Telling Lineup Tonight

The Mets have had two starting outfielders hurt, and have been playing Endy Chavez and Lastings Milledge. They've both done more or less OK, with Endy's game showing all the polish that Milledge's lacks.

Reports yestereday had Xavier Nady out of the lineup because of a day game after a long travel night. Presumably, hels back in the lineup tonight. Who sits?

If Milledge sits, so sits any last expectation that he has a chance of sticking after the return of Cliff Floyd. But... if Milledge starts, the suggestion may be there that (1) the Mets are in fact still looking for Milledge to contribute before September, and (2) maybe therefore will consider trading one of their corner outfielders for pitching.

Pure specuation there, especially considering (2) is so health-dependent. But that's where columns come from --- drawing dodgy inferences from things like lineup cards.

I think Milledge is more likely to play because as we've heard, Willie wants him active and not sitting. Endy is a reserve player, it's his job to do some sitting.

My guess is that Lastings will get most, but not all, of the starts during the Nady-but-no-Floyd period.

I think at this stage after seeing Lastings for a few weeks I'd be more than happy to seem him packaged to Oakland for Zito.

I think the reasoning for a Milledge start would be what Yancy mentions, and won't be indicative of any long-term roster planning.

Zito can become a Met in November. I can wait until then.

Meaningless lineup tonight.

Agreed - Getting Zito can wait.

I think it means something if Milledge sits and that, as you noted, the meaning is more speculative if he plays.

Milledge's stint here is most likely done wtih Floyd's return which, I believe, can come as early as Friday. I suspect he'll play most if not all games day until that point.

i thought metirish was serious and i was about to go off on an anti-zito rant...

Willie says he didn't start Milledge yesterday because he didn't think he could handle the breaking stuff from Arroyo.

With that thinking Willie could have sat the whole team really...Arroyo was brilliant.
