Only one is sensible enough to have an "s" at the end of their name.

Listen for Elliot Easton's underrated guitar work on this Kollection of Klassic Kars!

Moving in Stereo
Best Friend's Girl
Candy-O
Dangerous Type
It's All I Can Do
Let's Go
Just What I Needed
Bye Bye Love
Got a Lot on My Head
Magic

Cuts, except
Candy-O

Interesting Fact: The Cars first single "My Best Friend's Girl" was self-released, and somehow broke the corporate stranglehold on the Boston-area playlists, and became the city's most requested song. When the stations reported their data to Billboard, the magazine's local chart section including this record with "None" listed in the label column, creating a furious bidding war from actual labels.
Interesting Fact: Two days into a double-headliner tour with Cure in 1979, the guitarist and drummer for Sioxsie and the Banshees simultaneously walked out. The band was able to recruit a new drummer (Budgie who remains today), but they had to have Robert Smith step in as guitarist, and the tour continued with him playing sets both with the Banshees and the Cure. After the tour, he was replaced by John McGeoch.

Cut ahead to 1982, and the two bands are touring together again, when John McGeoch collapses onstage in Madrid. Naturally, Smith steps in again. This time, he attempted to continue with both bands after the tour, contributing to the double album Nocturne and to Hyaena (that's his squeeky guitar you hear on "Dear Prudence"), but eventually an illness led to him trimming his obligations to the group he fronted.

How is "Magic" beating "Love Cats"?!

I'll vote this evening. A simple formula for those balloting before then.

"Magic"
The Cars
="Abracadabra"
The Steve Miller Band

Really, it looked like The Cars were fielding a fine lineup until "Magic."

"Magic"?

I shoulda just forwarded the 9 songs on the debut album plus Candy-O or Dangerous Type, but thought I'd mix in a hit.

You profess to hate Magic, but when you're alone driving on a nice day with the top down, and it comes on the radio, you don't dare fiddle with the dial to try and find something else. It's 99% sugar, but what the hey.

Plus it hooked Wolfy up there. He mighta screwed up 60% of the first 9 battles but there's gonna be some of them.

"Moving in Stereo" vs. "Why Can't I Be You?"
--Strange, atmospheric, experimental new wave masterpeice vs. whiny phony big-band groove. If you need two more reasons MIS wins, I give you Pheobe Cates' yabbos. Big Cars win.

"Best Friend's Girl" vs. "Close to Me"
--EZ win for the Cars. A much more complex song than you might first guess and that solo is a good example of Easton's intricate guitar I was talking about.

"Candy-O" vs. "Friday I'm in Love"
--More atmospheric punk wave, kind of a edgy song for a band that fits in your ears so nicely. I'd take the Cure here if I were a sorority girl in 1987, but I'm not.

"Dangerous Type" vs. "In Between Days"
--Candy-O was all about this kinda girl. That's her on the cover! This song had some phenomenal keyboard and vocal effects near the end. A big winner.

"It's All I Can Do" vs. "Fascination Street"
--Mellow groove, Ben sings, and doesn't try to sound like Ric. Cars.

"Let's Go" vs. "Lovesong"
--The Cars' first record was so great, you knew at some point that it'd come back to bite them. Fans were terrified and critics were sharpening their knives when the followup came out, people put on Side A, Track 1 got this and stopped worrying. The third album would be another story, but the Cars pulled off "Let's Go" so easily, they proved they for real. I like the night life Baby.

"Just What I Needed" vs. "Boy's Don't Cry"
--Duh.

"Bye Bye Love" vs. "Pictures of You"
--How awesome is Bye Bye Love? Back in 80 or 81, they set it to a laser show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium alongside the typical industry heavyweights (Dark Side of the Moon, Stairway, etc.) and Bye Bye Love held its own. Fuck that, it killed them. Terrific guitaring again and a Hawkes adding harmonious synths to a ferociously driving back-beat that made everyone slap their armrests in time.

"Got a Lot on My Head" vs. "Just Like Heaven"
--GALOMH rocks more. But don't take my word for it. Cars.

"Magic" vs. "Love Cats"
--Bone. Thrown.

Cars 9, Cure 1 and it wasn't even that close.

You want a hit from after the second album, go for "Drive."

Yeah, you drive the "Magic" car in the Firecracker 500, and I'll drive the "Drive" car. We'll see who wins. Until then, stop insulting the memory of Benjamin Orr.

Huge finish for the Cure and it's a 5-5 tie. "Magic" --- what was he thinking?

Listen, voteseekers. Unperformers in this competition --- certainly on my card --- are tending to be the necromancy songs

  • "Magic"
  • "Strange Magic"
  • "Abracadabra"
  • "Strange Brew"
I suppose if Heart ever gets it together and enters, I won't be in a hurry to vote for "Magic Man," either.

Enough griping about "magic". Put up pretty pictures and grids for the other two matchups.
