Jingo" vs. "Rosalita (Come out Tonight)"
--Bruce

"Stormy" vs. "Cover Me"
--I thought this was the weak link in my lineup (which I randomly ordered without regard to the opponent), and it still wins.

"Se A Cabo" vs. "Tunnel of Love"
--CuddleUPmylittleangel, cuppleUPmylittleDOVE. Bruce

"Everything's Coming Our Way" vs. "Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street"
--I like the syncopated rhythms and cat-like guitar, but I gotta go with my bias here and give some love for young Bruce, who brings remarkable energy to a simple, short, little piano piece. “I saw the future of rock and roll and its name is Bruce Springsteen!”

So now we're pretending that Santana is a band when it's actually also the musician by the same name?

Curmudgeon.

Santana is a band. Carlos Santana is a man. Rafael Santana is a shortstop.

Cooby is limiting herself to the period when the band had some more cohesion and staying away from the current "band". Carlos Santana has put out albums under his own name and not under the "band name" of Santana. Those albums wouldn't be allowed. I know, kind of silly, but there you have it.

Santana's original lineup was

Original Lineup (1968 debut):
Carlos Santana (guitar)
Gregg Rolie (keyboards and vocals)
David Brown (bass guitar)
Michael Shrieve (drums)
José "Chepito" Areas (percussion)
Michael Carabello (percussion).

Neil Schon (guitar) joins in 1971 as a teenaged prodigy also recruited by Derek and the Dominoes.

Rolie quits in December of 1971. Supposedly more interested in progressive rock, concept albums, and classical music, while Carlos wanted shorter tracks highlighting Mexican themes. Rolie would instead put aside those high falutin' intentions, and go on to found Journey, and recruit his old fellow Santanista Schon.

They were originally billed as the Santana Blues Band. Like the Steve Miller Band, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, and many other acts that debuted in the Woodstock era, from the late seventies on, the brand name of the band had more integrity than the lineup, and the iconic central figure carried on under that name with multiple lineups. More perhaps than those others, Carlos nonetheless was dedicated to keeping the act as representative as possible of what they originally were, retaining the signature percussion players that tied Santana to idols like Tito Puente.

And, like those others, the later lineup changes are largely neutralized in this contest by the sponsor piicking mostly songs from the earlier era when the band's lineup was concrete and well-known. Measuring the band on a total-historical-members-per-minute-of-released-music basis, they probably don't approach Guns n' Roses' league. Axl just added a new guitarist named Stumblefoot like three weeks ago.

"Evil Ways" vs. "Thunder Road" A great song vs. one of the greatest songs of all time. Little bit unfair. Bruce
"Samba Pa Ti" vs. "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" Bruce
"Black Magic Woman" vs. "Badlands" Another battle of heavies, but it's Badlands. Bruce
"Oye Como Va" vs. "Born to Run" Not much can compete here either. Bruce
"Hope You're Feeling Better" vs. "Brilliant Disguise" Bruce
"She's Not There" vs. "Cadillac Ranch" Bruce, in a much closer matchup.
"Jingo" vs. "Rosalita (Come out Tonight)" Bruce, although I like Jingo quite a bit.
"Stormy" vs. "Cover Me" Bruce, somewhat unexpectedly.
"Se A Cabo" vs. "Tunnel of Love" Bruce, again easily.
"Everything's Coming Our Way" vs. "Does This Bus Stop at 82nd Street" Bruce, benefiting from the matchup.

Hmm, that's a 10-0 for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

Very surprised to hear that Dickshot chose the matchups randomly, as putting Thunder Road, Born to Run and Badlands vs. 3 of the top Santana songs was a very effective (if unintentional) strategy.

I like this Bruce lineup more than before but Cover Me, Cadillac Ranch and Bus Stop are some weak links. Glad to see Badlands in there but I'm still puzzled by the absence of Jungleland or Backstreets.
