Thunderstorm passed through apparently. Grounds crew now removing the tarp (as of 7 EDT). Probably 15-30 minute delay in the start of the game.

ScarletKnight41
May 29 2006 07:27 PM

They're shooting for a 7:45 start.

Gwreck
May 29 2006 07:42 PM

Found while waiting for the rain delay: the all-time lowest sum total of uniform numbers in a Mets lineup. (August 30, 1962). Dickshot, I'll PM you the details.

ScarletKnight41
May 29 2006 07:43 PM

Julia Stiles is throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. She's a New York native and a Columbia College grad - a lifelong Mets fan.

I'll let one of you guys post the photo of her.

Gwreck
May 29 2006 07:50 PM

This was a pretty well known photo of Stiles (might take a little while to load)

Gwreck
May 29 2006 07:53 PM

Gamecast says that pitch was basically in the dirt. WTF?

ScarletKnight41
May 29 2006 07:53 PM

Eric Byrnes' solo homer gives the D-Backs an early 1-0 lead.

ScarletKnight41
May 29 2006 07:56 PM

A hit and a walk puts Snakes runners on first and second with one out.

ScarletKnight41
May 29 2006 08:30 PM

Valentin's 2-RBI single gives the Mets a 2-1 lead :)

ScarletKnight41
May 29 2006 08:32 PM

X-Man scores on Reyes' ground out. 3-0 Mets!

ScarletKnight41
May 29 2006 08:35 PM

Valentin scores on LoDuca's 2-out double.

And, as Keith says constantly, 2-out RBI's are the toughest <g>

Gwreck
May 29 2006 08:36 PM

There's likely another rain delay coming soon.

ScarletKnight41
May 29 2006 08:39 PM

That time is now - the skies have just opened.

SI Metman
May 29 2006 09:16 PM

rain delay almost over. Tarp is off the field, and the groundscrew is prepping it for play.

Nymr83
May 29 2006 09:25 PM

lets get this one in... might have a long stretch by Oliver tonight after all this rain.

Frayed Knot
May 29 2006 09:28 PM

I've got a local weather station on my cable and the only storms they're showing are the ones going straight thru Central Queens - first one, then the other. It's like they're moving north to south over the Whitestone Bridge and sitting on top of Shea.
I haven't seen a drop.

He's well, rested, having not thrown since the marathon game last Tuesday.

ScarletKnight41
May 29 2006 09:39 PM

Trax gets out of it - on to the bottom of the third.

Edgy DC
May 29 2006 09:45 PM

Hernandez and Soler are getting along swimmingly in the dugout.

Swimmingly? I thought they came by boat or at least used a raft..

ScarletKnight41
May 29 2006 09:53 PM

Crap - a bloop single that should have been caught and a double give the Snakes runners at second and third with no outs in the 4th :(

ScarletKnight41
May 29 2006 09:54 PM

A sac fly scores a run and moves Shawn Green to third with only one out.

Edgy DC
May 29 2006 09:55 PM

That was a heck of a pitch to drive 300 feet for a sacrifice fly.

Edgy DC
May 29 2006 09:57 PM

Ooo, crap throw by Cliff on the wet field. One-run game.

ScarletKnight41
May 29 2006 09:57 PM

Now it's 4-3 on another sac fly (and a poor throw by Cliff), and Vargas doubles with 2 out :(

The Big O

Aw, crap. Knots ahoy courtesy of Eric Byrnes.

Johnny Dickshot
May 29 2006 10:19 PM

BaZooka with the basepath derring-do.

Beltran can pretty much get away with murder while sluging 600+, but you just knew that wuss nonplay on the pop fly was gonna hurt.

Edgy DC
May 29 2006 10:19 PM

What a hook slide by Lo Duca.

The throw beat him by 10 meters.

Edgy DC
May 29 2006 10:21 PM

Does David Wright wipe his nose on the inside of his shirt before every pitch?

Big K gets us the first out. C'mon double play ball...

ScarletKnight41

Understatement of the game.

Gwreck

Alright, no matter, we've got 2-3-4 due up, we can get at least 1 back off their 'pen.

ScarletKnight41

Duaner Sanchez comes in to pitch the 9th with the Mets down by a run.

Johnny Dickshot

We shall rally:

]If you smell the smoke
You don’t need to be told
What you got to do

Yet there’s a certain breed
So very in between
They’d rather take a vote

Running short on time
Still they can’t decide
But we already know
That we are here to go!
We are here to go!
We are here to go!
We are here to go!
We are here to go!

What is really mine
Who’s at the top of the pile
Where does he draw the line?

Let them figure it out
Go on and step across
Just remind yourself
That we are here to go!

When it grows too long
The tail wags the dog
The hand that bites gets fed

Troubled multiply
The crowd begins to cry
For some common sense

Let them all dig in
When the odds are no win
Head for the nearest door
’cause we are here to go!
We are here to go!
We are here to go!
We are here to go!
We are here to go!
Go!

Johnny Dickshot

Gwreck

5.03 ERA for Valverde. Let's add to it.

Or tie-ers!

Johnny Dickshot

Jose Reyes -- Here to go!

Both hits on 2 strikes this inning. This is how closers lose their job

Edgy DC
May 29 2006 11:34 PM

A stolen base and a coupla productive outs and we're home.

I know my Diamondbacks.

Nymr83
May 29 2006 11:37 PM

they WANT Delgado? bwahahaah!

Zvon
May 29 2006 11:38 PM

Intentional walk to Beltran loads the bases with no out in the bottom of the 9th.
I got home just in time ;)

Nymr83
May 29 2006 11:38 PM

if i'm the d-backs i try to K beltran and get the DP from Delgado.

Nymr83

well they K Delgado and thats huge... OF still way in for Wright of course

Gwreck
May 29 2006 11:40 PM

Well, they got Delgado to K.

Doesn't Wright lead the team in walk-off hits this year?

Zvon
May 29 2006 11:40 PM

OUCH!
Delgado Ks.

Now the DP gets em out of it.

COMON DAVID!

Johnny Dickshot
May 29 2006 11:40 PM

Nymr83
May 29 2006 11:41 PM

Surely he does -- he doubled to beat the Braves in the 14th, plus the single against the MFY ... and probably some other really obvious one I can't remember.

I think Howie said that was Heilman's first gopher allowed this year.

Zvon
May 29 2006 11:48 PM

Thats 15 one run wins for the Mets.
Thats the kinda thing a championship team does.
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

i think they have been playing over their head in order to survive the mayhem at the back of the rotation. but with soler and el duque and the returning health of maine and bannister, i think luck should be less of factor.

i really like soler. i am gonna go to the park tomorrow and check him out.

Elster88
May 30 2006 05:18 AM

Is it fair that Heilman, or anyone, is given a blown save for losing the lead in an inning that would not have earned him a save even if he completed it?

Shouldn't it be called a blown hold or something?

Elster88
May 30 2006 05:19 AM

I'd argue that this is not about a team playing over its head. This is about a team that is better than most of the teams it plays. In baseball, that can often equate to one-run wins. It's the nature of the game.

Well it is a save if he successfully complete the game, ergo it's a blown save for not doing so.

That's the problem (just one of many actually) with saves/blown save totals; they only really mean anything when applied to those most strictly fitting the modern closer's role. Set-up guys run the risk of the BS but rarely ever get the chance to complete the save so their S/BS pcts generally suck even when they don't.
