Interesting Fact About the Allman Brothers: Early bands featuring Greg and Duan Allman included The Escorts, Allman Joys, and Hour Glass. After two Hour Glass albums failed, they realized that you can't not make great southern music if you back yourself with guys named Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks, and Berry Oakley.
Interesting Fact About Santana: Many bands grow their rhythm section as they get older, as their sound gets more sophisticated, their budget bigger, and their drummer less agile. Santana had that scene going on right from the beginning, with their debut album featuring a guitarist, a bassist, a singer/keyboardist, a drummer, and two percussionists. Drummer Michael Shrieve was 20 and Carlos Santana 22 when they played Woodstock.

I'm going to like this, because they're two bands that were largely contemporaries, and both were blues bands that drew from exotic sources to become much much more, and I guess both were bands I associate with lots and lots of weed.

So it's a pretty pure matchup. They probably both have members that married Cher at one time or another. On the other hand, it's pretty unambitious to make one's intitial challenge against the 50th out of 51 bands, isn't it?

Jun 01 2006 09:06 PM

Ah, but Santana is so much more than a #50 band...

Edgy DC
Jun 01 2006 09:09 PM

Agreed, they're only down there because they went after a top-fiver on their first throw.

Which is why the Allmans could have more easily gotten past Santana by challenging some stooge act ten or fifteen slots over Santana's heads.

Which of course would mean one of my bands, so I'll shut up now.

Actually, Carlos and I entertained thoughts of taking on Paul and the boys, kinda going for broke. But he whispered "Bruce" in my ear one too many times. We're both still stunned.

"Hot 'Lanta (live at Fillmore East)" vs. "Evil Ways" SANTANA. Where's "Statesboro Blues" when you need it?
"Midnight Rider" vs. "Samba Pa Ti" SANTANA. Like both of these but that achingly beautiful guitar solo wins it.
"Melissa" vs. "Black Magic Woman" SANTANA
"Jessica" vs. "Oye Como Va" SANTANA
"One Way Out" vs. "Hope You're Feeling Better" SANTANA
"Blue Sky" vs. "She's Not There" ALLMANS

"Ramblin' Man" vs. "Stormy" tie. SANTANA. Dickie Betts should shut up and play his guitar.
"Whipping Post" vs. "Se A Cabo" ALLMANS
"In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" vs. "Everything's Coming Our Way" ALLMANS. Good matchup, like both of these.

]"Ramblin' Man" vs. "Stormy" tie. SANTANA.

Which is it? A tie or a win for St. Anne?

sharpie
Jun 02 2006 09:43 AM

Oops. I originally had it as a tie and then changed it to a slight edge for Santana. I don't like either of these options very much but I do understand that Ramblin' Man has to be in there for the Allmans.

Great matchup:

"Hot 'Lanta (live at Fillmore East)" vs. "Evil Ways" -- ABB, since it uses more than two chords.
"Midnight Rider" vs. "Samba Pa Ti" -- ABB
"Melissa" vs. "Black Magic Woman" -- Santana
"Jessica" vs. "Oye Como Va" -- Santana against the ABB's worst song.
"One Way Out" vs. "Hope You're Feeling Better" -- ABB
"Blue Sky" vs. "She's Not There" -- tie
"Revival" vs. "Jingo" -- tie
"Ramblin' Man" vs. "Stormy" -- tie
"Whipping Post" vs. "Se A Cabo" -- ABB
"In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" vs. "Everything's Coming Our Way" -- ABB's best wins that one.

6.5-3.5 ABB. ABB has the edge due to songs with Duane.

Not enthusiastic about either group here. I know they’re good and all but neither serves my cuppa tea.

Hot 'Lanta (live at Fillmore East)" vs. "Evil Ways"
--Long jammy blues numbers: I just never got into ‘em. Santana.

"Midnight Rider" vs. "Samba Pa Ti"
--Brothers

"Melissa" vs. "Black Magic Woman"
--Santana. Like the tension

"Jessica" vs. "Oye Como Va"
--The piano solo is great fun. Allmans.

"One Way Out" vs. "Hope You're Feeling Better"
--Allmans.

"Blue Sky" vs. "She's Not There"
-- Tie, I guess

"Revival" vs. "Jingo"
-- Santana

"Ramblin' Man" vs. "Stormy"
-- Easy win for the Brothers

"Whipping Post" vs. "Se A Cabo"
--Tie

"In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" vs. "Everything's Coming Our Way"
--Eh. Allmans.

Allman Bros. 6, Santana 4

Hot 'Lanta (live at Fillmore East)" vs. "Evil Ways"
Long slow blues, eh. Grab my booty or get out of my way. Santana.

"Midnight Rider" vs. "Samba Pa Ti"
“And the roooooad goes on forever.” That line sums up rock from 1971-1977. I guess that’s a good a tie-breaker for these two closely-matched groovy little songs. Allman Brothers.

"Melissa" vs. "Black Magic Woman"
Delicate slide guitar and original composer status throws another close one to the Allman Brothers.

"Jessica" vs. "Oye Como Va"
Santana. wins by virtue of better lyrics.

"One Way Out" vs. "Hope You're Feeling Better"
Two American bands sounding British. The first sounds like a Cream B-side. The second sounds like a Cream A-side. That doesn’t make either better. Tie.

"Blue Sky" vs. "She's Not There"
I’ll go Allman Brothers here. “Turn your love my way,” is another pretty iconic seventies lyric.

"Revival" vs. "Jingo"
Both keyboardy songs. Revival is too acidic. I’ll go with the proto Latin dicsotequa sound of Santana here, but neither move me.

"Ramblin' Man" vs. "Stormy"
“RM” is played out, but “Stormy” is just too Sade for my taste, it builds toward a climax it doesn’t provide. Allman Brothers.

"Whipping Post" vs. "Se A Cabo"
Passionate 6/8 blues of “WP” loses out here to a pretty fantastic start/stop/stab retreat solo by Carlos. Santananana.

"In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" vs. "Everything's Coming Our Way"
Dueling guitar heroes here. “Everything” is, well, everything. It’s Santana’s greatest hits in a single track.

Which squeezes this one out for Santana, 5.5-4.5.

Yes, since we all know that Cream invented the blues. Elmore James and Sonny Boy Williamson just ripped them off.

Do you think that's what I mean?

I play a riff and ask Ms. Edgy, "Who do you think this band is?"

"I don't know them."

"Who do you think they are?"

"I don't know. Some sixties band. British?"
