IGT 07/03/06 - Remember the Maine? vs PIT

I'm here all alone in the bottom of the 4th...thought I'd start a thread to amuse myself. 1-0 Mets...Maine 6 Ks and only 1 hit against through 4 IP.

Maine dialing up the heat today. He's hit 94 on the gun. The first three batters hit the ball hard, but only one found a hole. I was concerned. Since then, Maine has been impressive.

Mets have first and second no outs in the bottom of 4. Unable to convert as Valentin grounds into the 6 4 3 and Maine chops out. 1-0 Good guys to the 5th.

Ronnie and Gary discussing how sometimes you give up the game and play for the next few. Amazing that they get it, we get it, and Joe Morgan's partner gets it....but Joe himself doesn't get it. I keep forgetting, that's not amazing, it's typical.

I guess it's a good thing that last night, Willie set his sights on winning this game. The Mets need to find a reliable starter to go with Glavine, Martinez and Trachsel. The offense can't be expected score 6 to 8 runs every game.

I think the Mets bullpen is catching whatever Soler had come down with. This team seems to be in a free fall since arriving at Fenway for the start of the series with Boston. They are not only losing, but most games they are getting embarrassed in totally one sided affairs. The All-Star break can't come soon enough.

Ugly. Pittsburgh's one of the worst teams in the majors. Willie needs to knock some sense into the boys.

My guess the poor guy figures that the last two bonafide "aces" from our farm system are currently in Tampa (more or less) therefore why bother with the hope that Pelfrey will amount to anything more than a poor man's David West or Bill Pulsipher

My guess is that the guy just likes to make noise, as he's campaigning for Pelfrey on one hand and declaring that there's no starting pitching in sight on the other hand. The Mets play poorly, he posts his grim declarations, full of bold and empty predictions, and almost never bothers to respond to anyone. Then he disappears for a few weeks until the Mets play poorly again and start his act over again.

Fair enough, but I've heard that excuse given for why we should have traded Kazmir. Not for WHO we eventually gotten, but you can make a convincing argument against your own prospects. Hell how many times has Reyes been written off as someone we should trade before he really becomes an oft-injured "never was" Turns out that was just a crummy year all around

Maine actually pitched well, IMHO. He was....how do you say....lights out....for the first four. The problem is he got tired. And I don't blame him. He's just coming off an injury and all.
