We found the owner. Somebody was walking down the alley calling "C.J.!! Where are you C.J.!"

I didn't want to give him too much informaton, so I leaned out the door and called back, "Are you looking for your wife?"

"No man, my dog."

So we reunited them. Poor puppy was missing a foot.

I would say having a bat is worse because it brings on immediate panic, not to mention the loss of property while trying to bat it down.(Somehow my husband managed to sleep through my shreiking the second night)

My son is getting rather good at corralling the bats though. And my daughter is a whiz at it. When she was in college, friends used to call her...

The chipmunk took three days and several failed tricks to get rid of. And the damn cat was no help at all. To tell you the truth, I forget how we finally got it to leave; I just remember it went out the front door

I just wish we could figure out how the bats are getting in

I'm a late comer to the thread, but can offer expert advice.
Bats are harmless and good to have around, but you should never handle them unless you've had a rabies vaccine. Calling animal control is much wiser. Once you show symptoms of rabies – you’re dead!

Cooby's right about these wildlife in the house issues: you need to figure out how they are getting in.[url]

cooby
Sep 25 2006 10:26 AM

Never did figure it out, but fortunately we just had the two. I think it's mostly a hot summer night problem.

Hillbilly
Sep 25 2006 10:30 AM

Check your chimney if you have one. Tell your daughter to keep her hands off of bats (this is too big of risk to take). You can check out the above link, which I think I fixed

Edgy MD

I got bitten by a squirrel once. By the time I got to the library to look up symptoms, it would've been too late for me.

Nice symptoms too. Drooling and delerium --- exactly how this would make me appear differently to an observer?

Teeth marks.

Cooby, bats eat insects. If they are entering your house they may sense there's food there. Check up in your attic/ near your window frames/ around your air conditioners, for insect nests or hives.
And check behind your shutters for where bats may be sleeping during the day. If they're there, during the daytime, squirt them with a hose. The water will drive them away and they won't come back.

This was the voice of experience talking.

Sep 25 2006 10:37 AM

That's a pretty good article. We have I think three chimneys (maybe four) and two fireplaces, an attic, a crawlspace, a garage...the list goes on for access points.

Once when the exterminator and I were looking for them, he looked behind my bathroom mirror and there was one!

MFS, that is good advice too, I will keep that in mind next summer. We don't have shutters, but there is plenty of trim on the house

cooby
Sep 25 2006 10:39 AM

Also, the snake that bit my husband this summer was crawling up the side of the house toward a birds nest we didn't know about, so everybody, keep the birdies away from your eaves, too...

Hillbilly
Sep 25 2006 10:39 AM

Edgy, Rodents including squirrels are low risk and the CDC recommends no precautions for rabies after a bite. You need to be primarily concerned about coyotes, foxes, raccoons, skunks, cats and dogs (although I only know you from baseball fora, I can’t imagine you handling the wildlife on that list). Hey, I drool on myself when I think about the Mets facing the St. Louis pitching staff in the first round, but I had my rabies shots so I’m not concerned.

Snakes don't bite you unless you try to catch them, but tambering with a bird nest is a federal crime. Also a good rule rule of thumb venomous snakes in the eastern US don’t climb, so no worries there.

cooby
Sep 25 2006 10:44 AM

Yes, he apparently knows enough to get bit.
It's the birds that you can't tamper with (see link). Black rat snakes are among the most beneficial wildlife species you can have around your house, since they primarily eat rodents, but take a lot of small birds too (so they keep those birdies out of the eaves).

The Ozark Mountain area is a beautiful region full of hard working family oriented people. For a fairly small region it is notable that about 10% of the top 100 places to live in the US determined by statistics that include education, employment, economy, crime, parks, recreation and housing are in this region (as complied by relocate-America link provided). Like ethnical and religious bigotries, I find that regional bigotry is often rooted in ignorance. I invite you to explore this wonderful area that I’m proud to call my new home. I doubt that I'll ever leave, but it's a hell of ride to Shea!

Oct 02 2006 12:29 PM

Edgy,

I'm very sorry to hear about your friend. Dog attacks are nasty, nasty, nasty.

I thought you'd be interested to know that there is no science to back up the commonly held belief that the American Pit Bull Terrier is any more dangerous than other breeds. In fact (this relates to inhuman acts of animal cruelty discussed in this thread) when they were used for fighting, the ‘pit rules’ stated that any dog that bit a person was to be put down. This actually served to select against aggression towards humans. You shouldn’t blame the breed, but you should be enraged at the dog’s owners. Viscous dogs are trained by viscous people, not bred.

