Good topic!

1) The best hitting pitcher. Gooden
2) The best hitting pitcher who nonetheless didn't look good up there. Sid Fernandez (my memory tells me he could hit a little, but my memory is often crappy)
3) The worst hitting pitcher. Leiter (my memory knows he couldn't hit at all)
4) The worst hitting pitcher who nonetheless looked like he should be able to handle himself up there. Jeff D'Amico (looked intimidating on the mound and at the dish, but wasn't as scary once he started actually playing)
5) The best bunting pitcher. Glavine
6) The worst bunting pitcher. Frank Viola?
7) The best hitting relief pitcher. Darren Oliver

Without checking numbers, who in Mets history do you think of as...

1) The best hitting pitcher. Hampton, Doc a strong second but a fair distance behind
2) The best hitting pitcher who nonetheless didn't look good up there. Sid
3) The worst hitting pitcher. Leiter
4) The worst hitting pitcher who nonetheless looked like he should be able to handle himself up there. Can't think of one
5) The best bunting pitcher. Glavine
6) The worst bunting pitcher. Leiter
7) The best hitting relief pitcher. Gotta go Oliver
8) The slugging guy who didn't hit much but was a threat to connect for a homer. Kingman Or is this pitchers too? Hampton was the only power threat that I can think of, but the "who didn't hit much" part doesn't apply to him.
9) The best baserunning pitcher. I've never really thought of this before. Could Doc run?
10) The pitcher who you thought was a better hitter than a pitcher. Another chance to make fun of Zambrano

Can't quibble with most of the others named.
But I'd vote for Al Jackson for best bunting pitcher and best baserunning pitcher.

And as for worst hitting pitcher who nonetheless looked like he should be able to handle himself up there, my vote goes to Roger Craig. Why? Because the fucker looked like he didn't have his heart into helping himself with the bat (hitting or bunting). He looked like he wanted to just wave weakly at three pitches and sit his fat arse down in the dugout.

You cannot overestimate how much I disliked Craig among all the original Mets because he didn't hustle.

2) The best hitting pitcher who nonetheless didn't look good up there. Sid is correct.
3) The worst hitting pitcher. Al Leiter is obvious, but probably true.
4) The worst hitting pitcher who nonetheless looked like he should be able to handle himself up there. I've got nothing. Pedro?
5) The best bunting pitcher. Glavine is a good answer.
6) The worst bunting pitcher. D'Amico jumps to mind. Don't know why.
7) The best hitting relief pitcher. Jesse Orosco.
8) The slugging guy who didn't hit much but was a threat to connect for a homer. Walt Terrell.
9) The best baserunning pitcher. Ron Darling.

I thought of Pedro but changed my mind because he looks silly with his helmet on.

="Edgy DC"]7) The best hitting relief pitcher. Jesse Orosco.

I woulda gone with him too until Oliver.

9) The best baserunning pitcher. Ron Darling.

For some reason I was thinking of Doc. But I don't know why.

They both pinch-ran for Rusty Staub, but Darling was always Davey's first choice. Gooden pinch-ran when Darling was pitching.

Best-hitting relief pitcher has to be Mahomes.

And the worst-hitting pitcher who looked good up there might be Gooden--he wasn't terrible, and he had some pop, but he looked much better than he was.

Yankee-Met on-the-fencers watched Game Seven of the 1986 World Series with me, and snickered when Jesse Orosco came to the plate and I said he actually could hit. RBI hit for Jesse, last laugh for me.

Oliver has started in two thirds of his appearances, so I don't really count him as a reliever in the same sense.

Are there correct answers to these Q's?

Edgy DC
Jun 05 2006 10:14 AM

No, but after a modest period, we should examine how credible our answers were with the help of the UMDB.

MFS62
Jun 05 2006 10:30 AM

How do you verify "best baserunning pitcher" with the help of the UMDB?

Seems I'm the only one who voted for Al Jackson?
Come on, some of you oldtimers who remember Al. Help me out here.

Not that this will really answer 62's question but I'm curious: UMDB question: Have any pitchers recorded stolen bases?

Edgy DC
Jun 05 2006 11:23 AM

Sure. More than a few. Seo had one in 2004, I recall.

I didn't say that UMDB could "verify" anything. I said it cold help us see which answers are more credible than others. Who looked good or bad at the plate is hard to quantify.

RealityChuck
Jun 05 2006 11:27 AM

If you define pitcher as "someone who pitched in the major leagues," then Ty Cobb had 852.

But a pitcher stealing a base happens from time to time. It looks like the last Met pitcher to record a stolen base is Jae Seo in 2004.

Sid Fernandez got one in 1986. Tom Seaver had one 1969 and a total of four in his career (all with the Mets). That looks like the lifetime record of steals by a Mets pitch, and Seaver's two steals in 1967 is the season record.

I don't know the circumstances, of course, but most likely it would have been a delayed double steal: the pitcher stole second to draw a throw, but the catcher let him so the guy on third wouldn't score.

Jun 05 2006 11:33 AM

Darling had one in '85. I remember him saying that there is nothing that bums a pitcher out more than the opposing pitcher stealing a base on him.

I also seem to remember Orel Hershiser stealing a base while a Met.

Exactly. I don't know where he fits in -- seeing as he had no hits for the Mets -- but Braden Looper was a pretty good hitter, IIRC.
