Frankie would wear a shirt that said "I'm a cult hero" and he would often rib Smith and the band that anybody could do what they did. They called him on his bluff, and took him into the studio (along with future Cure bassist Simon Gallup) and produced the awesome novelty single "I Dig You," featuring Bell on vocals, under the name Cult Hero. Interesting Fact: "Tatooed Love Boys" rocks in 15/16 time.

"Why Can't I Be You?" vs. "Middle of the Road" - The Cure "Close to Me" vs. "Don't Get Me Wrong" - The Pretenders "Friday I'm in Love" vs. "2000 Miles" - The Cure "In Between Days" vs. "Back on the Chain Gang" - The Cure "Fascination Street" vs. "Brass in Pocket" - The Pretenders "Lovesong" vs. "Show Me" - Tie "Boys Don't Cry" vs. "My City Was Gone" - The Cure "Pictures of You" vs. "Message of Love" - TheCure "Just Like Heaven" vs. "Kid" - Tie "Love Cats" vs. "Talk of the Town" - Cure Brass in the Pocket was the first real music video I ever saw, and it blew me away. I still have fond memories of watching it for the first time (on Wometco Home Television before watching a movie at my parents' house on Long Island). That said, I like most of the songs by The Cure better than the songs by The Pretenders in this challenge. And where was "I'll Stand By You" ? - That's one of my favorite songs. "I'll Stand by You" is billed to the Pretenders, though it has all the hallmarks of solo effort, and is therefore vulnerable to the fickle voting public.

It's been scientifically proven that "2000 Miles" is a prettier ballad than "Stand by You" so that folks who wish to have "SBY" on the list should vote for "2000" first.

My bias is mutual. "Why Can't I Be You?" vs. "Middle of the Road" I cant get from the cab to the curb Without some little jerk on my back Pretenders. "Close to Me" vs. "Don't Get Me Wrong" I make the shapes come much too close Cure. "Friday I'm in Love" vs. "2000 Miles" Sometimes in a dream You appear Outside under the purple sky Pretenders. "In Between Days" vs. "Back on the Chain Gang" It froze me deep inside Cure. Barely winning here. "Fascination Street" vs. "Brass in Pocket" Got motion Restrained emotion Pretenders. Another tighitie. And doesn't that couplet sum up exactly what's going on musically in the song? "Lovesong" vs. "Show Me" Arggh! Tie! "Boy's Don't Cry" vs. "My City Was Gone" Double Arggh! Tie! "Pictures of You" vs. "Message of Love" When love walks in the room Everybody stand up Pretenders. They made Oscar Wilde rock. Holy crap! I just voted against "Pictures of You"! "Just Like Heaven" vs. "Kid" ...dreamed of all the different ways I had to make her glow Cure. "Love Cats" vs. "Talk of the Town" umm.. Ummm... Tie? I'm throwning this one to the Pretenders, barely, 5.5-4.5, I guess because "Talk of the Town" rocks just enough to make me turn it up when it comes on, just a little louder than the nonetheless more clever "Lovecats," so I couldn't bring myself to go Cure that last round. Wow. First contest in a while I didn't have to remind myself of a few songs. There's not only not a bad song in this matchup, there isn't even a medicore one. This is like the 1926 World Series. That last matchup was Grover Cleveland Alexander clearly out of gas, but Bob O'Farrell throwing to Rogers Hornsby to catch Babe Ruth stealing. Sort of.

When I chose to go against the Pretenders I knew it would be a tough match-up...love both bands.