Excellent info on “Pit Bullsâ€

Edgy MD
Oct 02 2006 12:39 PM

I agree that, by temperament, pit bulls are not disposed to harm.

But they (a) are bred to develop a jaw that's an awesome weapon, (b) are put through traumatic depravations by unscrupulous breeders, and (c) are kept illegally throughout DC as weapons by people who don't care a whit for their neighbors (and not much for their dogs).

I don't blame the breed at all, but too many keepers that range from ignorant to reckless to sociopathic.

Together Again: Philly couple reunited with dog

Betsy and Richard Massaro along their dog, Frank, pose on the beach of Martha’s Vineyard near Cape Cod, Mass. Frank was lost during a Thanksgiving day accident near the Lock Haven exit on Interstate 80.

By MATT CONNOR - For The Express

Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, for which most people are completely unprepared.

You could scratch an instant lottery ticket and realize you’re a millionaire.

Or, you could be driving down a highway en route to a family member’s home for Thanksgiving dinner and your world could suddenly go topsy turvy.

That happened to Philadelphia-area residents Rich and Betsy Masarro last month, when they hit an icy patch of roadway and ended up crashing their Toyota Tacoma against the side of the rocky mountainside on Interstate 80 in southern Clinton County.

One moment they were full of happy anticipation, and the next they were beginning a 12-day ordeal of fear and loss and anxiety.

It was 2:15 p.m on Thanksgiving day, and Rich, Betsy and their beloved family pet, Frank, a German Shepherd-Pit Bull mix, were heading to dinner at the home of Betsy’s brother in DuBois when the collision occurred. The couple said they were lucky to have survived the accident, which totalled their vehicle and left them trapped in their overturned truck, hanging from their safety belts, for nearly 25 terrifying minutes.

“After the crash, once we came to our senses, that’s when we realized our dog was gone,â€

My father-in-law was watching him and like he has done since Mookie was a puppy, he let him out into his backyard. Unfortunately, Mookie didn't come back. He's been gone for close to a week now and were starting to feel as if we've lost him.

We got Mookie 11 years ago as a 6 week old pup. My wife and I had him before we had kids to 'test' ourselves as parents.

He became as much a part of our family - and extended family - as any of our kids. All of my neices and nephews have known Mook almost their whole lives.

Since we were on vacation my wife's family waited to tell us. Meanwhile they plastered my father-in-law's town with posters, searched everywhere and took out newspaper ads. No luck as yet.

We got home tonight and I'm going to see my father-in-law first thing in the morning tomorrow. In addition to being distraught for myself, I feel bad for my him as well. Since his wife of 50 years died last year, Mookie has been a great companion to him. Speaking to him on the phone for the first time ever I hear his voice cracking.

We are waiting to tell our kids in the hope that Mookie just meanders back sometime soon. My 9 year-old will be absolutely devastated.

I'm so upset I don't know what to do. I can't imagine how indescribly horrible it must be to be a parent that has a child go missing if this is how it feels to lose a freaking dog.

Mookie is a Dalmatian and he was lost in Middlebury, CT on December 28th.

Wearing all of his tags including his vaccines, his name and our phone number.

Very friendly to kids, not so much to adults he doesn't know.

He is listed on dogdetective.com and fidofinder.com.

He's a big white dog. Theoretically he should be easy to see.

Thanks again. Its nice knowing that people are concerned and want to help.

After the end of an exhaustive 3 day search today, we got a phone call that someone had found our beloved dog Mookie, dead in their backyard.

It was one block away from my father-in-law's house and he had been dead for quite some time. It looks as though he passed away peacefully the same night he went missing.

We are incredibly sad but take solace in the fact that he was never lost, scared or alone. He was 11 and lived a good life. He was well-loved and gave that love back to us. We will miss him dearly.

Thank you all so much for concern.

Yeah, me too. It was a tough few days just not knowing.

A friend of ours knew someone who is supposedly psychic and can communicate with animals. She was helping us try to find him. In retrospect it was a bit silly but during the time he was missing it helped us when we were searching. If I was in the middle of the woods and didn't know which way to go, she'd tell me 'south' and then at least I'd have a direction and someone making a decision.

She kept telling us he was alive but not responding to her. Without having ever seen him or a picture she told us he was wearing a purple collar which was true. She told us that he was not moving around, that he was staying put. That she saw the number '2', that he was covered in leaves and near a body of water and that there was a large gray house with big glass windows.

