Rollins homers and Pedro's down 1-0.

Elster88
Jun 30 2005 01:37 PM

I feel like the majority of Pedro's ER come off of HR.

Frayed Knot
Jun 30 2005 01:38 PM

Pratt is the Phils' only RHB against Pedro today (prolly Leiber also) as Manuel stacks the lineup and sits Burrell

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 30 2005 01:38 PM

At least we know that Beltran will be hitting a homer today.

We do know that, don't we?

Elster88
Jun 30 2005 01:47 PM

Bottom 2ND B:2 S:2 O:0
Philadelphia Phillies catcher Todd Pratt ejected by HP umpire Alfonso Marquez.

Can someone explain?

Gwreck
Jun 30 2005 01:48 PM

Arguing checked-swing calls apparently. Manuel got tossed after argument too.

Jun 30 2005 01:49 PM

That wouldn't have happened back in the old days.....

Edgy DC
Jun 30 2005 01:58 PM

Woodie puts the Mets ahead with a two-run single after being down 0-2.

Sweet stuff.

metirish
Jun 30 2005 01:59 PM

Woodie is a good hitter, goes up to bat with a clue.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 30 2005 02:00 PM

Pedro batting, and on the second pitch the ball is put in play with no out recorded.

That's all I know at the present time.

seawolf17
Jun 30 2005 02:01 PM

That's weird. Sportsline says the first two pitches to Pedro were both balls, up and in.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 30 2005 02:01 PM

It looks like he reached base on a sacrifice bunt.

It was called a sacrifice, and not a hit, so maybe an error was made on the play.

Reyes up, bases loaded, one out, 2-1 Mets.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 30 2005 02:02 PM

Reyes forces Wright at home.

Two out.

seawolf17
Jun 30 2005 02:03 PM

Come on, Cammy. Break this baby wide open.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 30 2005 02:03 PM

And Cameron strikes out to end the inning.

seawolf17
Jun 30 2005 02:04 PM

Or strike out. Whatever.

Could we deal Cameron before he wakes up and remembers he's a career .250 hitter?

Elster88
Jun 30 2005 02:05 PM

At what point is it okay to experiment with Woody as the full time first baseman?

Edgy DC
Jun 30 2005 02:08 PM

Another time.

Is that a pullback by Floyd?

seawolf17
Jun 30 2005 02:17 PM

And just like that, Cliff Floyd is now the 41st-most-stealingest Met of all time, tied with Brett Butler, Chico Walker, and Ron Hunt at 21.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 30 2005 02:21 PM

As the fourth inning begins, Pedro's already thrown 55 pitches.

I think he usually has a higher pitch count in the earlier innings, and then moves swiftly through the middle innings.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 30 2005 02:29 PM

Bottom of the 4th, Woodward doubles with none out and Wright on first (after a HBP.)

I think Woodward is due for some Schaefer.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 30 2005 02:30 PM

And Jose's ninth triple brings home Wright and Woody.

seawolf17
Jun 30 2005 02:31 PM

And Cameron brings home Jose.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 30 2005 02:31 PM

EVERYBODY hits!

Frayed Knot
Jun 30 2005 02:31 PM

Looks like both ends of the Philly battery is going to have themselves a short afternoon as Reyes hits his signature play (3-bagger) to knock in 2, and then gets singled in by Cammy.
Leiber is already up over 80 pitches w/only 1 out in the 4th and on the short end of a 5-1 game.

Frayed Knot
Jun 30 2005 02:32 PM

Or ... he can get Beltran to bang into a GiDP and get out of the inning quickly.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 30 2005 02:33 PM

Everybody except Beltran, that is.

Inning-ending DP.

Edgy DC
Jun 30 2005 02:34 PM

First person to call Carlos "Foster" is going to get such a pinch.

Rotblatt
Jun 30 2005 02:59 PM

I say we give Petey the ball in the 7th. He's at 99 pitches, but it's the bottom of the order and our pen could use an extra inning's rest.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 30 2005 02:59 PM

Mets lead 5-2 after 6.

Pedro's thrown 99 pitches. Let's hope he has two more good innings in him. (Three would be better, but my guess is that Pedro's max for this game will be eight innings.)

seawolf17
Jun 30 2005 03:01 PM

Gotta get Looper an inning in this game; he hasn't pitched since Sunday. He'll pitch the ninth no matter what.

Rotblatt
Jun 30 2005 03:03 PM

We're all overruled. Diaz in to pinch hit for him with 2 outs and no one on.

Edgy DC
Jun 30 2005 03:07 PM

Edgy DC
Jun 30 2005 03:07 PM

So they're in the home pinstripes and blue caps, right?

seawolf17
Jun 30 2005 03:11 PM

Maybe he can come back into the game, Sports Guy-column style:

Gary Cohen: So it's 2-2 on the pinch-hitter Burrell. Bases are loaded, and Aaron Heilman is scuffling.
Howie Rose: Aaron Heilman has not looked good today, Gary.
Gary: No, no, he hasn't -- wait! What's that?! That's Pedro Martinez's music!
PA System: (plays generic salsa music)
Howie: Here he comes!
Pedro: (comes running out of the dugout with a bat, cracks Heilman over the head and grabs the ball)
Gary: He's gonna come back in the game!
Howie: Burrell is stunned!
Gary: And here's the pitch... freezes him! Strike 3! The ballgame is over! Pedro picks up a win and a save in the same game!

