All-Purpose Stupid Rumors Thread

Ok, I gotta admit, just the thought of this got me excited. And it is just a thought....and not at all probable one at that.

And consider the source, I heard it from M&MD's monologue (hmmm....I guess it's a dialogue with two people). To their credit, they dismissed it almost immediately too.

But what they said, not verbatim but pretty close, came out of a discussion of the NL East"

"The NL East is terrible. The Phillies stink. The Braves are talking about trading people. Apparently, Tom Glavine is running around trying to get John Smoltz over here. I don't see how in the world that happens, but they're best friends."
"I don't see how that happens."
"Me neither but since they're best friends it's being thrown out there as a rumor."

Regardless of what you think of them or their opinion of the Phillies, Braves, and NL East.....the thought is pretty exciting...even as an admittedly unlikely idea.

M&MD dismissed the idea. Realistically, I do too. But still. I wanted to post it. Don't throw anything too heavy at me.

Cool, then we can get Maddux from the Cubs and reunite the big three.

I wonder what Steve Avery is up to. Or maybe look into getting Denny Neagle...

Where's Pete Smith when you need him?

Millwood is still around right? how about John Rocker and Kerry Lightenberg as injury-insurance?

With our luck the Braves trade John Smoltz back to the Tigers in return for a young guy nobody ever heard of who summarily racks up a few hundred wins and saves and becomes the one constant in 11 or 12 consecutive title-winning teams.

Isn't Millwood one of the Benson Bunch?

Their old buddy Kent Mercker was in the opposing bullpen today.

What's really disturbing is I could see that happening.

His name shall be Alexander Doyle.

The Smoltz stuff started because Smoltz himself let on publicly that - if the Braves decide it would be in their best interests to move him - he could be agreeable for the right deal rather than use his veto power over any deal. So Glavine apparently went running to NYM mgmt urging for such a deal. Newsday had something on this today - while also saying how it almost certainly won't happen.

IOW, this is not totally a M&MD-invented concept, but it's also not something on the front burner. I have no idea what Atlanta would want in his return - but we can be sure it would be a shitload.

How about Smoltz for Wagner, and we have Smoltz close for us?

Just kidding.

I like Wagner for Smoltz..Mets would have to sweeten the deal though...

Are you all crazy? We owe the guy thirty million dollars after this year, and anyway, you can't trade a guy in the first year of a multi-year deal or he has the right to become a free agent at the end of the year. Wagner's not going anywhere.

Wagner, like Smoltz, has [u:ae31422cf1]complete[/u:ae31422cf1] no-trade protection; first year, second year, every year.

Well, yeah, I know it can't happen. But it'd be nice if it could.