He was in the backyard of house whose address was '29', he was covered in leaves, he was close to a swimming pool next to a large gray house with big glass windows.

It could all be coincidence and maybe you can find similiarities anywhere if you want to find them but she was very nice and was genuinely concerned. She did miss the fact that he was dead which was kind of a big one.

I must have walked between 20-30 miles in the woods through bramble and thorns over the past 3 days. I'm scratched up and exhausted. We met and spoke to so many people who were so nice and concerned. That was very surprising to me.

We set out this morning saying we would bring him home today and we did. Don't tell anyone because its illegal, but we buried him in our backyard.

The kids have already chosen the name for the next dog - who won't be arriving anytime soon however. They like 'Wilson'. I'm good with that.

That seems to be the prevailing theory among the 'experts' we've spoken to over the past week.

Looking back on it there were some signs that he may not have been feeling too great recently.

He was born with a heart murmer but it never appeared to hamper him, he was always very active and rambunctious. Lately though he wouldn't run to the door to greet us as often as he always had, preferring to just continue laying down and wagging his tail instead. When playing with other dogs, he seemed to get winded and tire out much quicker that before.

My father-in-law the doctor figured a heart attack or a stroke.

Again thank you all for your sympathies.

Frayed Knot
Jan 04 2007 07:45 AM

I had a dog that (sorta) did that once.

As a pup we had a small protion of the yard fenced off for her to stay confined in until we were sure that she wouldn't run away. Then, once past those first few weeks as she started to grow and become trained, that section became her designated spot to go to the bathroom. Once finished she would come right out afterward and have full run of the yard.
Years later, after she started getting old and sick and talk of "putting her away" started to come into play, we couldn't find her one day. After looking in the usual spots, I found her laying down in that same fenced-off section where she never stayed with what I swear was a 'well, this is where I came in' look on her face.
We took her to the vet the next day.

Mook was neutered at about 6 months I think. Both of his parents were champion show dogs but he was the one puppy in the litter that was not considered 'show quality'. He didn't have enough spots on his back supposedly.

I thought I'd make some inquiries to see where the bloodline stood today and was trying to get in touch with the breeder we originally got him from 12 years ago but I haven't had luck.

Moving on.

Well, we broke down and got a dog this weekend. While Mookie will always be in our hearts, it was time to move on and be dog people once again.

We settled on a Chesapeke Bay Retriever. The breed is descended from Spaniels and Newfoundlands. Very common in Maryland around the um, Chesapeke Bay area. Short wavy coats that shed very little. Supposedly they love the water. The males can grow to about 100 pounds. She'll probably be about 65 or so which is around what Mook was.

She is 6 months old. We adopted her from a volunteer organization that rescues abandoned or unwanted 'Chessies'. The story goes that she was one of the last 2 of a litter from a breeder in Tennessee who either couldn't or didn't want to bother with selling them. He gave up Bucky, her sister and the sire.

We thought that Wilson ('Willy') was going to be our next dog's name but being a girl and all it just didn't seem to fit. So in keeping with the Game 6 theme we're going with 'Bucky' (Buckner) instead.

The kids are over the moon and she seems really, really sweet.

My little shih tzu is turning my house into a shit zoo.

It's not his fault. He does his little "I gotta go out" tapdance and I take him out. A little mush comes out and then he gets stopped up. He squats and squats and nothing comes.

I bring him home, and Ms. Edgy and I go out for a few hours, and then it comes. To his credit, he goes to the bottom of the stairs by the front door rather than a daintier area of the apartment (or Ms. Edgy would crucify the little mop).

I've got to find out what's constipating him. Meantime, we've dubbed the boottom of the stairwell "The Shit Pit."

Excerpts from a Cat's Daily Diary:

Day 683 of my captivity: My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the floor. Today, I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of.

However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. The audacity!

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today, I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded!

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe ....

........ for now...

"I assumed everyone in Boston was either for the Bruins or the Red Sox. So, what team do you root for?" the reporter asked.

"I'm a Yankees fan!" the child beamed. The reporter starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes:

Bucky Update:

She is now one year old (Nov. 22 we think) and is a very nice dog. A bit mouthy - she's chewed up a remote control and a cordless phone, ripped apart a pillow or two and gnawed at some wainscoating, but what can you do? She's still a puppy so we expect that to not be an issue as she gets older. We've been told that this breed stays puppy-like for as long as two years. Its part of the deal anyway. She's starting to figure out that the chew toys are what she's supposed to chomping on and she's causing much less structural damage to our home than she was a few months back.

