Who do you want to win the upcoming 3 game series between the Phillies and the Yankees?

We have a huge lead.

But the Yankees aren't in our division so who really cares how they do?

'Course some people hate the Yankees more than others.

Edit: Typo

Personally, I'll take a Yankee sweep every time they face a non-Met NL East team.

"I hate the Yankees so I want my divisional rivals to win" smells bad. My response is, "Stop caring about the Yankees so much."

If the race was close, I'd want the Yankees to beat the Phillies.

But it's not. So I don't.

If it's a four-game series, those 2-1 options don't add up. (Unless we're supposed to root for one rainout.)

Go Yankees. Pinstripes, mystique and aura, Captain Derek and all that.

I'd rather be 10, 11 or 12 games up than 9.5 or less. I don't care enough about the Yankees to stop caring about that. Of course, I don't live in the New York area so I don't have to hear about it as much.

I go with Phillies take 2 of 3 for the following reasons:

1. Except when they're playing the Mets or threatening their divisional lead I kind of like the Phillies (I'll have 'em lose one game so their heads won't get to big though).
2. It would be really cool if the Phillies won the wild card and played (and lost to) the Mets in the NLCS.
3. It would be really cool if the Yankees didn't play in the postseason at all.

Again this is all contingent on the Phillies being way, way back in the standings at the start of the series and not gaining on the Mets in the process.

No game Thursday. I don't think interleague does four-game series.

I'll root for the Yankees to sweep, Boston to win 8 straight, and the Yankees to lose four in a row after the series with Philadelphia.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 19 2006 09:43 AM

I didn't think so either, although the Mets and Orioles played four one year back in the 90's.

Your initial post in this thread says "4 game series" which is why I raised the question.

0-4 is "best" for us, but I'll be more than happy with 2-2, and not especially unhappy if the MFYs are humiliated 4-0. We win no matter what.

Phil's sweep, BUT Steinbrenner falls so in love with Pat Burrell's dominance that he trades Wang to the Phils for him.

My ideal situation: Phillies sweep while the Mets go 3-0 over the same period. Then let Boston take three from the Phils over the weekend.

It's gotta be Yankees sweep. I hate the Yankees as much as the next guy, but I don't want to see anyone -- the Phillies, the Braves, anyone -- closer than ten games back the rest of the year.

Please, lets have a bit of perspective on this. This is the team in 2nd place right now, playing a team who's place in the standings have no bearing on us. Not even for the Wild Card.

You are tempting fate by wishing for such a senario where the Phillies and Mets both sweep their respective series just because of your hatred of the MFY

i hate the MFY, but i'm not self-destructive enough to root for the Phillies to beat them.

I want each game to go at least 15 innings. I want exhausted bodies on the field. I want the managers to have to resort to putting in A-Rod and Burrell as emergency pitchers. I want both teams spent and demoralized after this excruciating series.

If I get that, it doesn't matter who wins or loses each game.

I hate the Yanks as much as the next guy but I goota stomp the Phillies right now.

Yanks to sweep and break the Phillies spirit.

Elster88

That scenario sounds great to me. But it could be capped off by the Yanks winning each game.

Where's that villagers with torches pic when you need it? I want to start a witch hunt to root out the Yankees sympathizers in this forum.

Seriously though, I'll go with Scarlett's demoralizing scenario over anything else.

You know he only throws triple-digit heat in blowouts.

I want to see the Yankees beat up on the Phillies and drive a stake through their hearts...

Yancy Street Gang

I guess I'm in the minority here.

The stakes in the Phillies hearts can wait a few more days. They're down and in disarray anyway. I see no need to root for the Yankees to advance their own cause.

I'd certainly feel differently if the Yankees were nine games out (or up) and the Phillies were a half game behind (or ahead of) the Mets.

I'd like to see the Yankees get swept, a fine difference from wanting to see a Phillie sweep.

