vs.

"Blitzkreig Bop"vs."Sweet Child O' Mine"
"Teenage Lobotomy"vs."November Rain"
"Sheena is a Punk Rocker"vs."Paradise City"
"Rockaway Beach"vs."Welcome to the Jungle"
"Do You Remember Rock 'n Roll Radio?"vs."You Could Be Mine"
"Bonzo Goes to Bitburg"vs."Don't Cry (original lyrics)"
"I Wanna Be Sedated"vs."Mr. Brownstone"
"We're a Happy Family"vs."Estranged"
"Rock 'n Roll High School"vs."Civil War"
"53rd and 3rd"vs."Patience"
Interesting Fact: This may have already been covered in this space. The rotating chair behind the Ramones drum kit was mostly occupied by Tommy and Marky Ramone, leaving peeps (me, anyway), of the impression of a bitter rivalry between the two; divided loyalties among the band; and artistic differences erupting, getting settled, and erupting again. In fact, the two were friends, and were both strongly committed to the band, but neither could stand being on the road for long bouncing in the back of the van and putting up with the draining extended ongoing feud between Johnny and Joey. So, they'd call each other up at the beginning of each recording/touring cycle and decide whose turn it was to put up with it.
Interesting Fact: In 2002, Axl Rose cancelled a concert in Vancouver, starting a Canadian riot. The official reason that it was cancelled was that weather conditions would not allow Rose's plane to leave LA. Has LA ever had weather conditions that caused the cancellation of a plane flight? It's just such a seventies throwback. Axl may be the very last reclusive bitter rock star so indifferent to his fans that he causes them to riot in their hockey jerseys. Straight out of Almost Famous.

"Blitzkreig Bop" vs. "Sweet Child O' Mine" - GnR

"Teenage Lobotomy" vs. "November Rain" - GnR

"Blitzkreig Bop" vs. "Sweet Child O' Mine" -- Ramones
"Teenage Lobotomy" vs. "November Rain" -- Ramones
"Sheena is a Punk Rocker" vs. "Paradise City" -- GnR
"Rockaway Beach" vs. "Welcome to the Jungle" -- Ramones
"Do You Remember Rock 'n Roll Radio?" vs. "You Could Be Mine" -- Ramones
"Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" vs. "Don't Cry (original lyrics)" -- tie
"I Wanna Be Sedated" vs. "Mr. Brownstone" -- Ramones
"We're a Happy Family" vs. "Estranged" -- tie
"Rock 'n Roll High School" vs. "Civil War" -- Ramones
"53rd and 3rd" vs. "Patience" -- tie

Not much of a contest: a run-of-the-mill heavy metal act vs. the kings of punk. The Ramones basically invented a whole musical genre while GnR were just content to imitate Led Zepplin

Ramones 8.5-1.5

"Blitzkrieg Bop" vs. "Sweet Child O' Mine" GUNS - One of the greatest riffs of all time
"Teenage Lobotomy" vs. "November Rain" GUNS - You want a rock epic? You got a rock epic.
"Sheena is a Punk Rocker" vs. "Paradise City" GUNS - Riff after riff after motherfucking riff.
"Rockaway Beach" vs. "Welcome to the Jungle" GUNS - The original.
"Do You Remember Rock 'n Roll Radio?" vs. "You Could Be Mine" RAMONES - I'll throw them a bone, even though YCBM rules. Nah, no I won't. GUNS
"Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" vs. "Don't Cry (original lyrics)" GUNS - Huh?
"I Wanna Be Sedated" vs. "Mr. Brownstone" GUNS - I get up around seven, go on stage about nine. Get on the bus about eleven, sippin' a drink and feeling fine. Axl writes a nice biography of Seawolf.
"We're a Happy Family" vs. "Estranged" GUNS - Like November Rain, without the popular video.
"Rock 'n Roll High School" vs. "Civil War" GUNS - What's so civil 'bout war, anyway?
"53rd and 3rd" vs. "Patience" GUNS - HA! Get out of here, punk boys.