She's got a strong personality and is always testing her limits. It's cute. She loves chasing squirrels and when she gets to socialize with other dogs she is ecstatic. Mookie didn't like other dogs.

Not the smartest dog in the world but she figured out the housebreaking thing really quickly. She's much better with people, and especially kids, than Mookie ever was.

The missus and I dig her, the kids love her, she fits in well.

Overall - a good acquisition.

We're going to be taking a major pet plunge soon after the New Year.

We've been dogless since 2001, and didn't want to get a puppy while we had an elderly cat in the house. It wouldn't have been far to Phoebe, who had tenure as senior pet.

We had promised the kids that we'd look into the idea of puppies and kittens once Phoebe had died. Now that time has come. Our current plan is a puppy and two kittens.

There's one thing I'm curious about. Phoebe was the last pet I'll ever have that I got before I became a parent. I wonder if I'll feel as strong a connection to any future pets now that I'm a dad. I'd imagine my perspective will be a bit different.

Can anybody who's adopted a cat or a dog both before and after becoming a parent offer any insight?

We had Mookie for about a year and a half before our first child was born.

I definitely feel differently towards Bucky than I did to him, but I think that's only because I haven't had her for 12 years. I don't think it has anything to do with caring more for my kids. As the years pass I'm sure I'll develop the same level of affection for her as I had for Mook.

Good luck with your dog. And two cats. What do you live on a freakin' farm or something?

Because you feel that now that your kids are older, their love for you is no longer unconditional and since you are so incredibly insecure you feel that you do not 'deserve' their love, so its easier for you to to 'bond' with the dogs?

Come. Have a seat.

For the first time in over six years, I once again have a dog. (The six-year dry spell came after about 29 years of continuous dogfulness.)

We adopted a rescue puppy yesterday afternoon. She's a mixed breed, estimated to be about three months old. The rescue people think she'll top out at about 45 pounds, but my hunch is it will be closer to 60. She looks like a Jack Russell terrier, which should, in theory, keep her size down a bit, but if she's really three months old her current size indicates that she'll be more than 45 pounds.

I guess we wait and see.

We named her Sophie. She's a sweet dog and seems to want to be obedient. When we take her outside she looks for a place to pee, which is a good sign; she prefers to go outside rather than indoors. She doesn't know yet that she can ask to go out. Once she learns that things should get a lot easier.

I was thinking how much things have changed since the last time I got a puppy, back in 1988. That time, I answered an ad in the newspaper, drove out to a farm outside of Lebanon, PA, and paid for my puppy with a check. I could have done the same thing back in 1930.

This time, we found a photo and description of the puppy on the Internet. We went to a rescue organization and paid with a credit card. And the puppy came with an instructional DVD! And we have the option to get her microchipped! How very 21st Century!

I'll post a photo here when I get a good one. I've taken a few photos of her from above, but that's not the best way to photograph kids or dogs. You need to get down on your knee (or lower) and get them from eye level. Problem is, when I try to do it with Sophie she gets curious and charges over to me to sniff the camera. I have a few blurry close-ups of her nose.

So Step One of the pet project is now complete. Next up, two kittens. That will be at least a couple of weeks off, once we get a good feel for our puppy's personality which will allow us to have a better plan for how to introduce the cats into the household.

soupcan
Mar 04 2008 07:58 PM

I think that the white part is part of your picture. Can you edit the pic to remove that space before you post it to Photobucket? What program are you using to edit the picture?

Rockin' Doc
Mar 04 2008 08:12 PM

Program? I have a picture, I have a scanner, and now I have an account with photobucket. I don't know about any photoediting program. I truthfully assumed that I would be able to do that on photobucket. Best I can tell, all I can do there is resize the imaga or rotate it.

You are right about the white being part of the image from the scanner. This is my first time using this scanner, I guess I will have to play with it some more. Or maybe I need to get a program to manipulate the images.

AG/DC
Mar 04 2008 08:17 PM

The scanner should have some basic software to edit the image, at least to trim away the blank space.. No way they are expecting you to live with the cover of your scanner as the background of all your images.

Another feature they should have is the opportunity to select the size of the area you want to scan. So if you have a 3x5 photo, place it in the corner of your scanner, and ask it to only scan 3x5.

Neither did I.

But I took a bunch this evening and if I can get my husband or son to load 'em up into the computer, I'll see if I can figure out how to post some.
They are stunning adorable.

There are four black and white spotted ones, one who is totally black, including his nose and paw pads, and one with curly black fur and a little white circle around his mouth. They all have blue eyes so far.

