From espn.com:

Longtime ESPN Baseball analyst Peter Gammons is out of surgery and resting in intensive care after undergoing an operation to treat an aneurysm in his brain Tuesday. Gammons suffered the aneurysm Tuesday morning near his home on Cape Cod, Mass. He was airlifted to a Boston hospital, where the surgery was performed.

I was just reading (somewhere) that he's got an album coming out of cover songs, sung by him accompanied by various others from both within the music and sports arenas.

Latest I heard was "intensive care for the next 10-12 days".

Resting in ICU. No news of how successful the surgery was or the extent of the damage.

It just won't be a trading deadline without him.

Interesting.
I wish him well.

I saw him on ESPN earlier that day and noticed that he semed to be hesitating/stammering more than usual and wondered if something was wrong with him.
No, I'm not a Doctor, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.

No, I'm not a Doctor, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. That's a great line and it reminds me of a story, that I've likely bored everyone with in the past.

Several years ago when my son was playing Little League and I was coaching first base. During one of our hitters at bats, the home plate umpire called time, took off his mask, and starting rubbing his eye. He called over the other umpire who started inspecting his eye which was obviously bothering him. Soon a collection of various adults had assembled around him in the area between home plate and the mound. I strolled over from the first base coaching box to see if I might be of assistance.

"What hapened Dan?" I inquired as I approached the assemblage.

"I think a bug or something flew in my right eye." replied the umpire, Dan.

By now most everyone is simply looking on as I glanced at Dan's eye.

"Can you tell where it's at?" I asked.

"It feels like it's under my top eyelid." replied Dan. "It's feels like it's on top of the eye."

"Anybody have a Q-tip?" I inquired. Getting no response, I reached into my front pocket and dug out a coin. "Never mind, I can use this dime."

Dan's eyes got real big and he stepped back a little.

"What are you, some kind of doctor?"

"No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night."

I heard a spattering of chuckles as Dan looked at me like I had completely lost my mind. Then one of the coaches said, "It's okay. He really is an eye doctor."

Dan relaxed and I quickly flipped over his upper lid using the dime, found the foreign object on the under side of his upper lid, and removed it with the hem of my shirt. Dan blinked once or twice, said it felt better and the game resumed.

Dan's been a patient ever since and we still laugh about his first "office visit".

That's great, Rockin', but are you also a marine biologist?

I would never think that putting a dime in someone's eye would be the thing a doctor would do.

Something tells me the dime may have been more sanitary than the hem of your shirt. But I'm sure you know what you're doing. (And I suspect use of the shirt was less sanitary than leaving the ladybug or whatever in there.)

A well-prepared eye doctor always carries a sterilized dime in his pocket.

I thought everyone knew that!

I was more concerned about the rough groovy edges of the dime scratching the lens of the eye. Hopefully, he's Steady Doc when he does that manuever.

Good point, WP. For that reason, I usually use a nickel or a penny when gouging somebody's eye.

I didn't get the idea that the dime was on the inside of the eyelid, but rather was used as leverage on the outside to crease the lid inside out.

You have your technique, I have mine.

LOL, Doc. That's a great story.

I'm trying to imagine what he was thinking...when he didn't know you were a doctor...as a stranger approaches and says "I can just use a dime."

HAHAHAHA

Even better was that you delivered the Holiday Inn line on cue. Good stuff.

Edit: You know you've been programming too much (YKYBPTM), when "cue" come out "queue".

Was it actually a bug? Or just dirt?

Peter Gammons update
Posted by: Jeff Horrigan

I’ve got very encouraging news to deliver. Peter regained consciousness at the hospital and was alert, aware and sharp. He had all of the right answers when quizzed about his birthday, address, etc., which bodes extremely well for his recovery. Naturally, he was very interested in the result of last night’s game at Fenway!

Peter will be hospitalized in the intensive care unit for at least 10 more days but the initial indications on his recovery continue to be promising. Gloria passes along her heartfelt thanks for all of the concern and prayers.

Alot of baseball friends of mine dont like this guy as a baseball "expert", but I always have and wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Baseball Tonight and ESPN's baseball coverage in general wouldnt be the same without him.

OK, Now that he is apparently on the way to recovery I can mention this:
In today's article about him in the NY Daily News, it said that when his wife told him that the Red Sox had beat the Mets in the first two games of the series, "he smiled".

So, may all Mets fans join with me in saying a hearty "fukk you, Peter".
