What do I need to know?

They're awesome.

I found the product reviews of the various MP3 players and explainations of product features/capabilities of the MP3 buyers guide at CNET.com to be quite helpful.

This is certainly a good start. I figure I'm going to break down and get one, and I since I want it to hold a whole humungous lotta music, probably the 60 gb model. I've read about different products not accepting different formats...if I get an Ipod, will it only accept songs downloaded through iTunes, or any MP3? What I've been reading on CNet and elsewhere seems to indicate the latter. And can I play it through speakers, or just those little ear buttons?

Any of the MP3 players can play though any stereo that has an FM radio (including your car stereo) by simply using a FM transmitter. Cost is only $30 if oredered online from Belkin.com.

can't you just use one of those things that plugs into the earphone jack and has a tape on the other end of the wire? thats how i get my CD player working in the car...

I have a cable I bought at Radio Shack for a couple of bucks that I plug in one end on the headphones and the other on my stereo and can listen to it on the Aux setting.

The thing NYMR mentions works with iPods too.

The thing I like about the FM transmitter is that I can use it with my car stereo, hmoe stereo, portable boom box, or carry it to my friends house and play the MP3 player on his stereo. All I have to do is turn on the FM radio and tune the transmitter to the same signal and the MP3 plays over the stereo speakers. No other cords needed and the transmitter is only a little bigger than a pack of gum. Great versatility and conveniance for a nominal price. I love the damn thing.

Just wanted Mole to know there's other options, I'm sure the transmitter is great and I think I'll get one one day.

I recently purchased a portable radio/i-pod player, which conveniently brings my rock and roll outside with me, and charges I pod while not in use. Wouldn't spring for the $300 Bose (which didn'thave a radio too) so I got a knockoff called I-Luv (sound is eh but I saved 200 bills).

I feel like Homer purchasing a TV "They have Magnetbox... Sorny.. all the good names..."

Some of my friends have questionable musical taste. They start pulling out packs of gum and transmitting their playlists onto my stereo, that could threaten a relationship.

If my brother does it, things'll get ugly.

i love my ipod.

i now carry my entire music collection around with me on my commute, or in the car, or doing errands.

Everybody in the family has their own lists. When my wife and i are alone in the car, we listen to our "combined list". When we have the kids, we listen to their combined list. Its like having a radio station that only plays the songs you like, and never gets interrupted for commercial breaks or station IDs.

Plus, my wife got me the Bose dock for my birthday, which is like having a pretty decent stereo in my living room (my good stereo resides in the den) that takes up almost no space and is considerably cheaper.

i've only bought a few songs to download off of i-tunes, and i still buy CDs ocasionally, because, as convenient as the IPod is, listening to compressed, digitally delivered i-tunes on my Bose speaker (or any other good sound system) exposes the inferior sound quality, relative to a pre-recorded CD, which is much less noticable on my headphones.

You will love it.

I talked to my daughter, who has a 30G. She said she held off for a long time, figuring that why would she possibly want another way of playing her music. Now she can't imagine what she ever did without it.

What do you do it your iPod suddenly stops reconizing iTunes (or vice versa)?

Go to the Apple support page. It's relatively helpful as far as support pages go.