The one who we thought might not make it through the first night is the one who has been the first to do everything, walk, run, eat food, climb.
I guess she showed us who's a runt!

Their names are Apollo, Adolf, Zepphire, Zeppelin, Bamboo, and Marvin.

Kitties are 8 weeks old now. They are a lot of fun, if you don't mind a lot of noise, home destruction and um, smelly air.

But I wouldn't give them up for the world now.

Our little runt Zepphire was the first one to do everything. A tomboy like her mommy, Charley.

Marvin, all black, including his nose, paw pads, and lips. Very sweet, quiet and a loner.

Apollo, my little boyfriend. A blast of black moppy hair (part angora maybe?) little white paws and a white milk moustache. Only it's made of fur. The cutest cat I've ever seen. And loves to kiss me.

Adolph with the unfortunate little black moustache has a sweet face and you can't help but love her. Very gently and girly. Never in trouble.

Zeppelin is Adolph's twin brother. They look alike only he does not have moustache. He is my son's girlfriend's favorite and I find them cuddling a lot.

Bamboo, who has a white ring around his neck and his tail. Not sure where he is half the time but I'm sure he's up to no good. :)

They eat my plants, they beg food, they make me late for work, church, lunch with Mom and Sis.
My eyes are red, we spend $50 a week on food and litter, our furniture is a mess.
Our floors are littered with more little toys then the local daycare center.

But I can't ever remember having so much fun in 8 weeks.

Update on my babies...5 months old last Friday.

Nothing much has changed personality wise.

Marvin is as big as his mommy. Beautiful. Mysterious. Not a white hair on him.

Bamboo can't decide whether he wants to be a garbage man or a makeup artist when he grows up. A sweetheart who often wakes us up in the mornings.

Zepphire is still the littlest one, and still the most likely to cuddle up with me on the couch or in bed. Also has learned to meow for kisses.

Zeppelin doesn't like held but he is a dear and has the most soulful cry. He's been pretty sick lately.

Adolf is the sweetest little girl ever. Has to be invited to join in. Her little black nose makes me smile every time.

Apollo....no words can describe him. An absolute delight of a cat. The only time he doesn't purr is when he is sleeping, which is rare.

Charley and Lo, (mommy and daddy) are very proud and caring parents. If you ever have a chance to have an intact family of cats, I recommend it. It has been a challenge, a lot of work, a TON of money, but the pleasure of watching them interact as a family has been one of the best adventures of our lives.

What do you notice about the personalities of the cats as they interact within their family?

They are inside cats, and there are nine. Don't forget Aunt Gavin.

What do you notice about the personalities of the cats as they interact within their family?
They are very respectful of each other. They share, they don't fight over toys, food, water or us. They all seem to realize that they are safe and they are loved and they are comfortable with each other.
Their daddy, Lo, is a very good parent and he gives them baths, holds them during naps, makes sure they are safe and comes to us if he needs help.
Mommy Charley isn't as involved with them but she was just a baby herself when she had them. They were both less than one year old.

Who is dominant, who is submissive?
Marvin, our big black brown-eyed beauty, is dominant, but not at all aggressive. Same could be said for Lowie.
Adolf, the sweet little girly girl is submissive, but not to the point where she exasperates us.

Do the females have different 'roles' than the males? Not so far, except for the parents. Daddy seems to be more of a caretaker. It would be interesting to find out if that is typical in a housecat family.

If they are outside cats, do any of them hunt more than others.

My mother-in-law had a feral cat family in her backyard last summer. While it's fun watching kittens interact with each other and grow up, the "family" has turned into a full-blown colony, with three different litters of kittens living under the shed. We need to fix them all or find them homes, which has turned into a Herculean effort. A stitch in time would have definitely saved nine, although I can't really complain so much because we took one of the kittens in and she's really sweet.

PS Anybody want kittens? We've got orange ones, white and orange ones, a gray calico, a black calico, and there's another kitten in the area with some really funky coloring.

Sure, Lowie is a very expressive tomcat. He has a number of different little growls he makes, and also different facial expressions.

Some of the times he has alerted us to trouble was when one of the kitties was shut in a rarely used bedroom, and once when one was trapped in a kitchen cupboard.
Both times he tried frantically to open the doors before coming to get us. When Lowie has a alarmed look on his face and is meowing very loudly we know to coming checking, and then we find him trying to open doors with little mews coming out of them.

Often also, he wakes us up in the morning because the kitties need water.

Small stuff, I know, but he is a cat.

