Let's shake this shit today.

Any reason that Valentin and Woodward shouldn't be looked at in the two-hole on days when Lo Duca is catching as well?

Particularly after Cliff comes back.

MFS62

Two catchers named Castro.
I don't know what that means, or if its a first, but its interesting.

The Reds' Castro is a third baseman, not a catcher. Ross is the catcher.

The Mets still have a visit to Cincinnati coming up this season, don't they?

And there's always October. If the current standings hold up, it's Mets-Reds in the NLDS.

Interesting strategy pitching to Castro with a runner on third and the pitcher due up.

Works though. 1-0 bad guys. Now let's get some runs.

Pedro pitches a 1-2-3 top of the third. 1-0 Reds going to the bottom of the inning.

Yeah, that sounds right. So he's still deserving of full retirement.

When Brooklyn lost its team, I started to look for another NL team to root for and became a Reds fan for a while. I liked Frank Robinson and Vada Pinson. I still like the team and wish them well, but not against the Mets.

Fun day to be at the ballpark. Lots of groups/organizations basically taking over the entire mezzanine, plus the $5 upper deck tickets so the place was pretty full.

Reyes advancing to third on the Woodward groundout was great, he basically didn't stop running while at 2nd base.

Didn't have the benefit of the replay but Pedro looked really disappointed that he didn't get that hit.

Heath Bell waited for all of the infielders before the dugout rail, giving them all props, especially Reyes. He was pumped after the DP.

Curtain call for Wright after the 2nd homer was nice.

You said it. I was in a nice spot in the lodge, shaded but without losing too much view (couldn't see a chunk of the RF corner/Mets pen, but hey).

Didn't realize until I got home that Reyes was the first guy to swipe a bag off Milton this season, but damn was it fun to watch him run. The ground ball play you mentioned was cool because my eyes were following the throw to first, and when I pick my head up, Reyes is at third.

Javier Valentin's AB in the 9th was classic. Guy just did not want to be up there batting in the heat on his day off.

Great, great day to catch a ballgame.

Johnny Dickshot

Elster88
Jun 23 2006 12:19 PM

A good write-up of that play I was wondering about from the Times:

In the fifth inning yesterday, Reyes led off with a single against Reds starter Eric Milton. With Chris Woodward batting, Reyes broke toward second. Woodward's grounder pulled third baseman Juan Castro toward shortstop, and when Castro threw to first, leaving third base uncovered, Reyes accelerated, reaching there easily. He scored on Beltrán's single.

Elster88
Jun 23 2006 12:43 PM

]Wright, watching the ball touch down 415 feet away in the left-center bleachers, almost passed Beltran on the bases because Beltran was preparing to tag up.

Did this really happen (Wright's first home run, the one in the fourth inning) or is the Post just being dramatic?

metirish
Jun 23 2006 12:52 PM

It happened because when they showed the replay Gary mentioned that Wright stopped at 1st because he was going to catch Beltran.

Elster88
Jun 23 2006 01:00 PM

So there never was really any danger of him overrunning Beltran? Did he see him in plenty of time?

It did and it was a dumb play. Tagging from 1st is rarely a good idea.

In order for it to be a good play the ball needs to be:
a) deep enough for you to tag and beat what is usually the shortest throw from the OF
AND
b) hit in such a way where you know - or are at least reasonably sure - it's going to be caught.

But if the ball does neither of those things, and say hits off the wall, then the runner effectively holds the batter to a single and himself to one base on a 400-ft hit.
It's like having a team full of Mo Vaughns: turning doubles into singles since 1995!

Wright's HR, as it turned out, cleared the wall by at least 15 feet (despite freel climbing the wall in a feeble attempt to snag it) so it's not like Beltran's judgement on where the hit would wind up was all that good to begin with.

MFS62

I caught some of it on the replay yesterday. While Pedro was on the mound, they were talking about how (presumably Pedro) was asked to cut the sleeves off of a long sleeve shirt and that when he went to do it, he slipped in the lockerroom and hurt his hip.

I had people over so I couldn't really hear the details, my questions are:

1. Were they, in fact, talking about Pedro?

2. If so, wtf is going on? Can I have details from someone who actually heard the story?
