Live Aid's 20th Anniversary

Live Aid's 20th Anniversary is coming up, so that deserves a thread.

This is how I'll be celebrating:

Tonight (technically, Friday morning) from Midnight to 2AM, I’m co-hosting Essential 80’s “Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Live Aid.” The show will be re-broadcast Saturday night from 10PM to Midnight—probably a little more palatable time for most folks, I’m sure. You can find this on 90.3FM. And, the show is totally commercial-free. (Of course, our Sports Talk show is heard Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9PM to 11PM on that same frequency.)

In keeping with the show’s format, our playlist will be only songs released in the 80’s that were performed at Live Aid on July 13th 1985. Of course, that day was just 2 days after my 15th birthday…..

If you’re in (or driving around in) the listening area--or know someone who lives in the area and would be interested--please let them know. The listening area mainly consists of Nassau, Western Suffolk and Eastern Queens, but the signal can be heard in a lot more of the Tri-State area depending on atmospheric conditions, conflicting frequencies and the quality of the radio.

Thanks, and please tell a friend.

Oooh! ah!

Well, a-here we are, a-here we are, a-here we go
Four in the mornin’, justa hittin’ the road
Here we go-oh!
Rockin’ all over the world! yeah!

Well, a-giddy-up, a-giddy-up, a-get away
We’re goin’ crazy, and we’re goin’ today
Here we go-oh!
Rockin’ all over the world!

Well I like it, I like it, I like it, I like it
I la-la-la-like it
La-la-la-like it
Here we go-oh!
Rockin’ all over the world!

Yeah! yeah!

Well, I’m gonna tell your mama what your daddy do
So come out of the night with your dancin’ shoes
Here we go-oh!
Rockin’ all over the world! yeah!

Well I like it, I like it, I like it, I like it
I la-la-la-like it
La-la-la-like it
Here we go-oh!
Rockin’ all over the world!

Well I like it, I like it, I like it, I like it
I la-la-la-like it
La-la-la-like it
Here we go-oh!
Rockin’ all over the world!

And, to think people were saying "Who are The Hooters?" In Philly, no less!

They followed Joan Baez on stage with "And We Danced" and "All You Zombies." They were also introduced by Chevy Chase and Joe Piscopo together. Insert joke here.

Edgy:

I sooo wanted to play that song tonight, but it wasn't released in the 80's. So, I passed it along to the guy who does the little Free For All/Mixed Bag rock show on the station.

I could have cared less about Live Aid even tho I was squarely their demographic target -- 19 years old & white!

I remember thinking the whole thing was artificial and that these artists only came together to perform because it was fashionable. I was too cool for Live Aid!

I did have a Live Aid t-shirt that I stole from a chick. Wore it for years before someone stole it from me.

Wow, a twice-stolen shirt.

Not a lot of Live Aid Music was released in the eighties, considering that most leading touring acts were veterans at the time -- Dylan and Elton John and Bowie and such.

Also lot of reunions of bands who hadn't been together in the eighties (Zeppelin, Sabbath with Ozzie) and comebacks by peeps who hadn't played much live since the eighties had begun (McCartney and such).

Neil Young was considered washed up at the time of Live Aid!

So I guess you played a lot of Billy Ocean.

I think I was there.

Philly, 1985 right?

Was it at the old football stadium and did Tracy Chapman perform?

It was definitely in Philly - the local broadcasts down here made a lot out of that fact last week.

I'm remembering The Police and Bruce Springsteen too.

Yes?

Chapman hadn't broken yet.

Bruce was on his honeymoon and sat it out.

Sting dissed the Police and elected to perform with Phil Collins instead. Today marks exactly two decades of Sting being totally lame.

Soupcan, you're probably thinking of those Amnesty International concerts. Tracy Chapman was definitely at those.

Youse '80s music guys would get a kick out of the regularly scheduled 'Essential '80s' program (at least from the bit I've heard of it).
I caught 'Safety Dance' there a few weeks back and wished I had a copy of [u:c48779aa12]Sturdivant if you Want to[/u:c48779aa12] with me at the time so I could follow along. It's preceded by a Springsteen show which is also good.

I'm the king of rock, there is none higher
Sucker MC's should call me sire
To burn my kingdom, you must use fire
I won't stop rockin' till I retire

Now we rock the party and come correct
Our cuts are on time and rhymes connect
Got the right to vote and will elect
And other rappers can't stand us, but give us respect

They called us and said we're gettin iller
There's no one chiller
It's not Michael Jackson and this is not Thriller
As one def rapper, I know I can hang
I'm Run from Run-DMC, like Kool from Kool and the Gang

Roll to the rock, rock to the roll
DMC stands for devestating mic control
You can't touch me with a ten foot pole
And I even made the devil sell me his soul

Now we crash through walls, cut through floors
Bust through ceilings and knock down doors
And when we're on the tape, we're fresh out the box
You can hear our sound for blocks and blocks

For every living person we're a purple treat
It's me and DMC, Jay where's the beat?

Now we're the baddest of the bad, the coolest of the cool
I'm DMC, I rock and roll. I'm DJ Run, I rock and rule
It's not a Trick or Treat and it's not a April Fool
It's all brand new, never ever old school

Springsteen didn't play Live Aid, but his stage did--it was used for the Wembley show.

I refuse to play Billy Ocean tonight, but I will post the playlist tomorrow. I'll start with "I Don't Like Mondays" and follow with "And We Danced."

Run DMC actually played before Philly even started, as part of a sound check. It's an "extra" on the DVD.

I swear I remember watching RUN-DMC perform live during Live Aid in Philly. Unless MTV was showing a tape of the soundcheck in the middle of the day.

Edgy DC

They played "King of Rock."

They were rather irrelevant at the time, from MTV's point of view, and after a minute of DMC (they mic-checked into the song, as rappers are wont to do) Nina cut to Wembley where some ballad was being warbled.

It was mentioned during the terrible TV coverage of Live 8 that DMC were the only Rap Group to play Live Aid, how htings have changed.
