How big a loser do you have to be to eat 52 hot dogs in 12 minutes and lose?

If ESPN considers this a sport, I wonder why they didn't cover the post- eating contest barfing contest.

Was this at Nathan's on Coney Island or something else?

Speaking of ESPN and "sports" I was amused that when one of the World Cup QF games went to overtime they put a ticker on the bottom to warn viewers that the Paintball championship would be postponed.

The guy that finished second( Chesnut?) looked like he was pushing back vomit every time he shoved a dog into his mouth for most of the contest....

Hell, they had dominoes on ESPN2 a little while back.

I've seen Scrabble, too.

"Crazy Legs" Conti, professional eater, was on with Mike & Mike in the Morning on ESPN Radio this morning -- he gave a very, very funny interview. Doesn't make me want to watch a competition, but at least he understands the humor of his chosen "profession."

There's a joke in here somewhere about choking in big moments.

From it's inception, ESPN has always carried off beat sports (Australian Rules Football) or contests in order to fill their programming. Their name itself denotes their chosen programmimg, Entertainment SPorts Network.

Still, I'm not sure that eating contests and dominoes necessarily apply. I guess sport, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. One man's sport is another man's freak show (or snore fest).

Now that they're getting "real" sports most of the pretend sports will be on SNY

Dominoes; it's the next poker.

The "success" of their poker programming (now grossly over-exposed and copied) has sent ESPN hurtling towards dominoes, Scrabble, spelling bees, and the like in search of the "next" poker.
It's all just programming filler for them anyway and they've had lotsa slots to fill where the NHL used to be over the past two years.

The NHL was filler too.

A hockey fan wouldn't say that but the ratings say otherwise.

Either way, the NHL still took up 2 nights a week for 6 months plus more when the playoffs rolled around and now that's gone and has been replaced by fat guys playing cards and repeats of the same fat guys playing cards.

I'm pretty sure that you're correct. I was trying to get the post done before heading back to the office from lunch. I knew that something didn't quite sound right, but in my haste I sent it through.

ESPN seemed to hit the programming jackpot with Poker, so I'm not surprised that they would give games such as Scrabble and Dominoes a shot to see if they can create another ratings coup. I'm awaiting Backgammon World Championships, it's only a matter of time before it get's it shot. The television rights for such events is minimal, so i would imagine that it is much cheaper to do broadcasts of poker, dominoes, billiards, etc. than to show MLB, NFL, NBA, MLB etc. Almost anything beats seeing the same Sportcenter broadcast 5-6 times in a 12 hour period.

I remember when Charles Goren had a Bridge show on tv.
It actually got me interested in the game and I've been playing it for over 40 years. But I wouldn't exatly call it a sport. And as entertainment, its kinda' dull.
