The pitching reports are purely cut 'n' paste, I couldn't live with myself if I didn't give credit

The history of the name is a great little tidbit.

That would only work if the series took place on September 19th.

I always liked the old-style square caps:

I think Stargell used to give them out as 'rewards' for good plays and/or good games. Like college football helmets with stickers.
|
cooby Jul 08 2005 12:32 PM |
That is correct, they were Stargell Stars

Good to see this Pittsburgh team carrying on the tradition of earlier Pirate teams; namely stocking their staffs with one-syllable named pitchers

As a kid, I enjoyed how they had a Winn and a Wynne (pitcher Jim and outfielder Marvell, respectively) -- as well as a Winn and a Walk (pitcher Bob).

There's a guy in our Pittsburgh office who's a die-hard Pirates fan but hates Willie Stargell with a passion. For the same kind of reason that some Mets fans hate Seaver...he had a number of encounters with him over the years, all of them negative. He once attended a Willie Stargell bobblehead doll giveway at PNC...and proceeded to throw the bobblehead right into the river.

lol, that's pretty funny
