Greg Maddux

Any thoughts on the Mets picking him up at the trade deadline, with the Cubs 12.5 games out I would think he would be available, he'd be a great fit for the Mets, slot him in behind Pedro and Glavine, plus I doubt he would cost much in prospects.

Works for me.

Omar?

didn't he originally sign as a FA with Atlanta because he didn't want to play in NY? Or did i dream that?

anyway, i'd take him in a heartbeat. Maddux at 75% of his former glory is better than trax at 100%.

You remember correctly, Vic. Yankees were dangling big money to get him to leave the Cubs and he went to Atlanta for "family reasons." 'Course those kids could be grown up now and he might want to re-unite with his old golfing buddy, Tom. It'd be weird to see him at Shea but I'd do it.

Maybe the Glavine factor would helpful too?

If the cost wasn't too high, sure, why not? If he doesn't retire, he'd probably sign with the Cubs again next year anyway.

Maddux has been losing a lot lately, lost four in a row but won last night, only thing I don't like is that he has gone 7+ innings only twice this season.

well, if they're going to insist on keeping Heilman in the pen, then i'm ok with a 6-inning starter.

Maddux sounds good to me. He should have a few more wins on the season. He's had his bullpen blow up on him a few times.

What gets it done? I'm assuming Bannister and Diaz aren't enough.

Vic Sage

why not?

Maddux is an old and expensive 6-inning pitcher, on a team out of the running. I don't know that he'd command better than 2 AAAA guys who are both relatively young and have had some success on the major-league level.

Can you trade a guy on the DL (Bannister just moved to the 60 day btw)?

I don't know about that soupcan but Bannister can come off the DL on June 26th.

You can if you make him a Player-to-be-named-later

Because he's old, slow and white.

Hey if this did happen the Mets would have a gold glove pitcher, the first since Darling?

Hampton won, but after he left the Mets.

Seeing as how those awards seem pre-determined you're probably right.
Maddux would have to make about 18 errors between now and September not to win it.

True. But at this point Maddux is at about 50% of his former self.

Wouldn't seeing Maddux and Glavine win a title in Mets unis kinda be like us seeing Gooden & Straw win titles as MFYs? If there were any Braves fans down there, it'd blow their minds.

Maddux, Glavine, Pedro and El Duque? Wow, 1999 is going to be great year for the Mets! If only we had held onto Lima! </bad joke>

Damn. If only we had 1999 Roberto Alomar, 1999 Mo Vaughn, 1999 Kevin Appier and 1999 Jeff D'Amico we'd really kick ass!

I wonder if the fans of the teams with the present-day Piazza, Alfonzo, Benitez and any other still-active 1999 Mets say the same thing.

Ask anyone from Atlanta and they'll tell you that Braves fans don't give a crap about the Mets. Why should they? We've never been a legitimate threat to them.

From ESPN insider...

]

L.A. story?
Jun 1 - Dodgers GM Ned Colletti is expected to explore acquiring a veteran starter by the July 31 trading deadline, and Greg Maddux is a possibility, the Los Angeles Times reports.

According to the Daily Herald, Maddux is owed $6 million for the rest of this season, which could stall a deal, but if the Cubs have any heart at all they'll find a way to get him out of Chicago.

Of course Brave fans don't give a crap about the Braves! Don't even sell out Divisional Round playoff games!