Batman bit our cat Gavvie his first night here and she literally almost died of infection.
However, after a $300 surgical procedure, she is on the mend and we have managed to figure out how to make four unrelated cats in one house work.
Luckily, it's a huge house, because both Batman (who we have really taken a shine to, despite) and Gavin have their own rooms with doors.

Bennie and Marnie are free to roam and sleep with Mommy and Daddy.

However, I am thinking of starting to wear turtlenecks, or at least a scarf, to bed because Bennies sleepytime ritual involves kneading my neck.

I tell myself, "at least this little soul loves me, some people have no one".
But I wonder what people think when they see my neck.

Felt the same way.

Then LeiterWagnerBetterHalf-er found her-- and a sister-- on the doorstep, apparently days/weeks old, and days after LWBH had been laid off from a much-beloved job. The orange-tabby sister-- we called her Toby-- was bouncy as all hell, and kind of adorable/puntable. After cleaning Toby and taking her for a checkup, we dropped her off at a no-kill (whence she was adopted within the day).

This other? A dirty-looking brown tabby, with more scratches and an eye swollen like she'd been married to Ike Turner, thanks to an eye infection. She kept to herself-- as opposed to her attention-seeking sister-- but still liked being touched. Hell, even after some antibiotics, she looked like a cat version of Sylvester Stallone at the end of the first "Rocky." After we nursed her back to health, she ended up a pretty self-maintaining, unbitchy little furball. So, yeah... I have a friggin' cat.

We named her London, because we used to travel there a bit, and her meow sounded weirdly Cockney.

I'm not, like, happy about it or anything.

So because of the snow, Skipper's examination was delayed until today. X-rays showed fluid collecting around her lungs, they drained some of it so she can breathe better but won't know exactly what's causing it or how to treat it at least till the tests come back.

The cat got an enema and his works got to working. No internal problems that the vet could see...most likely age and lack of hydration causing the backup. She gave me some stool softner and said to add more water to his wet food. Total bill was only $200. I'm just as relieved as the cat is.

Re: Pet Thread

So, they put my crazy dog under to clean his teeth, and they discover an infected abcess, built up in a fracture we never discovered, from a violently traumatic injury that predates our relationship with him. I never stomached well people waxing on about the miserable life they think their dog had before they took him in, and I don't think of myself as one who gets overly empathetic with his animals, but now I half want to cry every time I look at him, and I feel for the fractured part of his face every time I pet him.

It's awful. And he's still behaving like a monster.

Re: Pet Thread

They removed the abcess and aren't quite sure what it was that drained from it. The fracture itself, they insist, isn't painful. But it sure explains why he's the most skittish thing ever.

We took him to the nursing home, and he was a good little guy, letting all these wheelchair bound strangers hold him and licking their noses as they snuggled, but if somebody is folding sheets and flaps them, he jumps up and starts screaming, "YOU THINK YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH THAT SHIT, MOTHERFUCKER?! JUST TRY IT! JUST TRY IT! I'LL TEAR YOUR FUCKING HEAD OFF!! I SWEAR TO GOD, JUST TRY IT!! I'M NOT KIDDING!! JUST TRY IT, MOTHERFUCKER!!!

Whichever one of us he's not mad it sneaks up behind, flips him on his back and gently dominates him until he calms down, he catches his breath after a minute or two, and then grumps off into a corner, and maybe comes sniveling back to apologize ten minutes later. But it's total Jeckyl and Hyde shit from a 20-pound maniac. The other day he was on my bed. I climbed in and he got all threatened by me flapping up the covers to get under them. He did one of his profanity laced flipouts and I was on my back and a little too poorly positioned to grab him without moving so fast that I'd hurt myself or more likely him. Pathetic, but I had to call for my wife. No more bed for him.

The vet assures us that he's not carrying regular pain from the fracture, but the psychotrauma is another issue. She says it's very rare to see aggression from his breed. It's a good thing we don't have any kids in the house.

I'm totally in an abusive relationship.

Is it just flapping sheets and the like that gets him crazy?

Our dog cowers from just the slightest movement from an adult and is incredibly timid. We adopted her when she was about 6 months old and to our knowledge had not had a regular 'home' until us. I assume that she was hit and/or abused by someone somewhere down the line but fortunately she never shows any aggression.

In all the craziness of the last week (my trip to Vegas, the ALS fundraising event, Lunchpail's raucous and well-attended bday party, relatives coming to stay, dumping my dad's ashes at Jones Beach as was his last request, etc etc) we were also dealing with the disappearance of our cat Skipper, who apparently slipped out the front the door when the grandparents were watching the boy last week while I was away. We wound up plastering the hood with posters, I skipped out from work to follow up on a lead last Friday only to find that my neighbors had found a different black-and-white cat; I can't tell you how defeating that was. Considering her recent health troubles, we assumed that maybe she'd gone off to die, that's what the vet thought.

