Cabrera needs to be yelled at by his manager... you've got a guy making his major league debut, in the first inning, 2 runners on, and you're swinging at a 3-0 pitch. Thanks!

Miggy Cabrera is a great all-around player but he may be the slowest 23 y/o prof athlete on the planet.

Zvon
Jul 08 2006 05:08 PM

Not the smoothest 1st inning, but Ill take it.

Pelfrey hits Uggla with a pitch, which Im sure was due to nerves.
I hope this doesnt become a beanball war.

I was just jokin in the early IGT about drilling Cabrera again.

The triple is becoming the Mets' signature hit. Endy leads off with one.

Hillbilly
Jul 08 2006 05:09 PM

Endy does his best Reyes with the leadoff triple!

TheOldMole
Jul 08 2006 05:10 PM

What do we know about Delgado?

MMMMM....
Chavez with a Reyes like lead off triple.

And loDuke singles him home!
Hey!
Just like old times.

Hillbilly

Top of the order gives Pelfrey a lead. Lo Duca brings in Endy with a base hit.

Wright's K-ing a lot lately.

Chavez/LoDuca way better than Valentin/Woodward.

C'mon guys, I want some more.

Hillbilly

Floyd loops a hit. Get this, this is the cool part: Manny Acta told Lo Duca to stop at third.

Sweet, Valentin scores 4 more!

No pressure Pelfrey, pitch like you own 'em.

="TransMonk"]Chavez/LoDuca way better than Valentin/Woodward.

I hope Willie takes note of this.

Beltran walks.
Wright, yes FK--I have noticed this, Ks.
Floyd singles and Val with--

THE GRAND KABOOM!

Zvon
Jul 08 2006 05:38 PM

Wright with the error gives one back.

Settle down Pelfrey.
make your pitches.

Crap.....was that a safety squeeze?

edit-CBS said Chavez at 1st--this is why reading the game sucks.

Frayed Knot
Jul 08 2006 05:40 PM

Well it's not like they smacking the rook around despite the 2 runs thru 2 innings:
3 hits so far but only 1 has left in infield, plus a BB, an HBP, and an error.

Zvon
Jul 08 2006 05:46 PM

I still dont know if that was a straight squeeze or what, but it reads like one.
lol.
They would try to rattle the rook with something like that, the stinkin fish that they are.

Yea-I read something about worryin about this team (last nites IGT, I think) and I have to agree--this is one team I would worry about ahead of the Phils and the Braves from here on out. From now on they will be the stinkin fish to me.

Zvon
Jul 08 2006 05:51 PM

Nabisco (ok, Nolasco) hits LoDuca.
Stinkin fish.
Beltran follows with a single, Wright with a walk.
Its Cliffy with the bases juiced.

And he draws a walk!
lol.
On 4 pitches.

Valentin again with bases loaded.....
(drumroll please)

Frayed Knot
Jul 08 2006 05:51 PM

It was essentially the "safety" squeeze; runners NOT running and getting the bunt down got the a run.
Not a bad play when you're behind early like that against an unfamiliar pitcher in tough sunlight time; just chip away at the lead.

Valentin's having a nice week this afternoon.
Not bad for a guy many Met fans wanted strung up and shot by the 2nd week of the season.

Zvon
Jul 08 2006 05:58 PM

what an excellent at bat that was!
That was on the 9th pitch of the at-bat according to CBS sportsline.
Thats workin Nabisco till he cracks like a cheap chip.

(Nolasco's gonna kill my fantasy baseball day, but I will feel no pain)

When I was 12, i came up in a game 4 times with the baseloaded.
K, BB, HR, Double. I drove in 7 in our 9-8 win and got yelled at after the game for overunning second (I was heading for third on the double but Micheal Sacks was stanging there - he should have scored!). I got back (Thanks to Micheal's break towards home that drew a throw), but still got the 'you got to keep your head in the game' talk. But anyway, I think Valentin's HR and triple are a bit more of a big deal since it's in the Majors.

Zvon
Jul 08 2006 06:06 PM

Nolascos
ERA for the day- 48.60
Whip- 5.40.

The info just happens to be handy.

Uggla reached on a double.

You need more runs Pelfrey?
Cuz the boys will get em for ya if ya do.
I would think Valentin alone probly has another 7RBIs in him.

