U.S. Supreme Court shocker.

Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court, announced today that she is resigning....

Justice O'Connor, 75, is widely viewed as the critical swing vote on abortion, affirmative action and other hot-button issues that have divided the court, and her departure is sure to ignite a passionate ideological battle throughout the summer.

Her departure, which had been the subject of rumors for weeks but was still a surprise, will give President Bush his first opportunity to name a justice to the Supreme Court.

I think this could get ugly.

I'm not shocked. Justice O'Connor has had health problems in recent years, IIRC.

I wish her a peaceful and enjoyable retirement.

I thought Rehnquist would go if anyone, incredibly Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is high on Bush's list.

A lot of columnists had suggested she would retire before the Chief Justice.

A list of candidates,

How do I get my name on that list?

I'm job hunting anyway, so I might as well throw my hat in the ring.

You may remember how close I was to being named pope a few months ago.

(sigh) And much like when the Pope died, I'm not even on the candidate list.

Age: 29
Graduated from: SUNY Geneseo, Long Island University
He clerked for: your mama.
He used to be: Producer of the short-lived Joan Hildebrand Show on WHAM 1180 in Rochester, NY.
He's now: Searching Connecticut for the best students and stealing them away to a major research university on Long Island.

His confirmation battle: Seawolf is basically a nobody in this race. He's never judged anything, although he does have extensive training and practice as a counselor. A little too left-leaning for the Republicans, not crazy enough for the Democrats.

Civil Rights and Liberties: All for them. Thinks the Patriot Act is crap, thinks gay marriage is A-OK.

Separation of Church and State: Yes.

Environmental Protection and Property Rights: Very pro-environment. Enjoys having air and natural resources; endorses replacing Montana and parts of Wyoming into "giant solar panels so we can heat the whole country."

Criminal Law: Against criminals of most kinds. Thinks OJ did it.

Abortion: Has strong feelings, but would "rather not go there at this time," because he "doesn't want the CPF to get too political."

Judicial Philosophy: Taking what he calls a "laissez-faire" judicial approach, Seawolf says he would "certainly not spend all that much time writing long, tedious decisions like the rest of these buckos. Two, three paragraphs and I'm out of there."

Riggins should be on the list of potential nominees.

I know he was a Super Bowl MVP and all, but Supreme Court Justice? Seems a bit much.

"Ask Riggo" is one helluva talk radio segment on Thursdays during football season.

If his decisions were anywhere near those answers, he'd have to be nominated for the comedy factor alone.

We need one of those NCAA-type posters, like we had for the Pope.

Too late for brackets. The nominee is U.S. Circuit Court Judge John Roberts, Jr..

Why does it matter? Either way he's not a W.A.S.P.

That means he was also eligible to be elected pope.

He missed out on that, but the Supreme Court is a nice consolation prize.

If you're looking for something to watch at 8:00 tonight, catch the rebroadcast of last night's The Daily Show on Comedy Central. Jon Stewart was very funny in discussing Judge Roberts.

My favorite part was when some talking head described Roberts as being nicer than Justice Scalia. Stewart opined that statement was the equivalent of referring to him as being whiter than Justice Thomas.

Trust me - it was funnier when Stewart said it....
