Trades and such

This is my first-ever fantasy league, and I have a couple of questions for the league in general and for experienced fantasy players in particular, mostly about trading.
I've noticed that a pretty high percentage of trades I've requested (all but one, if memory serves) have been denied. Naturally, we're all allowed to keep whoever we want and trade or not trade as we see fit, but on nearly all of these proposed trades, I've spent a fair bit of time determining who needs what I what I have and has what I need and making a point of proposing trades that seem to me like they should help both parties (otherwise, why would you trade with me?).
I've also noticed that most of the trades proposed to me seem to have no such balance in mind (thanks for all the offers of part-time, washed up outfielders in exchange for Tony Armas and Jason Schmidt though, guys).
Furthermore, I've noticed that a number of people in the league seem not to be playing anymore. Trade requests go unresponded-to for weeks, etc.
So, the questions:
People who've offered me trades (especially lately): Really? Are you serious? Is there something I'm missing here?

People who've gotten trade offers from me (especially lately) and declined: Do you all just like the players in question, was my offer not as fair as I might have thought, or is there some other reason you're standing pat?

People who've gotten trade offers and not responded: Are you still playing? Are you just thinking it over? Do you not have time/inclination to check to see if you've been offered a trade? Is this an actual strategy? I missed out on one trade that I would have made because I had already offered one of the key players to someone else (who ultimately never responded to the trade request).

Everyone: when you evaluate a trade proposal, do you just look at O-Rank and/or Rank, or do you look for particular stats or is there something else that I'm missing here entirely?

People who've done this before: Is it common in fantasy leagues for lousy trades to be proposed? So far, I've only made one trade where I felt like I got hosed immediately after it went through, and I hope to make it my last. It does make me very disinclined to trade with that person again, though.

Finally, how many people are still playing? I'm having a lot of fun thus far, and it's helping keep me involved in baseball on a league level instead of only paying attention to the Mets. Are you?

i'm still playing but its tough to trade when my best player is on the DL and my entire pitching staff sucks.

You said you needed outfielders. I didn't think Bernie for Armas would fly, but Armas isn't worth any of my other OFs. That's what trading is all about, you try to find the best deal for yourself.

Not trying to single you out, OO; that wasn't even the worst offer I got after I said I needed outfielders and had pitchers.

I've made all the same observations you have, will. I think it's natural that what you think is a fair offer will look pricey to somebody else, and vice versa. It's not always easy to figure out how everybody else values other players, especially the younger guys, plus I'm sure we all follow our own team's players more closely than we do the rest of the league (excluding Mets, obviously). People also tend to look to buy low, and grab guys when they think their value is down. I've gotten several offers for Mike Young, for example. None looked particularly good to me, but I look to buy low too so I don't take it personally.

A lot of times I'll throw something out just to get a sense of a person's interest in dealing or acquiring a particular player; if they counter-offer, I know I'm warm. I've haggled with a few people, which is fun even if nothing comes of it.

Yes, I do get the sense that some people don't follow along that closely (or in the case of Valadius, at all). But most people check in at least once a week. I have a pretty good idea at this point of who'll respond quickly and who won't.

(PS the overwhelming majority of my trade offers have been rejected. Some of which -- i.e., potential deals several weeks ago that involved Ichiro or Liriano -- I am quite happy were rejected.)

I look at offers based on needs; I'm near the bottom as far as average goes and at the top for RBIs; but if you offer me a low-average / high power/RBI guy for somebody who has a decent average and a lot of RBIs, I'm not interested regardless of overall rank.

Same goes with FA moves; I lowered my ERA from 5.08 to 4.48 over the last month or so by carefully making moves, while still keeping the league lead in Wins, although the pace slowed down, slightly.

willpie, i rejected your most recent offer as i have no interest in the pitcher you offered me, though it wasnt really a bad offer just not one i felt would help me.

whoever offered me something for Figgins needs to wake up, why would i trade my only steals guy right now?

Ill usually give a pretty detailed explanation when I reject a trade.

Indeed, Zvon. I really appreciated that. Although, come to think of it, I didn't extend the same courtesy to anyone else.

Is Valadius still playing? That's a silly question, because he clearly isn't (doesn't seem to be around here anymore, either; did I miss something?). It's getting a little frustrating to have so many good players tied up in the hands of someone who clearly doesn't give a shit about the league. Is there a way to disband his team and have a draft for his players, or is that just the way it goes?
Does this happen a lot in fantasy leagues? What do you usually do when it happens?

