Mets load the bases with no outs on a hit, an error, and a bunt single.

Delgado up.

Gwreck
May 28 2006 01:12 PM

Carlos...why are you bunting?

OlerudOwned
May 28 2006 01:13 PM

RBI groundout for Delgado, the shift costs Florida a double play.

Shifting w/ the bases loaded seems iffy.

Nady out again. Probably not just a day off after two days off for the back this week. I've got the Florida broadcast. Any word on X?

OlerudOwned
May 28 2006 01:16 PM

Easy out dribbler to Cabrera by Wright.
Cabrera thinks about throwing home, hesitates, goes to first, and Wright beats it out. Oopsidaisy.

2-0 Mets.

I like the sneak bunt there.......as long as it works.
He had the whole third baseline.
(Last year w/o Delgado i wouldnt think that way)

With 0 out, Delgado-Wright-Floyd coming up-
not that bad a play.

Wow--they had Wright dead at third.
.Blew that tag Cabrera

OlerudOwned
May 28 2006 01:19 PM

Off Jacobs glove, base hit.

Wright gets to third on a beautiful heads up slide to counter Cabrera's indifferent tag.

OlerudOwned
May 28 2006 01:20 PM

Valentin with a sac fly.

Throw gets through the cutoff man, and Floyd takes second.

Mets 4, Miami Little League All-Stars 0.

OlerudOwned
May 28 2006 01:23 PM

Lets hope El Duque can throw a ball better than he just chucked that bat.

Zvon
May 28 2006 01:24 PM

Nice 1st inning.

4-0 already.

Nice lil cushion for ElDuke.

Willie on the pregame said he'll be back in the lineup tomorrow. Just the day off.

Thanks, G. Good to hear.

1, 2, 3

Zvon
May 28 2006 01:36 PM

Reyes 2 for 2-
but overslides the bag on that steal.
They pitch out and he woulda been safe--
he beats the throw but he slides past the
bag and is tagged out.

Dubioius stuff on the between innings banter from the Florida booth:

Broadcaster: What's that, Bobby?

Director: Congratulations on Jewish Heritage Day.

Broadcaster: (Snicker...)

OlerudOwned
May 28 2006 01:42 PM

That's classic.
Go Mike Jewcobs!

Gwreck
May 28 2006 01:46 PM

Ha. The giveaway on Jewish Heritage Day in Miami is, naturally, Mike Jacobs t-shirts.

OlerudOwned
May 28 2006 01:47 PM

Oh piss.

Zvon
May 28 2006 01:48 PM

2 walks---
Hermida homers.
A 3 run blast makes it 4-3.

Walks kill I tells ya.

]Ha. The giveaway on Jewish Heritage Day in Miami is, naturally, Mike Jacobs t-shirts.

Jacobs isn't Jewish though, and the t-shirt giveaway and Jewish Heritage Day were two separate attractions sez the Marlins. That same somewhere where I read this bit made it sound like Jacobs was a little upset over the confusion and his teammates were giving him the business over it. Here's a snippet from the Chicago Sun Times:

May 28 is ''Jewish Heritage Day'' for the Florida Marlins, who plan to give Mike Jacobs youth T-shirts to fans. Only one problem: Jacobs isn't Jewish. ''I asked them what their thinking was, but they said that wasn't why,'' Jacobs said. ''I didn't know until I played [for Class A Brooklyn in 2001] that Jacobs was a common Jewish name.''

Edit: Found that quote in the Palm Beach Post:

Jewish Heritage Day: As part of Jewish Heritage Day, the Marlins this afternoon will give away Mike Jacobs T shirts — even though they wrongly assumed that Jacobs is Jewish.

"They said it wasn't done intentionally but I don't know about that,'' Jacobs said. "It's a big joke around here.''

The Duke strikes out the side, which is a lot less exciting when you realize he allowed 3 runs.

Edgy DC
May 28 2006 01:53 PM

That was a 39-pitch inning for our new innings eater.

One big inning to eat.

Gwreck
May 28 2006 01:54 PM

I'd rather that El Duque not have any more 39-pitch innings.

Zvon
May 28 2006 01:58 PM

Wright 6 for last 6.
Man-he ripped that curve ball-he was all over it.
Double.

OlerudOwned
May 28 2006 02:04 PM

Nolasco isn't getting any more corners after that mini-fit.

Valentin with an RBI single!

5-3 Good guys.

Edgy DC
May 28 2006 02:04 PM

Valentin, going from designated whipping boy to guy who gets a green light 3-0.

Awright.

