Winged Foot is sticking it's winged foot up the ass of the best golfers in the world.

Tiger, unable to shake off his rust, misses 3/4 of the fairways off the tee and cards his 2nd straight 6-over par to almost definitely ensure that he'll miss the cut for the first time in a major since he turned pro.

Cut looking to be around +9 !!

Is the last day of the tournament always on Father's Day?

I think so.
It's just that they're making a bigger deal about it this year due to Tiger's father's death recently. Had he played well it would, of course, been cited as the reason because ... well because it fits the pre-written story.

Only Steve Stricker is under par at this point. He's at -1 and - having played early this morning - has been sucking drinks in his hotel room for hours now while everyone else is getting their butts kicked.

Pre-written or not, it would have been an incredibly compelling story. And a nice way for Tiger to start his healing process.

It looks as though, it wasn't meant to be. One can understand if Tiger's focus isn't entirely there this week.

(Or it may just be his driver sucked off the tee like it has been known to do before)

David Duval found his game yesterday, which has been MIA for many years now. If he can resuurect his game this weekend and remain in contention the final two days he will be a major focus of the media. He has shown flashes of his prior greatness on occasion, as he did yesterday, but he has had problems putting together 4 good rounds withiout imploding along the way. It will be interesting to see what happens. Tiger will most certainly be a factor in future tournaments, if Duval can demonstrate that he is once again capable of being one of the elite players in the world, it will be a big story.

Colin Montgomery's pursuit of both his first win in a major championship as well as his first victroy on US soil is another stroyline that will play out over the weekend.

in other words, no mater how he played this was going to be cited as the reason for how he played. stupid broadcasters.

I would be into the final round tomorrow, but instead I'm doing Father's Day stuff.

Phil: we love you and you're fun to watch ... but that was freaking dumb with a captial DUMB! If not for French golfer Jean Van de Velde retiring the stupid trophy a half-dozen years back - when he attempted to go for the par-5 18th green in two with a 3-shot lead and dumped it into the creek - you'd be in polishing that baby on you private jet ride home tonight.
You had a lead on the 72nd hole of the U.S. you've-never-freakin-won-it Open and a par seals the deal on this one and your 3rd in a row, something which has been accomplished oh about ONCE since the Eisenhower administration. Hell, a bogie puts you in a goddam 2-man playoff with a major-less player who was lucky still to be in it at that point. So here's a novel idea ... PICK THE FUCKIN CLUB MOST LIKELY TO PUT THE BALL IN THE FAIRWAY!!!

Instead, Phil grabs the big driver; banks his tee shot off the top of the corporate sponsors' tent over behind yonder trees; then hits that recovery shot off a tree; then dumps the next one in a sand trap; then blasts out of the beach and over the green; then needs to sink that one to avoid losing outright ... which was virtually impossible and didn't come close to happening.
I have no idea how he and his caddy - who reportedly have a very good personal and professional relationship (not always the case) - came up with their line of reasoning in that situation.

This coming from a very casual golf observer but what's the BFD about Phil Mickelson?

That Bearing Point hat he prolly gets mucho $$ to wear makes him look like a complete dork. Does he have any special appeal that guy who actually won didn;t? Cuz I don;t know a thing about him.

What he did today is part of his appeal I think, but we all thought those days were behind him...I guess not.

I don't like him really. Just another dude.

To some he's fun to watch because he's forever getting into and then out of trouble. He can hit some of the most amazing recovery-type shots in the world - particularly around the green. Ball in the trap half-buried in sand with a down-slope towards the hole and the greens faster than bikini-waxed legs? ... no problem, he'll hit a 50-foot high pop-up which will stop where it lands and even back-up 10 feet while whistling Dixie in the air. Landed your tee shot under a deck chair by the course's patio grill? ... OK, let's try a low stinger with a left-to-right trajectory which will go around that set of trees and bounce off the port-a-potty and towards the green. Needless to say, it's that type of mentality that's both his strenght and weakness.

To others he's just the anti-Tiger. Tiger's so good, so focused, so single-minded, and so ... perfect that he's boring to root for and even less interesting to hear as he's got that Jordan/Jeter technique of fulfilling every interview while saying not one thing resembling controverisal or even remotely interesting. In this battle, Phil, for all his prep-Geekiness, actually comes off as the everyman.

Think of him as the guy who splits the difference between the extremes of Tiger and John Daly.

Not so much any more. Even before his father's illness and death.

True, he has come back to the pack (or they UP to him) over the last few years -- but even now he's still #1 by a decent margin which helps to spell out how ridiculously far ahead of everyone he was for a several year span there.
Most good golfers would kill for his off years.

It's still strange. He's on toppity top of the world and he changes his swing and his personnel, because he's so allegedly focused that he wants to be still better, and four (I think) years since, he still hasn't beeen able to ride that new swing to the same level --- being merely probably the best player with four guys hovering around him, rather than the undisputed machine he used to be.

I'm going by what I've read. I wouldn't know one Tiger swing from another.

]"I still am in shock that I did that. I just can't believe that I did that," Mickelson said. "I am such an idiot."