Sure, no small part of my motivation for asking is the fact that I find it really sucky getting my ass kicked by someone who isn't even playing. But it doesn't really seem fair for someone so disengaged to bring the rest of us down. Am I being greedy here, or is this making sense to some of you, too?

if you click "managers" you'll see the last date on which every owner "did something" (this definetaly includes making a trade or transaction, it might include changing your lineup though i'm not sure)
i checked it a few days ago and everyone but Valadius has done something in the month of June. Val hasn't checked it since before the season started, but i think he's the only one.

sorry there is no way to disband teams, not that we'd do it anyway.

you are 100% right about everything you said, but how were we to know who wouldn't participate?
next year he obviously won't be invited back, i'm not saying we'll start being "transaction police" and kicking out those who rarely do anything, but someone who doesnt look at their team at all during the course of the season is obviously not coming back.

Val hasnt shown any activity whatsoever sinc Feb 6th.
What day was the draft?
Its possible that that may have been the last time he looked in.
This perplexes me too, because if a manager decides to draft a team, and the let it run the length of the season with no maintence, this is certainly an option. Hes got his horses--let em run.let fate take its course.

If you remember, he not only reached 1st place for a time but also rode up there for awhile, not too long ago.

I do see Val logged in on yahoo messenger from time to time, so i assume this means he still spends time at his PC.
It simply would be nice if he checked in so we know he is playing and this is the way he want to conduct his team. And i have no problem with that.

if not-his team can be dispanded-I have seen this done in another league.
I cant recall the specifics, but i do believe the team manager dispanding had to be involved and the team could not be simply taken out from under him.
I will look into this--and my recollections may be off or wrong--but i do know I have been involved with a similar situation that was resolved by the splitting up of a team, and a draft for that teams players.

i was once in a league where i had a serious dispute with the administrator that turned personal. So i just dropped all the players on my team, basically creating a new draft for my dropped players.

if anyone did that i'd obviously lock them from making transactions and put all the players back on their team, nobody is allowed to ruin the league for everyone else.

suprise suprise, Valadius just made a transaction, dropping Ayala (who has been out for the year since before the season started, being the only "example" of a guy getting hurt in the world basebal classic) for Loiaza.

You sure you dont want to pound out a deal for Jennings, smg58?

I wasnt gonna make a move til I saw who got Pelfrey.
I didnt think I had a snowballs chance, bein 12th in line on the wire when he became available.

I dont really want to deal Jennings, but Ill propose a countertrade.
If you go for it, I wont be able to refuse.

I still see my original offer on the table.

If you have a counter offer, make it.

I am hording starting pitching and am willing to deal-
I need saves-
I need stolen bases-
Any player who could boost my weak areas will be considered.

SOMEBODYYYYY....HEP ME!
lol.

In regards to my post above---i would rather conduct dialogues here thru PM than with the Yahoo interface set up.

It doent leave much room for negotiation or pounding out deals. And that business where you have to decide who to drop in a lopsided trade before its a reality--that kinda bites.

So pleaze deal with me here thru PMs if you are interested,

Still looking for a closer.
Ill also deal rookie 1B/2Bman Kendrick for the right outfielder.

5 days till the deadline.

I just dealt a closer, and I don't think I can afford to part with a second one. Then again, I wasn't planning to deal Jones either, so I guess I can be swayed.

Good hitting outfielders are really hard to find. A couple of weeks ago I looked at the rosters to see if anybody would conceivably take Jose Valentin for an OF with a better bat, and came up with no good ideas.

Im about to just give up on the saves dept.
Maybe just focus on my ERA & WHIP-try to get that down again.
When i did that mid season it got me a climb into 1st place, where i stayed for about 5 minutes(lol).
Pitchers like Beckett are killin me tho.
Thats why I moved Willis-
I really think he'll have a nice Sept and wanted to keep him for that, but I cant carry both anymore---1st half Willis drove me crazy-more recently Beckett.(pitched well tonight tho-[to that manager I offered Beckett to--I nixed that deal because SS Crosby, who I also offered, is injured with a bad back and is questionable].)

I like my outfield as is, esp this new guy on the Asstros, Scott, but Id just love getting another decent OF and use Soriano at second base.
That would be ideal.

And the Bay/Willis/Kotsay for Soriano deal.
I have/had Bay in both my leagues, and when he gets hot, he goes on tears.
And of course, since the trade was finalized hes been going on a tear--lol.
He even finally stole a freakin base tonight(hadnt since Aug 3rd).
On the whole Im disappointed with him this season tho.
I can only hope Soriano has the Sept Im looking for.

I just read that Beckett left last nights game with a cut on one of his pitching finger.

Great.