OlerudOwned
May 28 2006 02:07 PM

El Duque lost his undershirt. I hope the liberation lets him pitch better.

And dammit, learn to hang onto the bat.

Zvon
May 28 2006 02:08 PM

Jacobs may have saved a run there for the Fish.
He was NOT gonna take his eyes off Wright until he went back to third.
He almost missed the easy out at 1st starin David down.

Nymr83
May 28 2006 02:12 PM

I know its 5-3 but i'm a bit annoyed so far.

3 runs on 1 hit? i NEVER want to see the sequence "walk, walk, homer" when we're winning by 4 runs. you've gotta give Willingham, if not Cabrera, something to hit with that score.

I also was a bit annoyed that Valentin swung 3-0 (which worked out) and Chavez swung 2-0 (which didnt work out) when Nolasco couldnt find the plate.

A Boy Named Seo
May 28 2006 02:12 PM

Marlins broadcaster, dropping this joke, thinking he's off-air: "The key was, they loaded the raft with SPAM".

Then the broadcaster follows that with a "What?" as someone likely pointed out that his mic was still hot, and then an awkward silence followed.

The raft was loaded with SPAM? This was immediately following El Duque's AB. Wonder what that was about?

Hanley Ramirez was an ex-switch hitter restricted to hitting righty.

If Reyes shows inability to hit consistantly left handed, is this ever considered?

I doubt it, but I think it's an interesting thought.

Nymr83
May 28 2006 02:16 PM

I think when it came out that Hernandez was lying about the raft it became quite approriate to make fun of it...
its like that former blue jays manager (was it Johnson?) who lied about serving in Vietnam, if you're going to lie about shit expect to be made fun of.

OlerudOwned
May 28 2006 02:17 PM

LoDuca throws Fast Hanley out at third.

"Stupid", sez Darling.

Nymr83
May 28 2006 02:18 PM

"Theres being aggresive and i guess theres just being stupid" - Hernandez on Ramirez getting CS just now.

players seem so dumb these days, how the hell can you get thrown out tryig to take 3B with Jacobs and then Cabrera up down by TWO runs?

Zvon
May 28 2006 02:21 PM

They help Hernandez along.
I love it when the other team is stupid.

Zvon
May 28 2006 02:24 PM

Man-Reyes is hittin the ball HARD.
Lines out to right.

LoDuca follows with a single that the Marlins right fielder almost swobodas.

And LoDuke steals second!

OlerudOwned
May 28 2006 02:24 PM

LoDuca takes second! Ha!

You've got Chavez and then Hernandez batting after him, so having Valentin swing 3-0 with RISP is just good sense.

Zvon
May 28 2006 02:26 PM

BELTRAN!

OlerudOwned
May 28 2006 02:27 PM

Carlos Beltran hits baseballs...LONG DISTANCE.

7-3, Metropolitans.

Gwreck
May 28 2006 02:27 PM

Of course, having Beltran swing 3-0 with Delgado and Wright up next...that puzzles me.

But it does result in:

OlerudOwned

Wake up, Reyes.

Misjudged a big hoppin' ball and then makes a very ill-advised throw.

Nymr83
May 28 2006 02:49 PM

The official scorer ruled that a hit and an error allowing the runner to advance....i don't think i've ever seen a worse scoring decision than giving Olivo a hit on a 1-hopper to the SS. MLB should reprimand him.

OlerudOwned
May 28 2006 02:53 PM

Is Petit coming in or was he just throwing for the hell of it?

....or fine that official scorer. ;)

El Duque has a nice 5th.
7 Ks.
Approaching 100 pitches.
How long do we go with him in that heat?

Oh---theres my answer--he's dun.
Kaz to PH.

Is there some sort of new Mets tradition where every new Met pitcher has to give up 3 runs?

MFS62
May 28 2006 03:11 PM

Not a tradition; a rule.
Didn't you get the memo?

Later

Zvon
May 28 2006 03:13 PM

Bell makes a fool out of Olivo.
Ha-that was one nice pitch for the K.

Zvon
May 28 2006 03:20 PM

I just saw the replay on this slide into third by Wright in the first.
This was big.
I didnt realize how this went, but Wright switched his hands at the last second and got in there, fooling Cabrera.
Damn--thats heads up.

TheOldMole
May 28 2006 03:28 PM

Gwreck

Bell stays in, hitting for himself, to pitch a 3rd inning. Interesting.

They hit 8 homers in that game.

A record for the Braves and the most hit by one team in a game in the history of Wrigley Field.

Wacky game goin on there.
