Pedro gets out of it with help by a gold glove play by Valentin - who is really growing on me.

Edgy DC
May 31 2006 07:36 PM

Pedro:

1) Picks up Lo Duca's mask for him after he catches the pop to end the first.
2) Rather than head straight for the dugout after the second, first goes out to congratulate Valentin with a manhug.
3) When he gets to the dugout, waits for Lastings Milledge and gives him an encouraging butt patting.

Zvon
May 31 2006 07:38 PM

Valentins great play bails out Milledge.
How do you miss an easy fly like that?

I read somewhere this week that Beltran has the best stealing % in MLB history. Something like 88%.
I have to wonder what it was before he came to NY.

Delgado gets robbed.
OUCH.

Career vs Mets, through 2 AB today:

8-27 (.296), 4 HR (all solo HR), 5 RBI. Not great, but not bad for a small sample size. Obviously he's kicked our ass this series.

Good interview with Guy Conti. Too bad they missed the fact that Pedro was making a mockery of all things Diamondback.

I mean, yay, as a Met fan, but boo as a ball fan.

Oh, and it's rally time.

Mother told me
Yes, she told me
I'd meet girls like you
She also told me
"Stay away
You'll never know what you'll catch"
Just the other
Day I heard
A soldier falling off
Some Indonesian junk that's going round

Mommy's alright
Daddy's alright
They just seem a little weird
Surrender!
Surrender!
But don't give yourself away!

Father says
Your mother's right
She's really up on things"
"Before we married
Mommy served in
The WACS in the Philippines"
Now, I had heard
The WACS recruited
Old maids for the war
But mommy isn't one of those
I've known her all these years

Mommy's alright
Daddy's alright
They just seem a little weird
Surrender!
Surrender!
But don't give yourself away!

Whatever happened
To all this season's
Losers of the year?

Ev'ry time I
Got to thinking
Where'd they disappear?
When I woke up
Mom and Dad are
Rolling on the couch
Rolling numbers
Rock and rolling
Got my Kiss records out

Mommy's alright
Daddy's alright
They just seem a little weird
Surrender!
Surrender!
But don't give yourself away!

Surrender!
Surrender!
But don't give yourself away!

An' weekends we'd go dancing
Down Streatham on the bus

You always made me laugh
Got me in bad fights
Play me pool all NIGHT!
Smokin menthol...

I practised
Daily in my room
You were down the crowd planning
Your next move
Go on a nicking spree
Hit the wrong guy
Each of you get THREE!
Years in Brixton...

I did my
Very best to write
How was butlins?
Were the screws too tight?
When you lot get out
Were gonna hit the town
Well burn it fuckin DOWN!
To a cinder...

Cos years have passed and things have changed
And I move anyway I wanna go
I'll never forget the feeling I got
When I heard that youd got home
An I'll never forget the smile on my face
'Cos I knew where you would be
A'n if youre in the crown tonight
Have a drink on me
But go easy...

Two suggested answers to that:

First, starting pitchers stayed in longer back then, and relief pitchers were often asked to go three innings or even more. So, like the Mets tonight, you could go quite a few innings without getting deep into your bullpen. Whereas the norm now is what Arizona did tonight--six pitchers in 12 1/3 innings.

And second, there were fewer runs scored then. If neither team can score, the game can go on an awfully long time.

About Lastings' throw.
The announcers said that "he missed the cutoff man".
From what I saw, it was low enough to be cut off and was obviously right on line to the bag.
Its the job of the player who would receive the throw and tag the runner to yell "cut" if he thinks the throw won't get the runner. That must have happened on this play. (Unless of course, Wright was so awed by the throw that he was rendered speechless)

Later

Edgy DC
Jun 01 2006 10:43 AM

Green looked out to me.

It's always hard to tell when the tag is there but the player get his arm around. I know wishful thinking always makes me see the Met player get his arm in there (like on Beltran's steal earlier) and the enemies not, but I think he was nailed. He certainly didn't argue.

soupcan
Jun 01 2006 10:46 AM

It's not often that an IGT reaches the 8th inning on the first page, then continues on for another 5.

Did you guys hear Keith talking about how fast the game was going? He was practically giddy.

Frayed Knot
Jun 01 2006 01:06 PM

"Green was safe on that play. Metsies got lucky."

It was sort of a weird tag: wrist to ankle rather than glove to foot; which moved it from close to realfuckingclose - but the defense will get that call most of the time.

"About Lastings' throw"

It had a wee bit of an arc to it and looked probably too high to cut. But it was low enough to where it wasn't obviously un-cuttable so the batter/runner prolly wouldn't advance anyway.
Very nice - though short of outstanding - throw.

"Did you guys hear Keith talking about how fast the game was going? He was practically giddy."

He hates it when these silly games interrupt cocktail hour.

Frayed Knot
Jun 01 2006 11:21 PM

One more thing on this game:
It may not have mattered, but nice heads up play by Valentin to move from 2nd to 3rd on Castro's grounder. Normally the rule is to go if the ball is hit to the runner's left and stay if it's to his right. This one was several strides to his right but chopped slowly enough that Valentin's correct read of it gave him plently of time to get there.

Of course as it turned out he scores either way because N.D.'s ball scooted up the gap but maybe they pitch him differently if that run's still on 2nd. Big difference between having the winning run on 3rd as opposed to on 2nd with only 1 out.
