I still am thinking in old Mets mode. When someone mentioned the word before the final game of a series, it always seemed the Mets would lose. I forgot it is a new era.

Woody for Valentin isn't surprising; Marrero for Milledge somewhat is.
Punishment?

I'm certain. As certain as I am that WWSB will it explain it away by saying "I just wanted to give him a blow" and insist the punishment he's not handing out is not related to Milledge's loafing; and in fact, Milledge's loafing is yesterday's news and so why do you wanna write about that anyway.

I don't think its punishment.
Lidle is a "crafty veteran" who has sometimes given the Mets fits. He might be too much for Lastings to handle. Looks like Willie is loading up the lineup with lefty batters. Cliff's apparently not ready to play yet, so Eli it is.

seawolf17

Gotta figure Eli's going to play some during the DH days, so they probably want to get him some ABs.

I don't have a huge problem with Willie lying about punishing his guys. Is it really going to help Milledge to have his punishment announced on Sportscenter?

Besides, on M&MD yesterday, Willie said he wanted to get Eli a start.

BTW, your post reads like you were channeling someone else when you wrote it.

Trachsel has been having a bad year. I have a feeling that his next 5 or so starts will determine his fate with this Mets team.

KC
Jun 15 2006 12:54 PM

I think punishment is a little strong. Willie said on the pre-game that he told
him what he should have done and that the game is faster here and there's
little room for mistakes and that he would have told the same thing to any-
one on the team and that Lastings was responsive in a positive way. (total
paraphrasing on my part)

Team's playing like .800 ball the last twenty games, Willie can do and say
what he wants for now.

Elster88
Jun 15 2006 12:55 PM

]Trachsel has been having a bad year. I have a feeling that his next 5 or so starts will determine his fate with this Mets team.

I guarantee you that that is not the case. Traxxxx is here for the rest of the year. Archive it as a prediction.

To dump him and keep El Duque is the height of stupidity, shut outs in the desert nonwithstanding.

Hillbilly
Jun 15 2006 01:00 PM

No matter how he pitches? I mean if he returns to his career norms, sure he stays. OTOH, if he continues to struggle he'll lose his job to Bannister or Pelfrey.

Elster88
Jun 15 2006 01:01 PM
Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Jun 15 2006 01:02 PM

I guess not no matter how he pitches. I'm saying as long as he pitches reasonably close to career norms. If his ERA stays at 5 or below, I say he stays on the team. And if it stays that high, that means he's pitching just as poorly as he has been.

So I guess what I meant to say was, if he continues to pitch at the same poor level he has, he will stay on the team and in the rotation.

Edgy DC
Jun 15 2006 01:02 PM

="KC"]Team's playing like .800 ball the last twenty games, Willie can do and say what he wants for now.

"And the Mets are up 7-2 in the third, in a game that's remarkable because Willie Randloph is piss drunk and waving a loaded gun at his players. He may get criticized by the talk radio crowd for this tomorrow, but I say, hey, it's working. A lot of things haven't worked for the Mets the past five years and if Willie is getting them to play .800 ball by instilling in them a healthy respect for the game under threat from a snub-nose revolver, well, I think Omar should pat him on the back, say good job, and stay the heck out of his way. And... this is a real treat. Ralph Kiner is joining us in the booth! What do you say, Ralph?"

"If you were slumping, or he didn't think you were playing heads-up ball, Leo Derocher used set your bed on fire when you were sleeping."

OK Trax. Get ball throw strike you got a 4 run lead and a red hot offense.

MFS62
Jun 15 2006 01:27 PM

I wonder if Lastings put his arm on Marrero's shoulder and said "Kid. You gotta' swing the bat."?

What's the over/ under for the number of runs Traschel will give back in the bottom of the first? That has been his pattern after the Mets have scored for him recently.

Are you in Phillies territory?

No.
It came back on around when I started complaining, anyway.

Hillbilly

Valentin with the PH sac bunt. Successful but your pitcher should be able to do that and help save the bench.

ScarletKnight41

I lost SNY a couple of times also. Fortunately, I could switch to the Phillies station during those times.

Who's their closer again?

Yancy Street Gang

He's gotten the first two outs.

I assume the plan is Sanchez for the 8th and Wagner for the 9th?

Looks like it. A couple of full counts, but a nice 1-2-3 7th none the less.

Rotblatt
Jun 15 2006 03:47 PM

Not bad, Aaron. 17 pitches, 3 outs, 1 K.

He supposedly has been working on a mechanical flaw in his delivery. I wonder if it's fixed . . .

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 15 2006 03:50 PM

That's encouraging.

I worry that WWSB will use up his bullpen guys the way his mentor Torre used up guys Stanton and Nelson.

It's almost as if more than 2 trustworthy set-up men is more than can be managed.

MFS62
Jun 15 2006 03:51 PM

Only six hits so far today. Maybe Lastings is the straw that stirs the drink.
You can't imagine how happy I am that Met-vulture Cormier wasn't put in a position to win the game.

I don't really like a plan that involves three pitchers protecting a one-run lead over three innings.

Aaron pitched well in the 7th. I'd give him the 8th, too.

Elster88
Jun 15 2006 03:54 PM

Believe it or not, not a lot of offense today. 3 of the runs came on one swing.

Elster88
Jun 15 2006 03:55 PM

I'm all for punishing the wicked, and I don't think that Milledge is a .300 hitter yet, but maybe the best day to put in Marrero is not the same day that Woody and Castry get starts.

MFS62
Jun 15 2006 03:56 PM

Second guess alert.
The next three guys up for the Phills are excellent fastball hitters.
Sanchez is a fastball pitcher.
Heilman's best pitch is the changeup.

What will Willie do?

A one-run lead. The Mets are winning, aren't they?

Holy crap!
I just got home and saw the box score.
Julio Franco had a stolen base?

Did anyone see it? Was it close?
Has Sal Fassano been released yet?
Did Julio require oxygen?
Anything weird about the play?
Could it been scored as "indifference" (A newfangled scoring term I hate)

Inquiring minds want to know..

The pitcher decided to pay him little attention so Julio took off after the first glance. The throw was wide but might not have nabbed him even if good.

From now on, all IGTs that may be the final game in a sweep must contain the word sweep in the title.
