Am I Too Quintessential a Mets Fan?

TheOldMole

Is this season starting to feel too easy? Anybody kind of feel they'd be more comfortable if there were a 9 game losing streak or an inexplicable team-wide batting slump, or a really dumb trade? Could someone at least start throwing to the wrong base, so I can feel more like a Mets fan?

Stop it, stop it, stop it, stop it!

We get one of these seasons so infrequently. Do not jinx it. Enjoy it.

Patience! We're not even to the All-Star Break yet.

This is a good team and a fun team.

I'm enjoying the ride.

I'm enjoying this season immensely. I only wish that I had the opportunity to actually see them more frequently. This season is a type of reward for sticking with the team through all the lean times when nothing seemed to go right. I feel no guilt over the Mets change of fortunes.

It's not like this team hasn't had to deal with some adversity. Beltran missed significant time early in the season. Until fairly recently, Floyd couldn't find his way off the interstate without a map and GPS. Bannister went down and the team had to turn to Jose Lima to fill a rotation spot. If starting Jose Lima isn't a miserable adversity for a team to overcome, then I'm not sure what is. Billy Wagner had some early season melt downs that demonstrated that Armando Benitez isn't the only closer that coughs up leads from time to time. Xavier Nady is on the DL following an appendectomy. This team just has more talent than those of recent vintage which allows it to better cover up the deficiencies and injuries.

Nope, I don't feel any guilt at all. I just pray that their solid play continues.

emphasis added. if/when wagner gets shitted on against the braves 2 straight weekends in september or blows a world series game against the MFYs he'll be just as big a goat.

this season has been great so far, dont jinx it.

I don't anticipate anything either. But when things start to go bad I fear the worst.

I have a whole list of stuff that worries me about this team, but damned if
I'm gonna dwell on 'em today with both the Phils and Braves losing again
and Pedro on the hill for the sweep.

agreed, i'll save my worrying for when we're not on pace to make the playoffs.

I have to admit that, being a team that in most recent years considered its main objective to reach or stay around (hopefully over) .500, that this is feeling a little out of place for me.

But I'll adjust.
Im gonna eat this up like cherry pie.
Savor it like fine wine.
Enjoy every damned minute of it.

Still alotta season left and still many things could go wrong.
No jinx here-thats just the way baseball is.
So enjoy it and always look on the bright side.

] words and music by Eric Idle

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

If life seems jolly rotten
There's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps
Don't be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing.

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...

For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.

So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath

Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

And always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the right side of life...
(Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the bright side of life...
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life...
(I mean - what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing - you're going back to nothing.
What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life...

Don't even think about this "too easy" stuff.
Not ever - and certainly not with 100 games to go.

Just as an example: yes, this is the Braves worst 62-game start during their run ... but just barely
* They are - well now were - 29-33 and tied for 3rd place.
* Just two years back (2004) they were 30-32 and in 3rd place ... before going on to win 96 and running away from the division by 10 games (that's a 66-34 pace for the remainder of the season)
* They've also been in 4th place at this point in the season

Remember, you're never as good as you look when you're wi ... yadda, yadda, yadda

I hope everyone realizes I was kidding.

You think you have troubles -- think of my daughter, who had an offer of tickets to Sunday's game with the D-Backs, but decided not to spring for the flight from Santa Fe to Phoenix, and is now kicking herself.

Benjamin Grimm

Sunday's game wasn't the most fun kind of game to attend. I would have been more upset at missing Saturday.

Mole, you're a typical one.

All Mets fans can spell quintessential.

Yankee fans can't.

The only complaint I have that is related is that pennant races are fun when you win.

'Course, then we'd have to deal with the possibility of not making the playoffs. I'll take it as is.

Benjamin Grimm

There's still likely to be a race.

The Mets will have a slump. Even a losing streak. And the Phillies and Braves will have some hot streaks too.

I think the lead is more likely to tighten than expand.

I don't think this is going to be 1986 all over again.

Elster88
Jun 12 2006 07:50 AM

Of course.

I was trying to connect to Mole's original question though, so my point was more that....given the option, I'd prefer the easy way...which is unusual for a Met fan.

'86? Not necessarily. But my prediction at this point is that

a. The Mets will hold first place for the remainder of the season
b. The race won't be all that close.

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 12 2006 06:03 PM

I think A may be true. Not convinced yet of B.

I've been thinking about this. I don't think that the division race will be close again. Just a feeling.
