Not very sporting to challenge someone just before their own turn. But TMBG weren't going anywhere, anyway. So I'll just do the dumb things I gotta do...

Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head
Istanbul
Birdhouse in Your Soul
Don't Let's Start
Ana Ng
Dr. Evil
Statue Got Me High
New York City
James K. Polk
She's an Angel

Edgy DC
Jun 28 2006 09:25 AM

You're right. I didn't think of that. I'll switch.

Jun 28 2006 09:29 AM

You shouldn't switch. That way you could never challenge Willets Points' bands and I couldn't challenge Dickshot's etc. (I've challenged his many times but not last time).

Man, those videos mostly detract, don't they?

Edgy DC

OK, let's go. Battle of acquired, but delicious, tastes.

vs.

"Mirror in the Bathroom"vs."Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head"
"Best Friend"vs."Istanbul (Not Constantinople)"
"Hands Off, She’s Mine"vs."Birdhouse in Your Soul"
"Too Nice to Talk To"vs."Don't Let's Start"
"Twist and Crawl"vs."Ana Ng"
"Ranking Full Stop"vs."Dr. Evil"
"I Confess"vs."Statue Got Me High"
"Can’t Get Used to Losing You"vs."New York City"
"Save It for Later"vs."James K. Polk"
"Tears of a Clown"vs."She's an Angel"
Interesting Fact: There are currently two versions of this band. They were actually called "The Beat" in their heyday, but they couldn't bill themselves thusly, as there was another band ("The Paul Collins Beat," you may recall) legally blocking them from using that name in the US, so the prefixed "English" onto their name. Now, Dave Wakeling tours the US with "Dave Wakeling's English Beat," while Dave Blockhead, Everett Morton, and Ranking Roger carry on as "The Beat" in the UK, although they played with Wakeling (but not David Steele or Andy Cox, wankers) for a one-off gig sold-out gig at the Royal Festival Hall in 2005.
Interesting Fact: Their fans know this, but few band facts are more interesting than the providential genesis of TMBG. The two Johns goofed around, writing songs together, in high school, but never started an act, and went their separate ways in college. A few years later, their paths crossed while moving into the same apartment building in Brooklyn on the same day.

"Mirror in the Bathroom" vs. "Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head" ENGLISH BEAT
"Best Friend" vs. "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" TMBG
"Hands Off, She’s Mine" vs. "Birdhouse in Your Soul" TMBG in a walk
"Too Nice to Talk To" vs. "Don't Let's Start" Tough one. ENGLISH BEAT.
"Twist and Crawl" vs. "Ana Ng" ENGLISH BEAT
"Ranking Full Stop" vs. "Dr. Evil" Tie
"I Confess" vs. "Statue Got Me High" TMBG
"Can’t Get Used to Losing You" vs. "New York City" TMBG
"Save It for Later" vs. "James K. Polk" TMBG
"Tears of a Clown" vs. "She's an Angel" ENGLISH BEAT

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS 5.5
ENGLISH BEAT 4.5

Both good bands. Prolly not a lot of voters in this contest which would really be too bad as, in my world, everyone should be familiar with both of their material.

Sorry, I'll fix it this evening. Meantime, you can watch the video, or sing these words to yourself:

It's too late now; it's twenty past two
I spent the night just watchin' you
I watched you dance
I watched you move
Can't breath and still I watched you move away

Now I think quite a lot as i stare at my shoes
About all these things that I put myself through
Now there's nothing to say
And there's nothing to do
You're just too nice to talk to
Too nice to talk to
You're too nice to talk to
You're too nice to talk to

The Radcliffs wouldn't come after you
I glance but you just stared me through
Felt such a fool
I felt you knew
But you might tell me to go away
Emotions so guarded
My heart is retarded
You're just too nice to talk to
Too nice to talk to
You're too nice to talk to
You're too nice to talk to

This evening hasn't gone like i planned
Should I take the situation in hand?
Can't go on but I
Can't seem to dance
You chain my feet; I stamp and stamp and stamp

Because nothing i do ever seems to be right
The same dance of mine every saturday night
Out the window you might say
I'm out of of my mind
You're just too nice to talk to
Too nice to talk to
You're too nice to talk to
You're too nice to talk to

Too nice!

Oh, well. I'll save my vote for later.

"Save It for Later" is a wonderful song by any standard and researchers expect many points to come from it.

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 28 2006 12:26 PM

I was a big fan of the English Beat for a couple of years there but their breakup and subsequent shark-jump/future projects (General Public – terrible name, boring music) really threw me off. Not sure even if their good stuff aged so well, but it was fun back when.

"Mirror in the Bathroom" vs. "Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head"
--Edge to EB. Have I mentioned how TMBG can be irritating before?

"Best Friend" vs. "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)"
-- EB. A fun, bouncy take on the more serious ‘mirror’ theme. Like, these guys hated vain people!

"Hands Off, She’s Mine" vs. "Birdhouse in Your Soul"
--Tie

"Too Nice to Talk To" vs. "Don't Let's Start"
--TMBG wins.

"Twist and Crawl" vs. "Ana Ng"
--TMBG wins.

"Ranking Full Stop" vs. "Dr. Evil"
--Remember this one from when I saw ‘em play live, lotsa fun. EB.

"I Confess" vs. "Statue Got Me High"
-- Being dead don’t hurt, no only dying. I confess, this song hinted more at the boring adult hits to come but it was at least backed with interesting instruments and stuff. EB

"Can’t Get Used to Losing You" vs. "New York City"
--TMBG. Not that I mind the other but it is a cover set to a reggae beat, and if UB40 didn’t take all the joy out of that already…

"Save It for Later" vs. "James K. Polk"
--Rare case where a band’s biggest hit could also be argued to be their best song. Or close to it, and I’m not sure now that I said it whether SiFL was their biggest hit. Anyway I like this song, so EB wins.

"Tears of a Clown" vs. "She's an Angel"
--A better cover for sure here. EB.

The Beat beats, 6.5-3.5

Who is the guy in the porkpie hat who doesn't seem to sing or play an instrument (well he does have a tambourine in "Save It for Later") but does a funny dance?

Johnny Dickshot
Jun 29 2006 10:06 AM

Porkpie is Ranking Roger, the other vocalist.

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Jun 29 2006 10:30 AM

The Beat have (a) the best saxaphone player in the BLC (sorry Clarence), and (b) seemingly the most superfluous member in Ranking Roger. Roger would do the harmonies and toast (an echo-heavy Jamaican vocal style that's half-rapped half-sung, often in the Afro-English creole vernacular) on the bridges and outros. But he had the featured vocals on some songs --- "Stand Down Margaret," I think, which isn't featured here because I couldn't get it to upload.

Willets Point
Jun 29 2006 10:23 AM

He should team up with Bez from the Happy Mondays.

Edgy DC
Jun 29 2006 10:29 AM

Bez definitely aces him in superfluousness.

In his support, a lot of ska bands have historically had members whose job it was to be sort of the stage-master, and lend the band more in presence and personality than in musicianship.

Kinda like the mysterious old guy who sat in the rocking chair, center stage, with Arrested Development.

I saw a band dubbed 'The Special Beat' which was a melange of The Specials and The English Beat at the Academy some years back

="Johnny Dickshot"](General Public – terrible name, boring music)

I disagree. General Public was more than serviceable and 'All The Rage' had at least 3 very good tunes.
