Interesting Facts: The first Elvis Costello single,"Less Than Zero" b/w "Radio Sweetheart (single mix)," was a modest success, granting him the chance to cut an album which the label had him do on the fly backed by a West Coast American Band named "Clover" that they had under contract at the time. Clover would break through years later as Huey Lewis and the News, and some would even go so far as to say it's Huey answering "Oh, why's that?!" on verse three of "(Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes."
Interesting Fact: Many early MTV videos --- The Pretenders "Thin Line Between Love and Hate," The Call's "The Walls Came Down," etc. --- seemed to be set in a fallout shelter, reflecting the cold war anxiety of artists who first became aware in the sixties and were breaking through during the Reagan era. More than mere symbolism, Petty actually rehearsed his early bands in a family-owned fallout shelter in his backyard in Gainesville, Florida.

Tom Petty gets challenged, like, every day.

It appears that Petty hasn't been challenged since May 1 (by the Steve Miller Band). None of my bands have ever been involved in a Petty matchup.

"Alison" and everything from "My Aim Is True" isn't allowed as the Attractions weren't on it (as described in Edgy's phun phact).

So the legend goes, the Attractions were recruited for the subsequent tour by answering a classified ad headed with "FunandGamesandExcitement!"

WSFBPLAU? would've beaten most, but Learning to Fly is one of my all-time favorite Petty songs.

I like this Petty lineup a lot, but it seems like it's still missing something -- the Waiting/Losers/Listen to Her Heart segment seems like it needs a Breakdown or Mary Jane's Last Dance to punch it up some.

Petty wins, 8-2.

"Accidents Will Happen" vs. "American Girl"
--Wow. Love ‘em both. Gonna go with Elvis here because AWH reminds me of fun times as a teenager discovering ‘Armed Forces’ – my intro to EC&TA; while AG reminds me of Sandy Deemer. (Already looked – no photos on-line. Sandy liked this song a lot, and I liked her OK, but whenever it came on she’d complain about her friend who had it played as she walked the aisle at her wedding, as if that was a bad thing. Good close matchup.

"Clubland" vs. "Don't Come Around Here No More"
--‘nother two winners here. I’m gonna go with the spooky gothic of Petty who was stretching it out stylistically.

"Everyday I Write the Book" vs. "Don't Do Me Like That"
--Shit. Elvis wins, barely, for its bubbly wordplay.

"I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down" vs. "Listen to Her Heart"
--The BLC convinced me LTHH is just a bomb. Love it. TP wins.

"(I Don't Want to Go To) Chelsea" vs. "Restless (with Carl Perkins)"
--New-wave beats old-wave here. Elvis.

"I Want You" vs. "Here Comes My Girl"
-- Long before Nirvana’s “Oh well whatever nevermind,” there was “Sometimes, I don’t know why, this whole town just seems so hopeless. I ain’t really sure but seems I remember the good times were a little bit more… in focus.” Neither selection here is my artist favorite but Tom wins.

"Oliver's Army" vs. "Refugee"
--‘Armed Forces’ are nearly unbeatable tho Refugee gives it a good fight.

"Pump It Up" vs. "The Waiting"
--Tom takes a close one.

"Radio Radio" vs. "Even the Losers"
--You had better do what you’d been told. You better listen to your radio. Elvis

"(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding?" vs. "Learning to Fly"
--I like LTF but it can’t rise above the gigantic sound of PL&U. Elvis wins.

Elvis wins 6-4 and I sweated every one. This is what the BLC is all about.

"Accidents Will Happen" vs. "American Girl" Elvis. One of the great opening tracks of any album.
"Clubland" vs. "Don't Come Around Here No More" Elvis
"Everyday I Write the Book" vs. "Don't Do Me Like That" Elvis
"I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down" vs. "Listen to Her Heart" Petty
"(I Don't Want to Go To) Chelsea" vs. "Restless (with Carl Perkins)" Elvis
"I Want You" vs. "Here Comes My Girl" John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Elvis C. have all written songs of obsession with this title. Elvis' is the most obsessed. Elvis.
"Oliver's Army" vs. "Refugee" Elvis. Close but I more often think that "I'd rather be anywhere else but here today" more than wishing that I didn't have to live like a refugee.
"Pump It Up" vs. "The Waiting" Elvis.
"Radio Radio" vs. "Even the Losers" Elvis
"(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding?" vs. "Learning to Fly" Elvis

I actually had it 6.5-3.5, then went back and threw "Clubland"?Restless" into Costello's corner. =orange]Petty hangs on in a 5.5-4.5 slugfest.

Elvis is an attraction and Tom is heartbroken: 48-32 is your final.

Oh, well. Eight voters beats four.

Congratulations to the Attractions. I entered "Learning to Fly" for the first time, sending the rookie in against "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding?" The poor thing came back with a half a point out of eight ballots.

And that's too bad, because Learning To Fly is a great song and one of my TP favorites.

I'm proud of it plugging away the way it did, and hearing a few voters pause before clicking "What's So Funny." "Learning" has earned another go in perhaps a better spot.