Edgy DC
Jun 30 2005 03:16 PM

Jam.

End.

Now!

Rotblatt
Jun 30 2005 03:17 PM

Willie, can you please please please let your pitchers work and stop trying to be so cute?

It's the seventh inning and we were only up by 3 runs. Why burn one of your better relievers on just two batters? Plus:

Bell against lefties: 12.1 IP, 13 H, 3 BB, 10 K, 1 HR. That's better than he's done against righties.

Ring against lefties (before today): 5 IP, 4 H, 4 BB, 5 K, 0 HR.

Let's try and win the ballgame, Willie. Come on.

seawolf17
Jun 30 2005 03:19 PM

The double play... the pitcher's best friend. GET UP and stretch.

Rotblatt
Jun 30 2005 03:21 PM

And for all that, Ring gets Abreu to ground into a double play.

Nicely done, Royce!

5-3 Mets heading into the bottom of the 7th.

So does Ring stay in for the eighth? Rollins has a harder time versus lefties . . .

seawolf17
Jun 30 2005 03:27 PM

Beltran stole two bases! I didn't know he could steal bases.

(sarcasm mode turned off)

seawolf17
Jun 30 2005 03:28 PM

Cliffy walks. First and third. Let's steal one more, Cliffy.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 30 2005 03:30 PM

Stealing third with two out: doesn't that violate Conventional Wisdom?

Rotblatt
Jun 30 2005 03:30 PM

Nah, just threaten to steal, Cliff. Keep a nice hole between 1st & 2nd for Piazza to ground the ball through. And distract the pitcher!

Chase Utley walks.

When are our pitchers going to learn that walks are highly likely to kill us?

Yancy Street Gang

Jun 30 2005 03:43 PM

Shit, man, this sucks.

Loopy v. lefties: 13 IP, 19 H, 7 BB, 4 HR, 4 K, 2.00 WHIP, .322 BAA.

Even if Robo gets us out of the current jam, Loopy's got his work cut out for him in the 9th . . .

holychicken
Jun 30 2005 03:45 PM

I do love double plays. . . but I don't like the numbers rotblatt just posted. . .

seawolf17
Jun 30 2005 03:46 PM

Looper vs.

Tomas Perez: 2-9, 2B, 2 K
Mike Lieberthal: 7-16, 2 2B, BB, 2 K
David Bell: 3-11, 3 BB, 1 K (Bell is the only player left on the bench)

I'll take my chances in the ninth. Plus, Lieberthal and Bell are both righties.

Yancy Street Gang
Jun 30 2005 03:48 PM

Hernandez threw one pitch.

I think he can start the ninth inning.

holychicken
Jun 30 2005 03:49 PM

Rotblatt
Jun 30 2005 03:51 PM

Good call, seawolf. I posted before the DP--now things look a little better for Loopy.

Jun 30 2005 03:52 PM

Pitch 5 - Foul
Kenny Lofton grounds out, shortstop Jose Reyes to first baseman Chris Woodward.

Jun 30 2005 03:58 PM

Nicely done, Loopy!

seawolf17
Jun 30 2005 03:58 PM

Give that man a Schaefer point! 2 out of 3, 2 out of 3, 2 out of 3. Slowly coming together.

Yancy Street Gang

I did. GameDay seemed to skip over Michaels.

Who says Loopy doesn't ever get 1-2-3 innings? (I mean, aside from all the radio callers sure to chime in next time he doesn't)

ScarletKnight41
Jun 30 2005 04:12 PM

The SBS applauds the CPF for playing the negative Karma perfectly with Looper coming in for the 9th ;)

MFS62
Jun 30 2005 04:31 PM

I can just hear the sports talk callers on the radio now:
"Beltran only steals bases when Pedro starts".

We're just learning how to implement the reverse jinx. Someday, we will use its power for good, like the SoSH folks did.

Frayed Knot
Jun 30 2005 05:01 PM

Use its power for good?
You mean that if we go around saying; "oh these fuckers are gonna blow this one for sure", that in 86 years (or, I guess 86 minus 19 and counting by now) we too we win the World Series?

Nymr83
Jun 30 2005 05:59 PM

i was there today, great game.

Beltran could have moonwalked home from 3rd and stolen the plate easily.

that shift against Floyd is STUPID.

Elster88
Jun 30 2005 07:15 PM

They had the shift on with a runner on third? Will someone explain to me now why he didn't bunt the ball up the third base line? Unless he's the crappiest bunter ever, Nymr is right, Beltran could crawl home and Floyd would easily make it to first.

Frayed Knot
Jun 30 2005 10:13 PM

Cliff did bunt for a basehit earlier in the game against the shift ... nice bunt too.
The problem w/the time where Carlos was on 3rd was that he didn't get there (via his 2nd consect stolen base) until there were 2 strikes on Cliff w/2 outs. Bunting unsuccessfully there w/your best power hitter would look really effing stupid.
And - even though Carlos could lead halfway down the line w/that shift on - it's virtually impossible to steal home w/a righty pitcher and lefty hitter unless the pitcher is stupid enough to deal from the full windup.

Ah, I didn't realize there were two strikes by the time Carlos got there.

I agree with your opinion on the chances of stealing home too, I wasn't advocating that, just the bunt itself.
