2nd straight game where the Mets score a run without a hit in the first:

Reyes walks (!) steals second, crosses to 3rd on a grounder and draws a balk with his galloping along the line to score.

We went 1-2-3 otherwise.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 08 2005 07:31 PM

Anderson doubles on a hard shot to right that Lawton should've caught.

Castro retired on a hard shot to left that Bay shouldn't have caught.

Seeing as I'm the only guy here, be sure to watch Bay's catch to-nite on the hi-lites.

Arrrrgh.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 08 2005 07:59 PM

Vagina Boy cruises thru the 4th, suffering his first hit on a bogusly caled double that Floyd oughta have caught.

1-0 still, 1 hit each.

seawolf17
Jul 08 2005 08:50 PM

I thought I was the only one who remembered the "Vagina Boy" nickname. Reyes boots a grounder and there are two on, two out in the bottom of the 7th, but Jack Wilson K's to end it. Wish I started Zambrano this week.

And BTW, a belated first

of the year for Castro.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 08 2005 08:51 PM

still the only guy here?

Castro goes ka-blam, as do all the Met fielders, making this excellent outing for Zambrano considerably more strenuous than necessary.

After 7: 3-1 good guys, Zambrano 4 hits (2 w/o hometown scoring), 3 K's, 1 BB, about 100 pitches.

I think I invented Vagina Boy

MFS62

Zambrano has pretty much proved himself to me by this time.

Two force outs from Wright to Joel Cairo.

TheOldMole
Jul 08 2005 09:03 PM

And he uses all the park to get out number three -- great catch by Beltran.

seawolf17
Jul 08 2005 09:07 PM

Zambrano is our second-best starting pitcher right now. Without question.

Vagina Boy comes from the mnemonic JD created to remember the Mets' rotation when the season began: The VB (which stood for Victor-Benson, I believe) was at the end, but I don't remember what the full five-word mnemonic was.

Castro with a big RBI single up the middle, and it's going to be a tough call between Castro and Zambrano for the PotG.

TheOldMole

It's gotta be Z-man.

A very nice couple of insurance runs here.

TheOldMole
Jul 08 2005 09:20 PM

Daubach making a bid to stay on the team.

Yet another Met baserunning blunder, but not in a critical situation.

seawolf17
Jul 08 2005 09:20 PM

And then Castro decides not to run on a Daubach double off the wall and gets thrown out at the plate. Nuts. Ramon, listen to Manny Acta, will you?

Edgy DC
Jul 08 2005 09:20 PM

Daubach pinch-hits for Zambrano.

Standing O for Zammy.

Daubach doubles but Castro gets killed at the plate doing his "Be like Mike" routine.

Johnny Dickshot

Castro is absolutely ripping the ball tonight but he's the worst baserunner on the Mets since.... Payton?

MFS62
Jul 08 2005 09:48 PM

Castro didn't score because he couldn't see the ball hit the wall.
He had a vision problem.
His head was so far up his ass that his eyes were blocked.

BTW- where was the third base coach?
I saw the replay on tv and when Castro rounded third, the coach wasn't anywhere in the picture.
I think Randolph was madder at the coach than he was at Castro.

If the Mets lose this game, fire the coach.

The amount of flat-out lousy plays by the Mets in this game is really staggering and we were fortunate not to let them get to us till now.

Errors or shoulda been errors by Reyes, Anderson, Cameron, Floyd, shit baserunning by Castro, ineffective relief pitching by Heilman & Looper, ohfers by Cameron & Floyd.

Now we have to face Bay to lead off the 10th.

I'm switching to Minolta.

MFS62
Jul 09 2005 08:08 AM

This one kept me thinking about it all night.
One question kept coming up:
Why?

Why did Castro stop at third base and look back?
He's been playing ball for (obviously) more than20 years. And from day 1, I'll bet he was told to look for and trust the third base coach in similar situations.

So, the question remains, why did he stop and look back?

The only thing I can think of is that he couldn't find the coach when he looked for him. And, y'know what? When I review the tv shots (including replays) in my mind, I don't remember seeing the third base coach either.

In the heat of the game, it can sometimes be excusable for a player to make a mental mistake.
But not for a coach. That is the only thing they get paid to do - make in-game decisions and relay information to the player.
I know it is more Steinbrenner's style, but if Wilpon/ Omar had any gonads, and wanted to demonstrate that these are a "new" Mets, then Manny Acta is on a plane out of Pittsburgh, and out of the organization, this morning.

This was a humiliating loss, and someone's got to pay.

I don't know how something like that could happen to a professional base-

i am so happy that I fell asleep a little after 8, because I was so worn out yesterday.

Edgy DC
Jul 09 2005 10:14 AM

From the New York Times:

]Even though Ramon Castro hit his first home run of the season on Friday, and even though the Mets added two runs in the ninth inning, Castro could not sneak that extra run across. More galling, he could not score from second base on a double after he slowed down, thinking the third-base coach Manny Acta was telling him to stop when Acta was actually giving the sign to Cairo, the trailing runner. Castro was easily thrown out at the plate.

"I thought it was for me," Castro said of the sign from Acta. "It was a mistake. It was my mistake."

There's nothing in scapegoating that displays the presence of "gonads." Quite the opposite.

It took a lot players to lose yesterday.

Edgy DC

Bret Sabermetric
Jul 09 2005 11:42 AM

Hey, shit happens. Good teams lose a third of their games. It's a long season. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. It's a marathon, not a sprint. You're never as good as you think you are when you're winning, and never so bad as you think you are when you're losing. Ballplayers are humans, and humans make mistakes--the idea is to learn from the mistakes you make.

Johnny Dickshot
Jul 09 2005 11:44 AM

The Castro one is the killer, since all the others, more or less, were cases of guys not getting it done physically. If Castro scores we're presumably still batting.

Oh hell. I will try and speak no longer of this game.

Frayed Knot
Jul 09 2005 01:48 PM

A glimpse of Acta was seen in one of the shots, he was considerably down the line which is where coaches usually are in those situations. Couldn't see what he was doing at that moment. What it sounds like is that Cairo was running up Castro's ample butt due to Ramon's initial mis-reading of the hit in the first place. Acta was probably in the midst of a 'you go - but YOU stop' pantomime which led to Castro's second mis-reading in the span of 10 seconds or so.

All I know is that one night's sleep and one long bike ride later and I'm still pissed off.

That's the last thing to be concerned about, esp considering Jose has done more than his share tearing up the basepaths and taking walks the past couple of days.

Can we lay off Willie? Can any of this game really be considered his fault?