Short-term, I want to see the Mets beat the Reds tonight. Long-term, I want October in New York to belong to us and only us. At 9-1/2 up, we can be picky about aesthetics.

The Phillies have my permission to win as many games in the MFY series as we win in our upcoming one.

Elster88

Both games ended with a score of 4-2 yesterday, and the lead over Philly is trimmed to 8 and 1/2.

Centerfield
Jun 20 2006 11:51 AM

I can't believe what I'm hearing here. I hate the MFY's as much as anyone else, but rooting for them to lose is a far, far distant second to me rooting for the Mets to make the playoffs. Go MFY's. Go Mystique and Aura. Go Power Pinstripes Pride People.

To root for the team directly behind the Mets citing their big lead strikes me as getting way way too comfortable here in June.

Willets Point
Jun 20 2006 12:09 PM

Could also be evidence that there are some among us who feel that the Mets cannot win this on their own in a potentially tight (and exciting race) and that they need the other teams to flop in order to win. I prefer that the NL East be a strong division and that the Mets come out on top because they control their own destiny and that regular season play keeps them in tune for tightly-played post-season games.

I'm just genetically pre-disposed to root against the Yanx - I just can't do it*.
And, yes, given the choice of Mets & Yanx winning pennants vs both losing out I'd obviously pick the former over the latter. I guess some of us are just tempting fate by feeling we can win this year even without help for this 3-day period; hence my chicken-shit answer that I'll grant the Phils as many (but not more) wins in this series as we get in ours.

* I even tried early in my life to root for both but failed miserably. Nor did I jump on the bandwagon (which a sizeable minority of Met fans did) when the Cone/Straw/Gooden Yanx were breaking through in '96. I still blame those "fans" for causing the MFY late-'90s run.

Frayed Knot
Jun 20 2006 09:54 PM

And if you want someone to blame for the Yanx "falling apart" once they come up against our division, look no further than Ryan Howard for tonight.
- A 3R HR breaks a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 1st
- Then, after the Yanx had tied it 3-3, he hit a 2R bomb (both off Mussina)
- The Yanx then caught up and tied the game a 5 when Howard stroked a 2-out/2-RBI triple off lefty specialist Mike Myers who was, of course, brought in just to face him.

Heading for the 8th inning it's 7-5 Phils - and Ryan Howard has all 7 RBIs

D-Dad and I were talking with MK's former teacher tonight - a very nice man, despite being a Phillies fan. We were discussing the Phillies/MFY's series, and how MK was conflicted about it. The teacher observed, "Yes, I can see that - for him it would be like Hitler facing Stalin."

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 20 2006 10:34 PM

Phillies fans simply don't realize that, to Mets fans, the Phils are neither Hitler nor Stalin. They're more like some random Prime Minster of Canada.

Yanx tied it up at 7 then went ahead 9-7.
So then Ryan Howard has a chance to turn a monster night into a FREAKIN MONSTER night comes up with 2-on & 2-out as the winning run ... and grounds out to end the game.

Willets Point

I tuned in for the end of the game. When I flipped on the game, I was hoping to find that the game was over and Philly was lost. But instead, I found the Phillies rallying and Mariano on the mound. And instinctively started rooting for the Phils to win it.

By the time Ryan Howard came up I had to remind myself that I wanted the Yankees to win.

Sure, I posted earlier that I was going to root for the Yankees to win. I don't think I realized until tonight just how counter-intuitive that would be.

Frayed Knot
Jun 21 2006 09:10 AM

I look at it this way:
While I'm watching I'm hoping that the Yanx look bad; that they lose a Mussina-started game right on the heels of losing a Unit-started game; that a 1st-baseman they have no hopes of landing for at least 5 years makes them his bitch while Steinbrenner berates his people for "allowing him" to play elsewhere; that Mariano blows the game after pitching two innings which also blows his availability for the next game.

And then if it doesn't happen ... well I can still justify that it's OK because it helps us.
Either way; I WIN!!!!