This morning Wifey Bucket was home trying to track down our car, which was either stolen or towed when inadvertently parked illegally (turns out it was the latter, and on a day when alternate side was suspended... d'oh!) when she walked out front to see a dirty Skipper hanging around the front door, eight days after walking out of it.

We let her out in the back all the time but never out front unless she escapes, there's basically no way to get out back without going through the house, so she was in unfamiliar territory. They say that cats generally don't wander more than a block or two from home. We figure she must have crossed the street and got into the backyards on that side.

There were a few chilly, windy and rainy nights she spent out there and I've never seen her so dirty, but she's OK I guess.

That happened to us: ticket was written improperly (we weren't parked illegally) and they towed us anyway. Win the ticket, get the $$ back from the tow, and then file the complaint against the officer writing the improper ticket.

Next time you kill a mousy, please take him somewhere that we can pick him up and throw him away, instead of behind something unmoveable in the basement so that we have to smell it for the next three weeks.
Thank you!

Give me the strength to tell the vet to come over and euthanize Skipper. I've never had to make a call like this before.

She's lost a ton of weight, become all bony on her back, and her whole chest is heaving when she breathes. Medication hasn;t much helped and 2K in vet bills couldn't determine why.

But she still has that spunk to rub up against you when you're sitting, and to demand food out of the fridge, and to climb up on the table to lick plates the second you're not looking like always.

Vet hasn't seen her in a few months, tho he definitely wants us to make the call. He was the first to determine her breathing issues and knows there has been a problem, but he's like, I can't do much to improve her, so...

It's really just a matter of when you pull the plug, it's gonna hafta be pulled at some point.

If she still has that spunk and isn't in too much pain, you don't have to make the call just yet. If it gets to the point that she's living in pain, though, then calling the vet will be the right thing to do.

Sorry to hear it, man. Good for Skipper that she went when she was ready you didn't have to make the choice. When my girl was dying, I sorta wanted to, but was torn and had to tell the vet that I wanted to do everything we could to keep her alive, but know I'm not a rich man, either. So that's a bad deal, and we're happy to step in and give her a loving home. But we really got bait-and-switched, as we agreed to adopt her on Wednesday, but it wasn't until we picked her up on Sunday that we found out (1) She was not eight but ten, (2) she had a nice little array of health needs, (3) her papers showed the same name appearing more than once in her family tree, and (4) she was (unsprisingly) born with a mutation or two.

Crystal, our cat of 15 years was acting very lethargic and weak yesterday morning. As the day wore on it was apparent something was seriously wrong with her. My wife and I decided to take her in to the Emergency Veterinary Clinic for evaluation. We had to leave her overnight for testing and evaluation. I just finished speaking with the doctor and learned that tests show that Crystal is now a severe diabetic. We will have to give her a insulin injection twice a day and start her on a very special diet. The clinic will keep her overnight to get her blood glucose levels better controlled, but she is apparently feeling much better today. The ER Vet stated that Crystal is far more energetic and is now giving the staff a hard time when it is time for her injections. I told the vet that she has a reputation for being fractious with the staff at her regular veterinary office. She told me that Crystal now has a reputation at two clinics for being ill tempered with the staff. Well, at least I know she is feeling better now.

Well about 10 months following the tragic demise of Skipper we catted up again.

Saturn and Mars came from the North Shore Animal League shelter. Saturn is a splotchy grey, black and white, 4 months old, absolutely captured us when we walked in the room. Very friendly and charming, so it was a choice of him and whoever of the others he got along with best.

Wifey picked out Mars, a tiny tan/orange tabby who was only 8 or 10 weeks old. They are getting used to the place now, after finding their way underneath and behind most of the furniture in the house. So far they seem to get along OK, Mars gives up a lot of weight and experience to Saturn but definitely isn't intimidated. Saturn has a corneal scratch giving his right eye a cloudy, glossy look.

Oh, they've got them. Four of them in fact.

She was just running and turned on it - snap!

The dog surgeon (!) sez that it is a very common injury for dogs of any size. In fact Bucky's was the fourth ACL surgery he did that day. If she was a 12-13 year-old dog, We wouldn't have gotten it done. But she's only 4 and a really great dog and we just couldn't conceive of watching her limp and seeing her leg atrophy from non-use for the next ten years. Sucks and if she snaps another one (which the doctor sez is a 50% possibility (double '!') then she's gonna be stuck with that injury because I got real kids and they want to go to college.

