Garciaparra looking like his old self.

Nomar and Carlos recalling ol' AL East days.

Wow. Soler got thru the first inning unscathed.

Chances of me staying up till the end of this are... remote

Cool low camera angle on the Dodger broadcast from about 15 degrees to the first base side of the plate.

Did I miss a kaBoom?
Woe is me :(

Wow-I missed TWO!

Nice K by Soler to end the inning after given up a double to Martin down the third base line.

Edgy DC
Jun 05 2006 10:53 PM

Drew caught it, but it's cool to see Wright go the other way with power again.

...and its kool to see Delgado swinging a good bat again.

2 for 2 with the single that inning.

Edgy DC

Does Soler have a windup or does he always pitch from the stretch?

I believe that was Alay Soler's first big league hit -- for real, this time -- after it was taken away last game on that hit-changed-to-error scoring decision.

Edgy DC
Jun 05 2006 11:06 PM

First big-league hit for Soler.

Zvon

Soler with his 1st hit in the big leagues!

Rockin' Doc

Through four complete, the Mets lead the Dodgers 3-0.

So far, so good for Soler. With the big bats due up in the 5th, it would be nice to add to the lead here.

damn walks.
get lofton!

Nymr83

Soler k's Lofton looking with 2 om to end the threat, it remains 3-0 Mets.

And Lofton was not a happy camper.

Cliffy hits!
Delgado and Floyd swingin a good bat-
this would be a good time for them to step up and carry a bit of the load for awhile.

And I like our new second baseman-he singles Cliff to third.

Zvon

The rook comes thru with an RBI single.
He runs straight to 1st and doesnt slap anyone five.

Reyes NOT happy to have struck out.

Gwreck
Jun 05 2006 11:50 PM

Apparently the ump was walking towards Reyes as they exchanged words after the K. Not a good idea.

This is why people hate umpires. Plant your ass back behind the plate Vanover.

Exactly!
Why should that ump follow Reyes?
I dont care what Jose is sayin--if he's not in the umps face he should not recognize it.
Simple as that.

And Reyes, dont get tossed over a pitch that may have been a strike after that pitch you tried to swing at earlier in the at bat :\

FUCK. i wanted the shutout

Edgy DC
Jun 06 2006 12:05 AM

Wow, perfect throw with no extra movement by the catcher and Beltran steals it anyhow.

Edgy DC
Jun 06 2006 12:08 AM

This lefty throws pretty hard for somebody who has had two TJ surgeries.

At that point, I 'd think he'd be running out of connecting tissue to donate to his arm.

Zvon

="Edgy DC"]Wow, perfect throw with no extra movement by the catcher and Beltran steals it anyhow.

And he looks to steal third too, but thinks better of it.
Beltran does that alot.
Whats the point of takin 3rd in that situation?

A shutout would have been nice for Soler, but Ill settle for a win for the guy.

Edgy DC

Scully hasn't been well-briefed.

He thinks Cliff's low batting average is from a deep current slump.

He thinks Julio is still in the Met pen.

Zvon
Jun 06 2006 12:17 AM

Nice play by Reyes and Soler has 7 Ks in 7 innings.
:)

Nymr83
Jun 06 2006 12:17 AM

i swear if anyone blows Soler's win this time i'll make them my new Designated Bullpen Scapegoattm, i haven't had one since Julio left.

He does tv work alone. That's still way impressive.

Scapegoating is pointless and ugly. Please don't.

game over. Willie saves the bullpen as Bradford gets the save.

Zvon
Jun 06 2006 12:50 AM

Great job by Bradford too. He bails out Feliciano and pitches a perfect 9th for the save.
Im really surprised Wags wasnt used.

Mets start the road t rip on a good note.
Soler gets the win!

Edgy DC
Jun 06 2006 12:50 AM

Good move to stay with him. He got out of the eighth on (I think) one pitch, and the Dodgers had no lefthanded hitters left on the bench.

Winning the first game of a west coast swing after getting no day off for travel is pretty cool. The Dodgers just finished up with the Phillies at home and were sittting tight and waiting for the Mets.

Big day for the Dodgers. For the present, they've lost three in a row and four out of five to NL East contenders, and are trying to hang in there in the race with a team that's hard to identify. For the future, they've got picks number 7, 26, and 31 after having no first-rounders last year and failing to sign their second-rounder.

I have a different POV, Edgy.
The true Dodger 16s were Medwick, Mungo and Hermann.
The rest played in LA.

watching the game last night (here in LA), vin scully got on LM for the home run high five parade - they even showed it.
he sounded pretty annoyed
but he did frame it from the view point of a Dodger fan.

Half of you loves Willie for his sound independence and his independent soundness, half of you hates his inability to articulate why reporters are barking up the wrong tree.

In fairness, it's not like Bobby Valentine was ever able to talk a reporter straight.

Randolph catching heat
Wednesday, June 07, 2006
LOS ANGELES -- The Mets won here Monday night, 4-1, with Chad Bradford -- and not Billy Wagner -- getting the game's final four outs. And, for the life of him, Willie Randolph couldn't understand why he was still being asked about it yesterday afternoon.

"That was (Monday)," the Mets manager said. "We won the game. We won the game. The game is over. Isn't everything else irrelevant, unless it's about a story?"

Of course, it's about a story, it was explained to Randolph by reporters. The Mets went out and spent $43 million over the winter on Wagner to close games like Monday night's.

After a touch-and-go eighth inning when Bradford worked out of a two-on, two-out jam created by Pedro Felciano, Wagner was warmed and ready in the bullpen as Bradford mowed down the Dodgers in the ninth. Afterward, the lefty wasn't too happy about being asked to warm up and not used.

"When your mentality is winning, you do what it takes to win the game," Randolph said. "It's not about personal goals for anyone. He's my closer and I want him to get as many saves as he can get. That's fine, just like you want guys to get home runs, base hits, whatever, OK. I'm not thinking about one inning, one play. ...

"I'm not trying to follow any shape or form. I'm not trying to be like anybody. I'm just trying to go by what I know about baseball and my team. I never believe in conforming to any type of tradition or standard of doing things. ... I understand what a save means. I understand that players like saves, closers like saves. But I like wins.

"What's unconventional about it? Unconventional in that you buy into the whole theory that if a save situation comes up (Wagner) has to have that? I don't come from that. I come from winning. Winning the game. That's all I come from. I let my guys have their stats and everything but that means nothing to me."