Settle in rook.
This game is your game.

Jul 08 2006 06:16 PM

Still not hitting him much (that 2B was just a well-placed bouncer) but his pitch-count is going to make this a 5-and-out deal for the rook's debut no matter what the run cushion is.
They're not getting around much on his fastballs (lotsa fouls the other way) but too many walks (not surprising) and deep counts will prevent him from taking this much beyond 5 IPs

Zvon
Jul 08 2006 06:18 PM

Another not so smooth inning from Pelfrey. A wild pitch in there. Three walks...
Up to 70 pitches in 2.2 innings.
Willies gonna let him try and pitch out of this.
It would be nice if the rook was in long enough to get a win out of this.

Whew----induces the pop up and gets out of it.

Pelfrey gets through the 4th. Up to about 95 pitches. 9-3 Mets

Zvon
Jul 08 2006 06:35 PM

That inning was nice.
Hope that buys the rook 6 innings.
89 pitches thru 4.

edit:
CBS says 89--they are not always right tho. As a matter of fact its amazing how many times they are wrong.

It was part of a roll-call chant that seemed to be coming from the Loge in left field.

Attention morons: wrong team, wrong stadium. Hows about we get our own freakin' tradition.

Addendum: the catcher's not going to respond to roll-call. He's kind of busy, you know?

They were both called up due to injuries. Milledge is back in the minors for more seasoning and so will Pelfrey after the break.

BIG difference

SteveJRogers
Jul 09 2006 09:00 AM

And while we are at it, exactly HOW is anyone catching us this year? Braves and Phillies have quit on the year, the Marlins are way too young to stay with the Mets, this is NOT the 1969 Mets out there (no Ed Charles, Ed Kranepool, Don Cardwell, hell Cleon, Tug and Buddy could have been called "veterans" at the time as well) and the Nationals are a disorganized mess.

My "Congratulations" posts were moronic ways to improve Metly karma, seriously this division is all but wrapped up. Only thing we should be thinking about is how far in the postseason we are going.

And don't take any bows for Milledge yet, last time I checked his performance was given a soundly "Needs more seasoning" and jury is still out on Pelfrey. For all you know we could have another Jefferies and David West on our hands

Gotta say this guy is worse than Bret/Sal, at least Bret/Sal went back and forth, this guy does quick hit & runs. I'm still waiting for him to apologize for thinking I was rude in the ASG thread as well as answering who is catching us for the division and how.

TransMonk

SteveJRogers wrote:

The Chicago White Sox had a 9 game lead last year in their division at the AS break, and an 11 game lead on Cleveland who was in third. By September 22nd the Indians cut that lead to 1.5 games. Oh, and that 2005 White Sox team was better than the 2006 Mets to this point.

Now, the Mets play in a much weaker division and no team has really stepped up. But the Marlins are young, hungry and have more than a little talent. Over the past 40 games, roughly 45% of the season so far, they have a better record than the Mets. And we still have 10 games left with them head to head this season.

Is it likely...no. Would I bet on it...hell no. But, please, let's not pretend that it is impossible.

That being said, I don't want to think about who can catch us or how they are going to do it. I want to win this division going away by 20+ games. But I do believe this team can play better than they have over the past month or so. And they are going to have to if they want to win it all.

From Marty Noble's Game Notes: The Marlins-Mets doubleheader Saturday had rookie pitchers John Maine, Mike Pelfrey, Josh Johnson and Rick Nolasco starting. The last time rookies started for both teams in a doubleheader was on Aug. 7, 1977 -- Moose Haas and Lary Sorensen for the Brewers, and Jerry Garvin and Jim Clancy for the first-year Blue Jays.

The last time rookies started both doubleheader games for the Mets was on Sept. 27, 1995 -- Robert Person and Reid Cornelius against the Reds at Shea. The last time Mets rookies started both games of a doubleheader played before the annual roster expansion on Sept. 1 was on June 7, 1987, when Tom Edens and John Mitchell started.

The last National League doubleheader involving four rookie starting pitchers was on Sept. 28, 1976, when the Mets hosted the Expos. The pitchers were Nino Espinosa and Bob Myrick for New York, and Gerald Hannahs and Joe Keener for Montreal.

From UMDB: Yesterday's most popular lookup? Nino Espinosa.