Cat herpes though? Yeesh.

Re: Pet Thread

Last Tuesday, Crystal lost her battle against the ravages of age and diabetes. She had recovered from her lethargy and weakness in early August, when we first discovered she had become diabetic. She allowed me to give her insulin injections twice a day without any drama or fuss. Within days of her returning home, she was basically her same old self. Then last Saturday, she quit eating and her strength and energy faded away at an alarming rate. By Sunday evening, she could no longer support herself to walk. Our beloved cat was dying right before our eyes and we could do nothing to help her. We rushed her to the vet as soon as they opened on Monday morning. They determined that she had developed a bacterial kidney infection which caused her to become dehydrated and made her blood glucose level sky rocket, resulting in her rapidly declining health. Her veterinarian was quite optimistic that with IV antibiotics and fluids, Crystal would once again regain her strength and return home with us. Unfortunately, that was not the case as her health continued to decline as her kidneys started to shut down. By morning she was virtually comatose and it was readily apparent to me that she would never return home with us. The time had come to say goodbye and end her suffering.*

*I waited to post this sad update until I had the opportunity to travel to Charlotte this past weekend to exchange laptops with my daughter and inform her that that Crystal was gone. She had grown up with the cat and often referred to Crystal as her “little sister”. I didn’t want her to learn of Crystal’s passing by stumbling across a post on the CPF while using my computer which has the CPF as the home page.

If he wasn't eating today, we would have needed to take him back in for a steroid injection that would have stimulated his appetite. But, he's coming around on his own.

The sparkle is slowly returning back to his eyes, so I'm thankful. He had lost a couple of pounds (down to nine) during the ordeal and last night while petting him, I could feel most of his skeleton which was alarming. He's 14, which I suppose is old enough, but he still has the spunk of a younger adult cat most of the time...so I don't ever think of him being that old.

He finally went and hid under the futon in the sunroom where we were able to extract what was left of the bag.

If we put ice in the cat water dish, our cats freak out and bat at it with their paws, making a mess. But we are keeping it cool to prevent algae from growing wild in there.

Has anyone owned a snake? I'm sure I'll forget this dumb idea before actually getting one but just curious if anyone had any experience with them.

Beware them if they come bearing fruit.

Re: Pet Thread

My post-college roommate had a snake. She kept packages of mice in the freezer to feed the snake. They were packaged nose to tail and kind of looked like Peeps. And then when she had to feed the snake she warmed up the mouse in a double-boiler on the stove. Yes, I know the smell of boiled mouse. Then the snake escaped and was never found. Apparently snakes are really good at escaping.

I enjoyed the absence of double-boiled mouse aroma in the apartment, that's for sure.

Re: Pet Thread

We have had both dead snakes and dead mice in our living room, killed by our pet cats. Now that's bringing the thread all back together.

Nymr83, my husband once wanted to get a snake (a boa!) early in our marriage but I was reluctant. Thank god. We have enough of them in our back yard and basement to keep us both happy now.

Agreeing with Willets that the smell of cooking mice isn't real pleasant.

Re: Pet Thread

Shows what I know, I thought you made weekly trips to the pet store to pickup a live mouse or goldfish for a smaller snake. A friend had those little brown snakes you find in your yard (Garden Snake? Garter Snake? I dunno) all it ate was live minnows right from its waterbowl, and an idiot could handle it safely... I guess that's barely a real snake?

Cats last night were really excited playing with something they found on the ground, taking it their mouths, running all over the house, batting it with their paws, etc.

It was a giant live cockroach.

I was gonna comment on how disgusting that is and that cats are vile, but then I remembered the dead, bloody vole that my dog dropped on our front porch earlier this summer.

Bennie always gets glum when he knows I am going away, and I could never figure out how he knew. Today it dawned on me--he sees me putting on makeup.

PS, both stories above, yuck!

I have been promising Bennie all day long that I would take him out to help me chart my garden before it dies back for winter...I finally took him out and five minutes later I came across a bat crawling around by the pool and had to take him back in.

Poor little bat didn't seem to be able to fly. He was scary but I put him in the woods and he is climbing a tree. He grrrred at me.

Bennie not happy but oh well.

I always imagine cooby as Snow White, singing in the forest while charming all of the woodland creatures in her midst.

Kinda, only I don't like gnomes and I don't wear dresses in the woods.