The Ramones used basically the same two chords over and over, and whereas the Gunners imploded pretty quickly, what they released kicked an enormous amount of ass. I like the Ramones, but I think they shot too high.

I will admit that I'm selfishly bitter that Axl might be starting to get his shit together. We saw the last ever GNR show, at MSG a few years back. (A few days later, they blew off Philly, and then Mr. Bailey basically became Brian Wilson for a few years, but with only half the weight gain.) I was hoping that I could have been there for a little bit of history. But alas.

"Blitzkreig Bop" vs. "Sweet Child O' Mine" Great top 4 of the lineup for both bands. They Tie on the first one.
"Teenage Lobotomy" vs. "November Rain" Guns N Roses, with probably their best song.
"Sheena is a Punk Rocker" vs. "Paradise City" Wow, tough call here. New York City really does have it all, and let's face it, artistic license noted, but I've been to West Lafayette, and it ain't pardise. To add insult to injury, I saw neither green grass nor pretty girls while there. Ramones
"Rockaway Beach" vs. "Welcome to the Jungle" Wow, tough vote. Think I have to award the Tie again.
"Do You Remember Rock 'n Roll Radio?" vs. "You Could Be Mine" Ramones
"Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" vs. "Don't Cry (original lyrics)" Ramones
"I Wanna Be Sedated" vs. "Mr. Brownstone" Ramones
"We're a Happy Family" vs. "Estranged" Ramones
"Rock 'n Roll High School" vs. "Civil War" Ramones
"53rd and 3rd" vs. "Patience" Ramones Ramones

Ramones 8-2. GnR could've definetly gotten more votes had they stacked their 4 best songs against weaker Ramones songs.

"Blitzkreig Bop" vs. "Sweet Child O' Mine"
Killer matchup. I’m going to go with the song that made me cry over the song that made me pogo… this time. Guns n’ Roses

"Teenage Lobotomy" vs. "November Rain"
“NR” is too self-consciously epic. Could you imagine how much you’d’ve hated “Stairway” if you first heard it as the lead single on a long awaited followup to a breakthrough, that was finally released as two separate albums because people are so desperate that you might as well make them pay twice? Yuck. Ramones.

"Sheena is a Punk Rocker" vs. "Paradise City"
Ramones by several laps. Several.

"Rockaway Beach" vs. "Welcome to the Jungle"
Ouch. Tie.

"Do You Remember Rock 'n Roll Radio?" vs. "You Could Be Mine"
Ramones. I like the Spectre stuff.

"Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" vs. "Don't Cry (original lyrics)"
Neither of these cranks my jalopy. The topicality of “Bonzo” dulls the incisive irony of the Ramones, and “Don’t Cry” has one of those doubletracked lead vocals that creeps me out. Call it a tie.

"I Wanna Be Sedated" vs. "Mr. Brownstone"
Another easy Ramoney win here.

"We're a Happy Family" vs. "Estranged"
We’ve classic Ramones changes in “We’re a Happy Family” along with Joey still articulate enough to handle a very staccato vocal. That beats head-bobbing arena rock — even with a soaring Lynyrd guitar line — any day. Marones.

"Rock 'n Roll High School" vs. "Civil War"
Good try by Axl here, but “RnRHS” is tough to beat. Ramon Castros.

"53rd and 3rd" vs. "Patience"
I’ll take the three-movement, drumless, bassless chick ballad here. “53rd and 3rd” has an uncharacteristic big dumb rawk beat and it’s a pretty budget sounding recording even by early Ramones standards. Guns n’ Roses

Johnny Joey Dee Dee Marky Tommy CJ Ritchie et al. win 7-3.

I appreciate you holding the voting open for me, but you might as well close the voting. I ended up doing paper work from the office all night and never got to brush up on a few tof the Ramones songs.

At this point, it doesn't look like my vote will make much difference one way or the other. This one appears to be a landslide victory for the Ramones.
