5. Bobby Jean
6. Mary (Thunder Road)

Interesting Fact: When the E Street band added violinist Soozie Tyrell upon their 2002 reunion to record and tour for "The Rising," it was viewed by some as a suspicious sign of the band having matured away from rock instrumentation, as well as something of a dis' toward saxophonist Clarence Clemons, giving this jenny-come-lately lines that might have gone to him. In fact, the band had previously employed a violinist --- Suki Lahav --- as early as 1974, until she left in 1975 to move to Israel. Lahav gave the choir-like vocals to "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" and layed the dramatic violin line part on "Jungleland."
Interesting Fact: Legend has it that Keith Richards apparently wrote the signature riff to "Satisfacton" in his sleep. He had been recording riffs on a tape recorder and fell asleep; when he woke up, he almost erased the tape, but decided to listen to it again. He said it was, "two minutes of 'Satisfaction' and forty seconds of me snoring."

At least, people think that's what he said.

BRUCE 6
STONES 4

I am far more of a Stones man than a Bruce man (and I object to "Mary's Place" as a title song not being in the Bruce roster) but Bruce's strength are these girlname songs and not the Stones' strength. I demand a rematch of only apocalyptic songs.

Edgy DC

Yeah, Willets is bravely taking a chance to allow Dickshot to frame the argument this way. Even if the Stones lose, I see them retaking the second slot on an eventual rematch. Should be fun either way.

I thank my opponent for being a good sport but have to say this wasn't calculated at all. It started by trying to to come up with 10 Bruce songs about girls to challenge the Beatles, then thought 'Some Girls!" as I was doing it and changed opponents.

I wasn't thinking of matchups -- I figured if Springsteen had 10 girl songs the top 2 bands in rock history also did.

Grumbling that in a Stones challenge I have to listen to snippets because I don't know some of the songs.

Word was, when I was a girl, that the haunting song "Angie" was written in tribute to David Bowie's wife Angela Bowie.

I liked it anyway

"4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) vs. "Miss Amanda Jones"

"Amanda" rocks with the Chuck Berry riff festival. But I like the March Violets cover from the Some Kind of Wonderful soundtrack better. What irks me is the downer resolution note of "Jones" at the end of each verse. Sandy takes Amanda. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

"Rosalita vs. "Some Girls"

Rosey cleans the floor with all the horny black girls. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

"Candy's Room vs. "Angie"

Candy floors Angie on the strenth of Garry Tallant's bass. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

"Sherry Darling vs. "Parachute Woman"

I don't particularly like either, but the slide guitar of "Parachute" hits me in a I-just-learned-to-do-this-but-don't-I-sound-authentic kind of way. On the other hand, "Sherry Darling" sounds like a Bruce imitator. Tie.

"Bobby Jean vs. "Stupid Girl"

I like the keys on "Stupid Girl," as well as the four-beat Motown stomp on the drums. Stupid is as stupid does, Sir. Rolling Stones.

"Thunder Road vs. "Sweet Black Angel"

"Sweet Black" is interesting and pretty and there's sure a thesis out there about the mixed messages you can get out of Mick Jagger's writing on race (hey, call it "Mick's Messages"), but it's a pistol against a howitzer here. Rolling Stones. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

"Born to Run vs. "Honky Tonk Women"

Someday, the Stones will release a live album without "HTW." Someday, they'll maybe even perform a show without it. Until then, I'm sick of it. Sicker even than I am of "Born to Run," and that's pretty sick. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

"Backstreets vs. "Factory Girl"

Two good songs, but that piano phrase on "Backstreets" gets me every time. I'm sure I blew a cone or two out on this song. I'll tell you, one soft infested summer, me and and a girl named Terry actually did become friends, trying in faith to breathe the fire we was born in. You can blame it all on me, Terry.

It don't matter to me now. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

"Spirits in the Night vs. "Lady Jane"

Rolling Stones. Gimmicky, but it works.

"The River vs. "Sweet Virginia"

Rolling Stones. Also gimmicky, but hasn't played out with me, thanks in part to Keef's screeching harmonies.

BS&tESB wins it 5.5-4.5 6.5-3.5. But, ah, sheesh, I'm gonna be thinking about Terry all day, now.

You're right. I didn't think I had it so close.

Call it 6.5-3.5.

Gwreck
Jun 26 2006 11:55 AM

Uh, that's "trying in vain to breath the fire we was born in" Sorry, couldn't help the OCD there.

"4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) vs. "Miss Amanda Jones" Bruce
"Rosalita vs. "Some Girls" Bruce, easily.
"Candy's Room vs. "Angie" Bruce
"Sherry Darling vs. "Parachute Woman" Bruce
"Bobby Jean vs. "Stupid Girl" Hating "Bobby Jean" is a popular thing for a lot of Bruce fans, given that the song has basically been played to death over Bruce's last 3 or 4 tours. Setting that aside, however, it's still a great song. This is also the only song on this list that might not be about a girl, depending on what interpretation you believe. Bruce
"Thunder Road vs. "Sweet Black Angel" Bruce, and it wasn't even close.
"Born to Run vs. "Honky Tonk Women" Bruce, and the while the early matchups were closer, the train is really steamrolling now...
"Backstreets vs. "Factory Girl" Bruce
"Spirit in the Night vs. "Lady Jane" Bruce
"The River vs. "Sweet Virginia" Bruce. Different type of songs, sure, but "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse?" seals it.

That's Bruce, 10-0.

As mentioned before, the framing of this challenge seriously helps Mssrs. Springsteen, Clemons, Bittan, Weinberg, et. al. I imagine it'd be somewhat closer otherwise...

It is more fun this way. I appreciate Dickshot throwing in a fun new twist to this matchup even if the Stones lose. The loss shall be temporary I assure you.
