Angola:
*stamps*

Ah yes, at long last, the FIFA seal of approval that Angola has been seeking, unsuccessfully, since 1984. For the first time ever, the Palancas Negros (Black Antelopes) will be making their way to the World Cup.

Football has long been a popular sport in Angola, being brought to them during their colonization by Portugal. Interestingly enough, in their first World Cup game ever, they will get to face their former rulers as the face up against Portugal this Sunday. Will this give them extra motivation to win? Or do the effects of the colonial rule that ended just over 30 years ago in 1974 still weigh heavily on their pysche?

Of course, friendly matches between Portugal and Angola have, in the past, ended with Portugal easily handling the inexperienced Angola teams but Angola hopes this time will be different. With more on the line and with Angola embracing their underdog status, anything is possible.

Being the lowest ranked FIFA team to make it to Germany, the odds are long for them to win it all . . . or any game at all for that matter. The fact that they are even here is a surprise to most. Pulling both Nigeria (the favorites of Africa to go to Germany) and Zimbabwe in their qualifying groups, after having barely made it out of the pre-priliminary round, it looked as if they were going to have to wait another 4 years for a chance to make it.

However, strong defense and a great offensive effort by their captain and lead goal scorer Akwa led them to a 21 point tie with Nigeria in the final rankings of the African Zone Group 4. Having previously defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the final 6 minutes of the game on a goal by Akwa in June 2004, and drawing a 1-1 tie from them a year later, their head to head record crowned them the victors and granted them their passport to Germany.

People to watch:

As mentioned above, Akwa, their captain and leading goal scorer should be the focus of their offensive push . . . as well as the focus of the other teams' defenders.

Abreu's family fled Angola during the civil war that followed Portugal's exit from the country. He considers both Angola and Portugal to be his home and is torn by having to play them in the open game. Where do his loyalties really lie? The match tells all. . .

The coach, Luis Oliveira Goncalves, took over for fired coach Ismael Kurtz during the pre-preliminary rounds after a poor 3-1 loss by the team in their opening match against Chad. He brought the team together and has led them this far and expects them to go even further.

Mexico and Iran going at it in Nuremberg. Top story lines are the state of Mexican goalie Oswaldo Sanchez, playing just two days after his father died of a heart attack and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad not in attendence because, well, the Germans said he's not welcome after he called the Holocaust a "myth".

Lots of boos when the Iranians were introduced. So far, Sanchez has look sharp and focused in net.

Mexico and Iran in action now.
The game is 15 minutes in, with 14:57 of that time being used to discuss the death of the Mexican goalkeep and the statements of Iran's president.

In other news, fun game.

Fuego rápido. Mexico adds another goal on a beautiful header. 3-1. This one's about done.

If there were more goals as pretty as that one, I'd watch a lot more soccer.

Angola's taking everything Mexico can throw at them and still find themselves in a scoreless tie in the 86th minute.

Pretty sick one timer puts Portugal up 1-0 on Iran in about the 60th minute or so.

Shot was taken by Deco's right foot from just outside the box near the center of the field, pass came from the left.

Seeing that I am the Squid I don't think that's likely. But I am overdue for some archiving so maybe I'll find it along the way.

Here's my Portugal preview for posterity.

Portugal

About Portugal

The Republica Portuguesa is a nation in the southwest of Europe sharing the Iberian Peninsula with Spain. 10,605,870 Portuguese live within the nation's 92,391 sq km (approximately the size of Indiana). Portugal as an independent entity goes back to 1143. The monarchy was overthrown and replaced with the current republic in October 1910. Prime Minister Jose Socrates is the current head of government. Lisbon is Portugal's capital and largest city. The Portuguese celebrate their national holiday - Portugal Day - each year on June 10 (which this year is the day before Portugal's first group match versus Angola). Source: CIA World Factbook.

Futebol in Portugal

The top professional league in Portugal is Liga Portugesa de Futebol Profissional and Portuguese players play in the top leagues across Europe. The national team makes its fourth appearance in the World Cup final, previously appearing in 1966, 1986, and 2002. Their first appearance was the Seleção's best showing as the made it to the semifinals losing to host and eventual World Cup champion England. The team had high hopes coming into the 2002 World Cup but did not make it past the group stage after falling to upstarts USA and South Korea. Sources: FIFAWorldCup.com and BBC Sport.

Futebol Legends

Eusebio without a doubt is Portugal's all-time soccer great. Eusebio's 9 goals were the most for any player in the 1966 World Cup and almost single-footedly led Portugal to their 3rd place finish. He had a long and succesful career in the Portuquese Leagues receiving many top-scorer awards before finishing his career in the NASL and Mexican League. José Mourinho currently the manager of Chelsea FC is considered one of the top managers in European football. Sources: FIFAWorldCup.com and BBC Sport.

This Year's Side

Portugal breezed their way through the qualifiers, undefeated in their group, to earn a spot in this year's finals. Along the way Portugal scored 35 goals and allowed only 5, the tops in Europe. Striker Pauleta led all of Europe with 11 of those goals. Cristiano Ronaldo a forward for Manchester United is the team's star player (but should not be confused with Ronaldo the star player for Brazil). As you can see from the photo on the right he's also a great prayer. While now past his prime, Luis Figo is considered one of Portugal and the world's top footballers. He came out of retirement from international competition this year to resume his position as captain of the Portuguese side. The forward currently plays for the Italian Serie A club Inter Milan. Portugal is managed by Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Matches and Expectations

In group D play, Portugal will face Angola on June 11, Iran on June 17 and Mexico on June 21. The meeting with Angola is being played up as a David-Goliath match with the Angolan's hoping to gain a point from their former colonizers. The most challenging match will come against Mexico. The Portuguese team is strong and well-rounded on offense and defense, with perhaps their only weakness in goal. Their current world ranking is 7. Portugal should have no problem qualifying for the knock out rounds, although things will get tougher as they'll likely have to face the Netherlands or Argentina in the Round of 16. All in all, Portugal is good bet to get to the quarterfinals, possibly further.
